anyone gone back to school?

Anyone's welcome to chime in but I'm curious to hear what it's like for people with families and jobs and mortgages and all the other stuff that comes with being a grownup. How difficult is / was it to go back while juggling all that other stuff? Has anyone gone back to get a degree online? Was going back to school worth the hassle?

My "chosen" career is not turning out to be the magic carpet ride I thought it would be so am now trying to figure out what to do.

Any general thoughts would be appreciated.

Re: anyone gone back to school?

I went back full-time to law school at the age of 40, but I'm not sure how much advice I can transfer. I worked as a EE in defense work up until the USSR broke up, leaving us with an uncertain future. So I re-fi'ed my house, cashed in some 401(k) funds, and went full-time for 3 years. Since I was single my experience was having a fun sabbatical. Most other people had a different experience. To this day I can't see how people survive working part-time and stretching law school out to 4 years.

Some how it's easier to have the discipline to study hard after working at a career job for many years.

Re: anyone gone back to school?

I would also love to hear feedback on this. I am really tired of my career but feel trapped in it. I thought about re-specializing, but cant imagine how I could go back to school full-time.

Re: anyone gone back to school?

I'm in my second year of a two-year IT program. More specifically, computer programming. I'm the oldest in my class at 29, and I'm the only one with a child.

I have a full time class schedule, and life gets a bit hard sometimes because of it. (Never mind the fact that I took a job as a part time Programming tutor for first year students/library clerk.)

But, I find it one of the most rewarding things ever, to be able to juggle a home, family, job, classes and homework.

Re: anyone gone back to school?

My wife had 2 years of college when we got married in 1990. She stopped school when we started with the children. She did take just one class every year to keep her credits though. When my youngest got into first grade, my wife got a job with Ameri-corps working at the school as a reading coach. The rules allowed her to work there only 2 years, but when finished she had $7,000.00 in grants that she used to get her Registered Nurse degree. While she went back to school full time those next two years, I had to take over much of the housework. If she wasn't taking class, she had much studying to do. It has worked out well. She is now earning a good income and we did not incur any debt to pay for it. If things go bad for me with the way the economy is going, we have her income to get by on.

Re: anyone gone back to school?

^^ That's great that you were there to help her.

I didn't mention that I'm single, so my housework has to suffer somewhat during the week.
