Speaker Placement

I'm sure this is one of the easier questions to answer nevertheless here it goes. I just finished building a home theatre with a 7.1 sound system. Everything works but I was wondering what speakers are not active when a movie is played in 5.1 Is it the ones behind the sitting area or the ones beside the sitting area?

The side surrounds are for 5.1. Rear surrounds are for 7.1. Most receivers have options to matrix the sound to the rears even for 5.1 material.
