PS3/HDTV connection to Home Theater System (5.1 surround issue)

Hello. Many thanks in advance for helping me out. I’ve spent hours trying to solve my problem without any luck. Here’s the problem: I have a Sony HDX576WF Home Theater System connected to my LG HD TV via HDMI. It works just fine, 5.1 surround sound is perfect. Now I am trying to get my PS3 connected so that I can have my Blu-ray discs and games in 5.1 as well, and that’s where I hit a snag. I only get audio on the front right and left speakers, nothing from the back speakers. There is no HDMI input in the Home Theater System. These are the inputs and outputs it has:
•Inputs and Outputs
oHDMI™ Connection Output(s) : 1
oHeadphone Input(s) : 1 (Rear) 3.5mm
oOptical Audio Input(s) : 1 (Rear)
oAnalog Audio Input(s) : 2 (Rear)
oCoaxial Audio Digital Input(s) : 1 (Rear)
oComponent Video (Y/Pb/Pr ) Input(s) : 1 (Rear)
oComposite Video Input(s) : 1 (Rear)
oDigital Media Port (Input) : Yes

So far, I have an HDMI cable running from my PS3 to my TV, an HDMI cable connecting my Home Theater System to the TV, and an additional optical audio cable running from my TV to my Home Theater System (which is useless so far, I was hoping that because my Home Theater System had a TV Digital In optical jack, it would make up for the lack of HDMI inputs, but it doesn’t seem to be the case). I also tried connecting the optical audio cable straight from my PS3 into my Home Theater System without success. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do? Many thanks!!!

Re: PS3/HDTV connection to Home Theater System (5.1 surround issue)

Connect a digital cable from the PS3 to the receiver for sound from the PS3. The digital audio out on the TV is only intended for audio from the TVs internal tuner. With other sources, it mixes it down to 2 channel, which is exactly what is happening. I don't know why that didn't work. There may be some configuration or input selection issue, but that is the correct way to connect everything.

Re: PS3/HDTV connection to Home Theater System (5.1 surround issue)

You generally have to assign each digital audio input (optical and coax) to a particular video input. Unlike the multiple analog stereo inputs, they aren't automatically paired with one video input. (See the manual.) This is probably the source of your problem, since this is the correct connection. (The other possibility is that the digital audio outupt you're using on the PS3 isn't enabled. Don't know anything about PS3s, so again, you'll need to check the manual to see if that's a possibility.)
