Re: HTF BLU-RAY REVIEW: The Dark Knight (Recommended)

I pre-order most of my Blu-Rays from Amazon, but I wanted this one on release day so I'm going to Best Buy first thing tomorrow to pick it up. Can't wait to watch TDK on my system!!!

Anyway, I 'smell' another super-duper edition within a year.
Yeah, this seems pretty transparent to me- from the lightweight extras to the unattractive cover art, to the ability to easily improve on the PQ thru the use of an unfiltered 35mm version, this looks like what it probably is- a quick Q4 cash-in for Christmas. Even given all the negatives I was seeing/hearing with this release, up until a few days ago I fully expected to be running out today to get a copy. Then I realized...why? I already knew the main feature would be an unsatisfying presentation for my particular set-up and the on top of that there are no compelling extras that I need to see. So luckily my Netflix account rolled over last night and I was able to change my plan from 3 at a time to 4 at a time. TDK in en route and I'll likely keep it out the full month and after watching it two or three times probably I won't feel a big urge to see it again for a while.
And by that time...

Re: HTF BLU-RAY REVIEW: The Dark Knight (Recommended)

I had ordered my copy from blockbuster video. I got there early. They were playing dark knight on both the 3 screen and the ps3 screen. the 3 screen was very dark and not the right widescreen format.. a problem with the bluray player. the ps3 screen was in the right format and looked very nice. maybe some people that are having problems.. have a calibration problem or something?

I could be wrong, but I thought I heard/read somewhere that Christopher Nolan isn't big on extras, feeling that it gives away too much of the "magic". Certainly the releases for Memento, The Prestige and Batman Begins weren't too heavy on the substantive extras (like commentaries--I think he did one for the LE of Memento and that's it, 60+ minute featurettes, many deleted scenes, etc.). When compared with those releases I don't think Dark Knight weighs in with significantly less substantive extras.

You're right, apart from the big Memento SE (there was also a 3-disc in the UK) there hasn't been a loaded dvd from him. That isn't bad or anything, if he thinks it gives away the magic (like Steven Spielberg). After all, not every director is (or has to be) a big fan of extras, like Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro are.

Re: HTF BLU-RAY REVIEW: The Dark Knight (Recommended)

The main extra(s) that I want to see- and something that wouldn't be at all in conflict with Nolans apparent feelings- is a comprehensive overview/conceptual exploration behind the elements of the viral campaign. To me this is a monumental no-brainer. This material already exists and it supports and embellishes the narrative of the film (like the included newscasts do) rather than pulling the curtain back and revealing the wizard. I would be very interested to see this all this material collected and annotated, along with whatever ideas/graphics didn't make the cut. There's no guarantee we'll get this kind of stuff, but I'll still hold out for a straight 2.40:1 alternative presentation anyway...or barring any of that, a huge discount on this edition which will come eventually.

I know that some people complain about the changing from widescreen to full screen.. once you get involved into the movie.. you really don't notice it that much.

Thanks.

I'm not too surprised. But that seems a little high...especially since BB has got it out there for $23.99.

Don't know if you've got a BB near you, but W-M should price match a BB price as long as you can show them the flyer.

Best Buy was a bit far away.

Walmart was just convenient for me last night.

I didnt know they price matched though - thanks for that info.

I never really go there - I prefer Kohls.

For those that might not know, I saw Target has a 3-disc set for $29.99 and it comes with a Batman Mask type disc holder, just like the Iron Man set.

I don't see it on their website but I did see it in the store this morning.

I always assume people know this....

But for anyone who doesn't, you can always check out the Weekly RoundUp over in Bargains & Deals to find out the best prices/exclusives on various new releases.

Obviously, we are "Dark Knight"-centric in this week's report. Hope it can be of a help to someone. If you want to see the Mask packaging at Target mentioned by Ron...it's in there.

Just got back from Best Buy and it was an absolute madhouse(man, I hate going there during the holidays). I swear every single person in line had a copy of TDK on DVD or Blu-Ray. I can't imagine what the sales numbers are going to be for this title.

It wouldn't happen to be the "Jokerized" trailer would it? The new BluRay sitting on my desk has sparked conversation all day here at work. The trailer was brought up earlier and I suggested it'd be a good easter egg.

Ha, that is all funny. This is FAR from reference and the EE is IMO not "minor".
After all of the discussion of the "non-minor" edge enhancement, I must be missing something because other than a few questionable instances, I am just not seeing it either on my BD (feeding my 720p projector) or in the online screen shots alleged to make it obvious. Oh well, all the more enjoyment for me in my obliviousness. I wish I could have not seen all the deficiencies in the SD DVD, though.

Re: HTF BLU-RAY REVIEW: The Dark Knight (Recommended)

I just got done watching it and honestly, if I hadn't read that stupid thread over at AVS I wouldn't have noticed a single damn thing wrong with the Blu-Ray. Thank goodness I'm not wired up like some of the people over there who seemingly live just to look for things like EE and DNR. The IMAX sequences were absolutely STUNNING and on top of that the TrueHD track makes this one of the best sounding discs in my collection. The truck/police van/batpod chase is now THE demo scene for my HT.

Re: HTF BLU-RAY REVIEW: The Dark Knight (Recommended)

It's interesting how the EE only seems to pop up occasionally, I'd say it was very apparent when Joker confronts the mob early on, in fact it seems to pop up whenever the Chinese guy is around.

"Because he's the hero that Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now... and so we'll hunt him... because he can take it... because he's not a hero... he's a silent guardian, a watchful protector... a DARK KNIGHT."

Re: HTF BLU-RAY REVIEW: The Dark Knight (Recommended)

Got it in from NF today and just got done seeing it for my third time and this BD absolutely rips the roof off the joint in terms of visual and aural beauty!

Too bad they only sent disc one because I can't watch the extras. However this might be a good thing since it'll give me something to look foreward to when I get it for xmas, other than the film itself of course.

It's gonna be a "SERIOUS" xmas!

BTW, the switching ratios didn't bother me in the least.

Just finished this and it looks gorgeous. Changing aspect ratio did not once pull me out of the movie. To caught up in the movie to really notice or care.
