There's a long and semi-detailed message on the IMDb message board from someone who claims to be fairly knowledgeable about the film, particularly in its TV and home video incarnations.

Basically his conclusion is that after viewing the new 109 minute DVD and comparing it to his old VHS tapes, side by side, he comes away with the impression that the 109 minute version *IS* the official theatrical running time.

Is it not possible that in 1980, the movie premiered at 121 minutes and after initial critical failure, was trimmed by 12 minutes to its "normal" 109 minutes in an attempt to improve it?

Then the pan'n'scan TV and home video versions came and they re-edited it with bloated extra footage to get it up to the 143 minute version.

I've got the DVD - haven't watched it yet - and I haven't seen it in years - and that was probably a TV version of it, so I'm not a scholar on this film. But with stories I've heard of OTHER films getting this treatment, it all seems logical to me.

I think I'm content with the 109-minute figure being correct for the main theatrical version that played back in 1980.

A fugitive moves on, through anguished tunnels of time, down dim streets, into dark corners. And each new day offers fear and frustration, tastes of honey and hemlock. But if there is a hazard, there is also hope. - Closing narration to THE FUGITIVE, "Death Is The Door Prize".

I believe this explanation is probably correct. I saw it at the theaters when it premiered and then had the extended cut on VHS and trimming after intial failure has happened to a few movies before. Warners may not even have an original release theatrical version around anymore or maybe they were confused by 3 different prints. With no extras and a $19.95 list it would have been nice to have included both this cut and the extended cut. The version here does move at a quicker pace which is probably a good thing.

Re: WHV Press Release: More Paul Newman Films on DVD

When it was reviewed/panned by the New York Times & Chicago Tribune it had a running time of 121 minutes listed. Opened March 28, 1980 and individual theatre ads had the movie showing every 2 hrs & 15 min. By April 8th (2nd week) there were theatre ads listing it as showing every 2 hrs. It also appeared to hit the budget theatres pretty quickly.(Info via ProQuest Historical Newspapers-check your local library to see if they offer it through their website. Hours of fun)

Thanks for all the replies regarding the running time. The reasons behind the alternate running times does make sense. I haven't seen the movie in ages but I'd imagine the lower running time will be a good thing. I believe what I watched years ago was the extended version.

If this thing were one minute longer than 109 minutes I think my hair would have gone gray. What a stinker. Nice transfer, though.
