Donna Reed Show -- review??

Re: Donna Reed Show -- review??

I have the set. I watched some of the shows using a blu-ray player on a 50 inch TV.
I don't think it looks bad at all. It is certainly less blurry then watching Standard
Def station like TVLand on a 50 inch screen. Scratches and dirt are there but they are most visible during the closing credits rather than the show itself. The shows I have watch appear uncut. The only thing I noticed missing was the Screen Gems logo. No Sony logo ether. The theme music cuts off just before where the Screen Gems logo would appear. Since the theme played over the logo the music just stops before the end of the song. Since for whatever reason they can't show the Screen Gems logo I wish the had blacked out the screen to complete the music instead of just cutting it off. On the other hand it is only a couple of seconds and compared to My Three Sons and Season One of Father Knows Best, this is much better.

Does anyone know the history of the ownership of this show. The copywrite on the prints say Todon ( Donna Reed's company) and another company instead of Screen Gems or Columbia. Does anyone know if the show was sold to Columbia Pictures after it ended?

Thanks to all who responded.

Background music appears to be original, then? To me that would be the best news of all.

Point blank, if you like shows like Leave it to beaver, you will most likely enjoy Donna Reed.In my opinion, both are very similar, as far as old family sitcoms go.

Re: Donna Reed Show -- review??

Watching old shows like Donna Reed is like traveling to another time, another planet, another dimension -- which, for me, is exactly where I want to be.

I didn't care much for this show when it was new, but it sure is good now.

It falls in line with all the great sitcoms of that era. If you like "Father Knows Best", Leave It To Beaver" and the rest, you will like Donna Reed.

Just a "heads up" to those of you interested in buying this. You can get it at a great price (at least I did) during the 25% off DD sale that is going on now. IIRC it was $16.59 shipped. I can't wait to see this program again!

Re: Donna Reed Show -- review??

I got mine in the mail today , and im happy with the picture quality !!! The compression issues noted in the dvd reviews are true, but they only show up for a minute or so in each episodes.Ive only watched the first 2 episodes, so I cant comment if that happens in all of them.I would say the picture quality here, is much better than the leave it to beaver sets.To be exact , this Donna Reed set has alot less grain in the picture than beaver. Its amazing that a small company like Arts Alliance can do a better set than Universal!!!!! Not to mention 10$ cheaper than the beaver sets, and single sided disc to boot!!!!!!!

Re: Donna Reed Show -- review??

Just got this set and am enjoying it very much! My 12 year old daughter loves it!

I've read that the Donna Reed Estate owns the first 5 seasons while Sony owns the last 3. Does anyone know WHY the Estate doesn't own the whole series? Seems to me that IF Sony decides to put out the last 3 seasons, they would be syndicated versions since that was the case with the 2 episode disc that came in select cereal boxes.

Re: Donna Reed Show -- review??

There are audio problems on the Donna Reed Show.

They used that restoration system which makes the background dead quiet when there is no sound present. But when people speak or music is played, a loud hiss accompanies the audio. I find this to be very annoying.

The video is fine.

Re: Donna Reed Show -- review??

I haven't gotten too far into the set, but so far the picture is certainly acceptable on a 65" screen, and doesn't seem to suffer from DNR or edge enhancement. There is some dirt and scratching, especially at the heads of episodes, so I doubt AAA had much restoration budget beyond the hiss elimination. I'm overjoyed to have these episodes, and it could have been much, much worse.

Re: Donna Reed Show -- review??

I'm on disc four and I have no complaints at all. I forgot how much I enjoyed this show while growing up. IMO, it stands up much better than many other sitcoms from the era. I eagerly look forward to season two!

Re: Donna Reed Show -- review??

I only watch 2- 3 episodes per week to make it last till season 2 comes out. Of course it helps, that I have alot of other unwatched dvd sets as well to view.

That's exactly how this one's grabbing me! I can't believe how good this show is while watching the DVD's. This one's basically a blind-buy as I don't remember the early 60's episodes when Mom & Dad watched it in primetime. I didn't see this one at all over the years in syndication.

I'm on Disc 1 and watched "The Foundling" last weekend. WOW! Guest Paul Picerni (Untouchables) was great and what a story!

Elena, you're sure right about this show. I have that release date for S2 on my list

Maybe it's just me but I get a different "flavor" out of this show that's different from the other similar shows from the late 50's-early 60's as Gary said.

"Checkmate King Two Out"   Jeff Willis  "Combat! A Selmur Production"

I'm a 50's - mid-90's TV/DVD Collector. One DVD show since '96: Firefly

The Fugitive/See Hollywood & Die: [Miles] "What, you think I'm crazy?!" [Kimble] "Next question."

I feel the same way Jeff! "The Donna Reed Show" always had it's very own character!!! This is why I have always been so mesmerized by this particular series!!!! It is such a Great Treat for me to be able to view it again...
