Upcoming holiday PC deals?

My father is looking to buy a new desktop for my mother for Christmas. He's set me with the task of making it happen. I'm looking to go with a big retailer (Dell, hp, etc.) rather than custom build, because that's what they want. There are some attractive options online now that would serve her needs in the $400-700 (depending on whether Dad opts for a new monitor) range. In my experience previously, most of the big deals come in January and February AFTER the holiday rush, but obviously that's not the time table I'm dealing with here.

So with all of that said, should I jump now or would I be better off waiting until later in the month? Will prices come down significantly after Black Friday?

I'd wait till Monday for Nehalem to launch, should be some closeouts after that!

Sam:

So where is Nehalem supposed to start up with? Servers, etc. or the PC market? Is it supposed to be launched with the new Apple PowerBook next year or sooner?

Adam:

Watch the GotApex? listing on the portal page to the forum or the Deals Page. They have listed great deals for both HP and Dell and give you discount codes to use too that are usually good for just couple of days. I have seem some PCs from Dell that have a monitor included in the $599 range over the past week.

Here is one they have up now.

Dell Small Business - Vostro 220 Mini Tower with 2.66GHz Core 2 Duo, 2GB of Memory, 250GB Hard Drive, DVD+-RW and 20.1" LCD Monitor for Only $499 with FREE Shipping

If you missed last week's deal, this one's even better (in my humble opinion)! For only $100 more than last week's, you get a better and bigger monitor and a much better 2.66GHz Core 2 Duo processor in a Vostro 220. It's essentially the same system as the 200, it's just in a different case and to kick off their launch, I think they've dropped the price for a little while (possibly for this week only) and have included a nice bump in the processor and the bigger monitor! There is no expiration date so this may only last a few days or may go the full week like these deals are supposed to. The Vostro 410 this week come with a 22" LCD monitor, QUAD Processor and everything else you could possibly need for heavy computing for just $749.

Re: Upcoming holiday PC deals?

Thanks for the info, Parker and Sam. I ended up ordering a 19" monitor seperately from Newegg.com yesterday, so now I'm looking for an option without a monitor bundled in. I'll definitely keep an eye on the deals page and wait for that site Sam mentioned to launch.

Re: Upcoming holiday PC deals?

After buying the 19" widescreen Acer monitor on the 12th, I found a $115 discount for the Inspiron 518 desktop which I'd settled on over the last week. This brought me to $499 with an Intel Core 2 Quad processor Q6600 (8MB L2, 2.4GHz, 1066FSB), 4GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 800MHz (4 DIMM), 500GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) and 16X DVD+/-RW Drive.

It might not be the best deal I could get, but it was the best I'd found yet in his price range (<$500 for the machine itself) and I wanted to leave buffer time to make sure it'd get here before Christmas.
