Denon 2809ci HDMI switching

Does the Denon 2809ci receiver HDMI inputs work without the receiver being powered on?

In other words, do I need the receiver to be switched "on" to allow the television to get the picture and audio signal without using the receiver's speakers (just the televisions speakers only)?

So essentially I would be using the receiver as a switcher. I'm assuming that it will not work without the power "on".

My dish is HD, with an HDMI output, and my television has two inputs. Do I need to split the dish signal, one to the tv and one to the receiver? I'm trying to eliminate cables as well as make it as simple as possible. Also I don't always need to listen to the dish in surround.

What are others doing to hook up their dish?

Re: Denon 2809ci HDMI switching

Good question. I am wondering the same. Looking at a new reciever and would like to utlilize the upscaling. I would not always want to have the reciever on just to watch the 6pm news.

Re: Denon 2809ci HDMI switching

Hmm... I have a 2808 with a dish dvr with hdmi out and I just hooked it all up last night. I don't think it makes sense to go straight from the dish to the tv...although I will be trying this as a troubleshooting technique later today. I have hdmi out from the dish into the hdp input on the denon and then out to the tv and the HD picture on the tv just doesnt look as good as I think it can. I want to make sure the upscaling setting or whatever is inside the denon is set right.

I don't think ANY receivers work without being on. You have to turn it on to select a source. If you just want an HDMI switch, save yourself $900+ and just buy an HDMI switch.
