Rescoring Classic TV Shows

I remember the first DVD I bought with a rescored soundtrack was a budget release of "Petticoat Junction." I wasn't aware of any disclaimer on the DVD case indicating music had been altered.
When I popped in that DVD expecting to hear the original opening theme, I was disheartened to hear it had been replaced with a real hokey tune. The same had been done for the closing theme.
I found it hard to enjoy this DVD because of this, even though the rest of the soundtrack was untouched.
The same thing happened with a budget DVD I bought of "The Andy Griffith Show." The CBS/Paramount release wasn't yet available. Both the opening and closing themes of this budget DVD were replaced with some god awful generic tune.
I can understand that these "budget companies" might not have the deep pockets that CBS/Paramount has to pay music royalties, so considering I paid little for these budget DVDs I wasn't too angry, just disappointed.
However, when I read that the same rescoring is now being done by the big guys, that's just insulting...I mean how dumb do these companies think we are ??
I refuse to pay even a paltry $20.00 for a rescored DVD. I liken the rescoring a Classic TV show with putting a Yugo engine in a Corvette...car looks nice but sounds awful.
If these companies want to undermine sales of future classic shows, then they should just keep rescoring soundtracks. The babyboomers they are targeting, just won't buy this altered crap. Many classic show soundtracks are embedded in our minds and are an integral part of a TV show. They defined a particular scene.
LEAVE THE SOUNDTRACKS ALONE !!!
Okay...I'm stepping off my soapbox.

The first one I got was The Beverly Hillbillies and couldn't believe it. But I paid a buck or something for it and figured I got what I paid for.

What CBS/Paramount is doing is quite different, in my opinion. They place a standard disclaimer on a box whether alterations have been made or not, so there's no way to know what you're getting anymore.

Me? I have solved the problem by getting nothing (from them).

Re: Rescoring Classic TV Shows

With some PD shows, the music is changed. I also bought a PD Beverly Hillbillies disc with changed music: no "Ballad of Jed Clampett", just generic hillbilly music. When MPI put out its set of the Henning shows a few years back, it was with the permission of the Paul Henning family/estate. Odds are the official Paramount releases will be intact.
Bring "The continuing story of PEYTON PLACE" home on DVD: the one that started it all- from Dallas and Dynasty to Desperate Housewives and Gossip Girl!!! Starting this May, see the legendary saga starring Mia Farrow, Ryan O'Neal, Barbara Parkins, and Oscar-winner Dorothy Malone on DVD thru Shout!...

Re: Rescoring Classic TV Shows

Who cares if the original music has been rescored? While I would love the idea if studios could keep the original music, it's not a really big sticking point for me.

The reasons are obvious. If the choices from a studio were:

a; release a series/season with rescored or replaced music or
b; not release the series at all because of high licensing costs

I would rather have it released rather not having it all because the likelihood of a show retaining its orighinal music and maintaining an affordable cost for that show for consumers, I would rather have a copy to own so that I could watch the show.

It really isn't a difficult choice. There are many shows that I enjoy to which I own: Happy Days, Mork and Mindy, NCIS, Jag, Las Vegas and others I can't think of right now. I'm just glad to be able to watch some of my favoruite shows otherwise we may not have some of these classics on DVD.

A lot of us care, just in case you haven't noticed.

Re: Rescoring Classic TV Shows

What I'm wondering is how The Adventures of Robin Hood, a public domain show, has the original theme song & score intact in the first season released by Mill Creek. My understanding has always been that even if the episode itself is public domain, the music is still copyrighted. Hence the theme song & music replacements for the PD releases of the Beverly Hillbillies, etc. Maybe the laws are different in the Robin Hood case as this was produced overseas but I'm not sure.

Re: Rescoring Classic TV Shows

So, John D, you would rather NOT have a series on DVD if the original music cannot be included on the DVD release? If that's the case, then the TV Shows on DVD section in many stores would be limited to just a handful of titles because most television shows have some form of editing down to them. Cut scenes, edited scenes, replaced music, rescored music.

That's a pretty limiting statement ... I mean, this would mean that such shows as Jag and NCIS would never have been released. It's a good thing that you don't control which television shows get released.

Especially dollar discs. I wouldn't expect too much from those, lol.

The shows that people are talking about most likely could have used the original music but the studio just didn't bother figuring out who owned what. Though they haven't been mentioned by name, people are referring to The Fugitive and My Three Sons where the score (not a popular song) has been removed and replaced with a new recorded score. No one is talking about a show where they cut Stairway To Heaven because Led Zepplin wants $5,000,000 to use it.

In the case of The Fugitive (and most likely My Three Sons), Paramount wasn't sure who owned the score so instead of figuring it out, they just took out all the music (even what they knew they could use) and replaced it all with new music because it was easier than figuring it out and it avoided a lawsuit for using music they don't own or didn't pay to use. Obviously, every company needs to avoid a lawsuit but some research would have showed who owned what cue and they would have had no legal problems.

Exactly, Travis. And that's what makes this such a travesty. Many of us would have been upset and disappointed had we been told the backscores were removed because a particular Estate or individual wanted too much money. But at least we would have understood. Unfortunately what we have here is really nothing more than CBS/P being lazy and/or unwilling to go the extra mile, and then on top of that trying to kind of slide these substitutions in on us in a stealthy way. Not cool.
