Re: Anyone see David Letterman last night? 9/24/08
I watched it. I had heard about it earlier in the day.
I haven't seen Dave that sharp and aggressive in a long time.
Reminded me of his days back at NBC.
Loved it!

I'd be angry too if someone cancelled a planned interview with me just to give one to someone else.

I thought it was entertaining but incredibly incisive. I never watched Letterman in his NBC days - and I admit I didn't get him back then - but it was quite a thing to behold. The big lesson: Don't make Dave mad.

Yes, Dave was pissed. He made some good points, joking or not. The attitude even spread to Craig Fergusons show afterwards. Craig made a very good point in his opening monolog. An interesting night of television.

Some things are more important than appearing on a talk show. Letterman has had guests cancel on him before. It is part of the job. He shouldnt get mad. It is unprofessional.
I actually watch the show almost every day. I record it and watch it the following day. This means I have not yet seen this episode yet. Sounds like I shouldn't bother.

I don't really see any political discussion of any kind, don't see why the thread would be locked. I'm pretty sure it's not against the rules to say "John McCain" either.
Dave seemed mildly upset at first, but when he found out that McCain was actually being interviewed by Couric at that exact moment... "Hey John, need a ride to the airport?" Priceless.

The previous nite was also a lot of fun.
A former head of state who is now married to a Senator (Zack can provide names for those of you too slow to figure this out) was the guest for most of the show.
The interview went quite well, but after that guest left the building Chris Rock came out and was as funny and sharp as Chris can be.
It was great.
BTW, new Chris Rock special on HBO this weekend.

i don't know if it backfired. if Letterman truly wanted to hurt him, he'll not let him on the show until after the election, and invite Obama instead (if that's allowed). as it is, there'll probably be a "part 2" where they make up on his show and both get great publicity.

Any time a guest is unprofessional, it gets up Dave's ire. Remember Madonna, when she used foul language? Or when Crispin Glover was tripping? If a guest messes up, he calls them on it, and its often a delight to see.

Re: Anyone see David Letterman last night? 9/24/08
I used to watch Dave nightly and for about 20 years he was the funniest guy in late night, but over the past few years his show has gone seriously downhill(and I'm not referring to anything political in this assessment). I don't know if it's his writers or the fact that he's getting older, but it just seems like he's been phoning it in for quite some time now. It's the same stuff every night(Great Moments in Presidential Speeches, Fun Facts, Will it Float, Top Ten List, etc) and it's just not funny anymore. He still has his moments from time to time, but I miss the old Dave that really used to put on a great show every night. Now I find myself enjoying Conan as much as I used to enjoy Dave because he has a very talented writing staff and he's just naturally funny as hell.

I did end up watching it. It wasn't nearly as bad as I was thinking it would be based on there being a thread about it.

I have seen Dave latch on to things before. That is the problem with his "Style". He seems to latch on to something and not let it go. When he does this, it starts off funny, but pretty soon I find myself thinking that I wish he would just drop it and move on.
I am not talking about just this particular time. Just in general.

Their is an article in todays NY Post that talked about how upset the CBS News division was that the Late Show took off-air live feed of McCain without permission.
Bring back John Doe! Or at least resolve the cliff-hanger with a 2hr movie or as an extra on a dvd release.

He was funny and relevant a lot more recently than 20 years ago, but as I said before the past 4-5 years he's definitely just been cashing the check. It's too bad because when he was at the top of his game there was nobody better except for Johnny Carson.

Try 4 or 5 as I previously stated. He's been funny a lot more recently than you give him credit for, but that doesn't change the fact that his show basically sucks now.
