Are We Moving To 16:9?

I remember a few writers talking about the eventual push to a 16:9 ratio from the current 16:10 in years past. My current 24 is 1920X1200, so the New Dell would be 1920X1080, just like a TV. I like the idea.

Dell S2409W 24-inch Widescreen Flat Panel Monitor

There's also a 23 and 22 of the same series in Canada now. The 24 at 350.00 looks good, so I'll assume the 23/22s are even better price wise. I think the 22 (http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/24/d...hd-resolution/) only has 2 connectors - DVI & VGA - the 24 has HDMI.

Thoughts?

Re: Are We Moving To 16:9?

So we just took another step backwards in total resolution?

I assume the same LCD panels will be used for monitors as for TVs, reducing cost, and driving the change.

I don't see a change in the resolution, only the shape.
Is this not a fix?

Re: Are We Moving To 16:9?

As you note, a 16:10 24" monitor is 1920x1200. The new 16:9 monitor is 1920x1080, an 11% decrease in total resolution.

Before this, the move from 4:3 to 16:10 also had an effective resolution drop. The easy example is 20" range. 4:3 are 1600x1200, and 16:10 are 1680x1050, an 8% decrease in resolution. (fixed )

Re: Are We Moving To 16:9?

So this means a Dell 27 at 1920X1200 is a gain in resolution over a 24 at 1920X1200? Size,DPI?

Or course the 96 dpi is just magnified on the 27.

I agree the 16:9 is smaller than 16:10

Assuming Dell ships an actual 24 diagonal

24", 16:9 LCD will be 20.92" x 11.77" = 246 sq. Inch.
24", 16:10 LCD will be 20.36" x 12.72" = 259 sq. Inch.

So a 16:9 LCD for the same size will be smaller by about 13 sq. Inches. as the 24" is the diagonal size. 5% diff

forgive me if I'm out in left field over pixels vs size
