David Tennant quits as Doctor Who

Bah! So much for my secret hopes of David beating Tom's record.

Re: Tennant to leave TARDIS in 2010

He's given an incredible boost to the show and helped make it what it is today. I'll definitely miss the mannerisms he's created in the character. But alas, he's right. It's time to move on to other projects and let someone else take the helm of the TARDIS. But man will it be difficult to fill his shoes!

Then again, I said the same thing when Christopher Eccleston left the show.

Re: Tennant to leave TARDIS in 2010

Well we still have the Christmas special this year along with the shorty from the Children in Need special.

Then there will be four specials in 2009, which I'm sure he will do another Children in Need shorty in 2009.

So we should have a pretty good fourth special episode with his regeneration.

It's going to be hard to see him go and to see someone else replace him.
I've loved Tennant as Doctor Who.

Makes you wonder how

Re: Tennant to leave TARDIS in 2010

And here i thought they held off on the next series/season just so he WOULD come back to the part full time in 2010.
He is a great Dr. and i will miss him, but Tom Baker still has the number 1 spot in my mind.

Re: Tennant to leave TARDIS in 2010

This is interesting given that I've read before that he became an actor specifically to play the Doctor.

I was sorry to see Eccleston go, and I'll be sorry to see Tennant go. I've really enjoyed the past 4 seasons (series).

Re: Tennant to leave TARDIS in 2010

There's an article on the Beeb about possible successors:
BBC NEWS | Entertainment | Doctor Who: The runners and the riders

Paterson Joseph would be a decent, quirky choice. I remember him from Neverwhere, playing a character very much like the Doctor.

David Morrissey plays

another Doctor

in the forthcoming Xmas special. As such I think he's the most likely, no matter what the bookmakers say.

I would dearly love Sean Pertwee to be the new Who. He's an excellent actor, with gravitas, and I can't see him mugging to camera like Tennant does a lot.

God help us if any of the other three are chosen.

Re: Tennant to leave TARDIS in 2010

"Doctor Who" has just lost a viewer.

I had a very hard time seeing my childhood favorite Peter Davison decide it was his time to move on and regenerate in the '80s, now after three series (again!) David Tennant feels it is time to move on? It probably also comes from the bad memory of who replaced him (hated Colin Baker). What a missed opportunity that he won't be involved in Steven Moffat's first year.

I hope the five specials will get a separate release.

Disney/Buena Vista/Miramax: Please put Beautiful Girls on Blu-ray with bonus features and the original theatrical trailer in 1080p, and an anamorphic re-release with bonus features and the original theatrical trailer day-and-date on DVD. Thanks!

Considering Doctor Who is known for having a revolving door with the actor who plays him, this seems like a missed opportunity that you won't continue to watch.

I think David wanted more money and I can't believe the BBC wasn't able to give him what he wanted.

Re: Tennant to leave TARDIS in 2010

Is there one more season with Tennant as the Doctor that we in the US, (who only watch on Sci-Fi), have not seen? I know this runs in the UK usually quite some time before us Yanks get to see it.

Does this mean River Song and him meet after the regeneration? She did recognize him after all though, so...hmm.

Actually we were just a few weeks behind them with the last season. So, no Tennant doesnt have a full season that we have not seen. All he has is the 4 or 5 specials that will air until 2010 when the next full season (13 episodes) will be made. The next episode (special) will be the Christmas one, on the BBC.

I dont know how those 5 episodes will arrive to us in the US, will the BBC hold on to them until 2010 with season 5, or will we have specials too? Dunno.

I can't tell you the amount of times I've watched and then stopping watching the original "Doctor Who" on PBS.

I honestly hope that wasn't the real reason for his departure. Pay the man, BBC.

Re: Tennant to leave TARDIS in 2010

From what I've heard, David Tennant will be leaving tv to work in theatre, which he's currently starring as Hamlet.

As much as I hate to see him go, the whole point of the Doctor Who is to keep it evolving.

I just wished the show had more than 13 episodes per series.

I never saw the original shows, but am now completely hooked.

I'm not nice...people just make that assumption of me.

I read that David will be on the BBC Breakfast on Monday. If anyone from the UK happens to catch it, I would love to know what he has to say.

Honestly, I feel his departure is "too early" but maybe that's me.

It has been years since I've seen the original. The stories were serialized in (I think) 4 or 5 half-hour episodes.

Maybe more of her story will be in one of the specials? Or perhaps they'll just tell it in a book or audio.

Just so he doesnt keep that emo look.
I have to say i am excited that Moffit is taking over, as I really like his writing much more than Davies.

Re: Tennant to leave TARDIS in 2010

On the face of it, I'm not entirely sold on the Eleventh Doctor. On the Confidential Episode last evening, I wasn't really feeling him in the interview sessions. It wasn't until they had clips from his other work (including Ruby in the Smoke with Billie Piper) that had a vague "Doctorish" vibe to most of them that I began to come around to him being able to pull the role off.

I love Doctor Who enough that they could probably put a Poodle in the role and I would still want to see where the TARDIS will land next week. I would, however, probably still lament the good old days of Tennant and Troughton. I love the other Doctors, but those two are solidly my favorites.

With the Moff at the reigns, how can the fifth series be bad?

2010 and the Specials cannot come soon enough.

The Torchwood mini-series will also be a welcome addition from BBC Wales in this "Year Without a Doctor."

I'm curious as to why the Doctor character is frequently recast. It is intriguing.

Re: Tennant to leave TARDIS in 2010

I don't think I am going to be too thrilled with this next Doctor, he is WAY too young. If anything I thought they would go with an OLDER actor and make it more like the Baker or Pertwee years. I will give him a chance, but this is NOT at all an actor with any interest at all to me. The Doctor should carry some weight to his appearance and getting younger is NOT what they should do.

You must not be a long time Who fan. This is the tradition and always has been as part of the story. He is a Time Lord, NOT human, which means when badly injured he can regenerate his body without dying. If anything, they need to keep it changing and consistent with the facts and that is part of it.

I've known about the Doctor since the B&W episodes back in the 60s - but am not an ardent viewer. Also know about the regeneration device - though wasn't there a limit of how many times he could do it?

It just seems with this latest run the actors are not around for more than 1 or 2 seasons. Seems rather odd - unless its a way of BBC keeping the salary costs down.

Can't comment on the new Doctor, as I don't know anything about him. However, we watched "The Next Doctor" last night and enjoyed it very much. Good mix of action, drama and silliness. That steampunk robot clomping through London was terrific!

If you saw "The Next Doctor" than you probably have access to the "Confidential"s. The one titled "The Eleventh Doctor" introduces the new Doctor and explains a bit about how the re-invention of the Doctor every few years keeps the series fresh, along with a mini-history of previous Doctors.

My first impression is that Matt Smith can make a good Doctor. (as long as I don't have to view zoom modes of his lips, his other performance clips were OK)

Re: Tennant to leave TARDIS in 2010

I gather that, in part, it's been something forced upon the BBC - Christopher Eccleston very specifically signed on for just one year, not wanting to be tied to any single project for very long. I've read rumors that Tennant wanted a big raise and a long-term contract if he was going to continue on, which isn't a commitment the BBC was willing to make. I also think it makes a certain amount of sense that a new showrunner should get a clean slate - this means Steven Moffat won't have to write Russel Davies's character, but will instead be able to start from scratch.
Jay's Movie Blog - A movie-viewing diary.
Transplanted Life: Sci-fi soap opera about a man placed in a new body, updated two or three times a week.
Trading Post Inn - Another gender-bending soap, with different collaborators writing different points of view.
