Without the more developed earlier scene where she visits Salieri in hope of influencing Mozart's selection for a teaching appointment...and the end result of that meeting...it's not possible to completely appreciate and understand her later reaction to him.

I'm definitely a fan of the director's cut.

Of course, that's the difference between plot and characterization. I meant to say that the added scenes don't add much in terms of the story. As characterization they do add a lot to the film (except the scene with Katerina, Mozart and Salieri after the opera, which reveals the first two had an affair. That one was redundant, I think). I actually can't choose between the two, they're both valid versions. That's why I wanted them both on Blu-Ray in the first place .

Good points, all.

I suppose that this release will be received with a range of enthusiasm and resentment. Place me firmly among the enthusiastic.

IMO that scene nearly ruins the film by seriously degrading both characters (although I won't complain about Constanze's, um, wardrobe modification ).
