Yes, I just received this in an Email. It said it was cancer, and that he was 83.

Breaking news at CNN: Paul Newman has passed away at age 83. "He died of cancer Friday at his home in Westport, Connecticut, said spokeswoman Marni Tomljanovic."

For some odd reason, I had a feeling about this for the last week or so. Maybe it was just coincidence due to the re-release of "Cool Hand Luke".

Newman was an iconic actor, an actor whose death I think will affect many people in a deeply personal way. At the time of his greatest period, I was too young to be among the millions who loved him. But watching his films in retrospect, I can easily see his charisma and power. "The Hustler", in particular, is in the top echelon of my favorite films.

As a person, from what I've read, one can hardly imagine what a wonderful man he was. In his charitable causes, fealty to his wife and family and basic humility. He seems to be one of those few stars who one really would have liked to know in everyday life.

My deepest sorrows and sympathies to his family, his friends, his fans and, really, to all of us.

His death has been expected, with recent news that he wanted to be transfered from the hospital to his home where he wanted to die, but it's still shocking to hear.

For months THE ENQUIRER was running stories on his demise and
I hoped that the story was...well....it's THE ENQUIRER after all.

This is such sad news as Newman was a true Hollywood icon.

Hollywood legend Paul Newman dead at 83

When I think of Newman, I remember seeing Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and the scene on the bike. For some reason, its one of those iconic images of my youth that always makes me happy. Loved the movie.
The Sting too, although admittedly, he had many others.

I also liked his food products. I remember buying the salad dressing when it first hit and really liking it, eventually moving on to others. What a great idea too...proceeds to charities.

A new life awaits you in the off-world colonies, the chance to begin again in a golden land of opportunity and adventure.


Let's Go . . . To the colonies !

Don't forget his racing career. He was very good at that as well. Nowdays, 83 is too young. RIP

I received my very first Blu-ray disc yesterday, the new DE of Cool Hand Luke.

I was saving the film for tonight, and in view of the very sad news today, it will be a viewing with added poignancy. I did watch the featurette through yesterday evening, which featured interviews with most everyone associated save the star, for obvious reasons. They all had nothing but very warm words for Paul Newman, how professional he was, how down to earth, how very kind and generous he could be, how he asked the screenwriter not to write the part 'for Paul Newman'. After it finished, I kind of fretted a little, wondered how he was, was he still smiling that Luke smile...

I'll raise a glass later to a great, great movie star - very sadly missed.

One of the last of the truly great Hollywood stars. He had that aura of being beyond reproach, similiar to stars from the 30s and 40s. He felt much more real than those earlier stars. He had a charisma that would carry even the most trite material. A sad day, and a great loss for Hollywood and for the movies.

Sad news indeed... He truly was one of the last great icons in Hollywood. I'll give one of my favorite Newman movies, Slap Shot, a spin tonight.

Paul Newman was not just an actor, not even the best actor, he was something unparalleled, unapprehensible.

He was the Roger Federer, the Michael Jordan of the screen. He was leaps away from the rest, he just played in another league.

He'll be sorely missed.

I once had the privilege of meeting the great, the iconic, the fabulous Mr Newman . . . in London in his suite at the Connaught Hotel. This would have been about 1982 and he had just directed and starred in a rather mawkish little movie called Harry and Son. Anyway, I had really come to see his wife, Joanne Woodward, who was to give an on-stage interview the next day at the National Film Theatre, where I worked. Miss Woodward was out shopping so Mr Newman had to entertain me. He pressed for a waiter. "I'll have a glass of Mersault," he told the waiter, "and my guest will have a case of Jack Daniel's." Wit was to be his forte that afternoon.

Everyone talks of the piercing blue eyes and they certainly stabbed me. He said he could not attend Joanne's NFT session because he had an appointment, though I guessed he reasoned, in a wholly selfless and generous way, that he might upstage her. I asked him about a few of his pictures, told him that my favourite of his was Hud, and then I asked him what his new film was about.
"Well, it's about this rich old movie star who wakes up one morning with a terrific hard-on. His butler comes into the room and says, 'I see you have an erection, sir. What are you going to do with it?' The movie star says, 'I'm going to put some trousers over it and take it to London.'"
