Re: Outlaw Audio Model 997
The 997 is supposed to contain the Trinnov Sound Processing circuitry which does some things that the others don't do. Specifically, it can physically move the sound field around so that sound can appear to come from a virtual location rather than an actual location. Example: You can't put your center speaker directly in front of your screen but the Trinnov processing can actually do this (I've heard it in action on the Sherwood Newcastle AVR version of the 997 at CEDIA.) Whether this is important enough for you is an individual decision depending on your own situation. Otherwise things like Audyssey also handle room equalization and volume dynamically so that makes units like the Denon receivers, etc. other alternatives. Of course, these units are receivers, not pre/pros so you might be paying for amps you don't need. The only real other question mark at this point is that the Denon receivers (et. al.) are "here" and the Outlaw 997 is "coming soon." It's tough to base a final decision on specifications rather than on first hand experience.
Stay tuned (literally)....

The 997 can't be released until the Sherwood Newcastle clone (which the 997 is based on) has been in the market for 60 days. It hasn't been released yet either so it looks like it's going to be a while before the 997 is.

Outlaw announced today that they will probably not meet the "60 days after the Sherwood AVR Debut" that was initially suggested with the pre/pro "version" called the 997. As a stopgap measure Outlaw is offering the Onkyo 886 and has a much nicer manual for that model up on the Outlaw Saloon - one that was commissioned by Outlaw and offered to all 886 owners. People over there are buzzing with speculation regarding the whys and wherefores.
