How I Met Your Mother - season 4

"How I Met Your Mother" returns for a 4th season on CBS tonight, at 8:30 EDT (last season, it was the lead-in for "Big Bang Theory" but HIMYM got better ratings in the bottom half of the hour, so I guess that's why it stays there for this new season.

re: How I Met Your Mother - season 4

I admit that I have only seen about a handful of episodes from season 1 (which I really enjoyed) and that I really don't know much about this show and the characters, but I am recording this show tonight because of Neil Patrick Harris and his funny commercials for the show.

I actually own season 1 on dvd and when I get some down time, will start watching it.

Enjoy everyone!

How will Ted blow it this season?

That guy doesn't really deserve a nice woman if you ask me.

I am still a fan of the show, but I absolutley hate the idea of Barney and Robin together. I hope she catches one of his STDs. LOL

If the series ended with Barney and Robin together, I think that might be acceptable, but maybe they did this b/c they were running out of ideas for Barney's character?

Watched this back to back with Big Bang Theory: this was equally interesting and fun. I'm looking forward to another good season.

I'm a fan of the Barney-Robin connection. It made sense to me and seemed laid out as their path from the first season. In my mind it is not at all like the Joey-Rachel "we ran out of ideas" coupling.

Barney is the best thing about the show, so I want good things to happen to the character. I was a little disappointed that it looks like he'll be back to the same old Barney and just silently pine, but oh well.

I also kept picturing NPH as Dr. Horrible and kept waiting for him to break into song

"How I Met Your Mother: The Musical" - I'm sure Jason Segal is up for that episode as well, with muppets, of course.

We'd all be lucky to have Robin as a wingwoman.

i thought Ted not knowing Stella was a bit contrived. remember when they first started dating, they held off sex and he said all they did was talk. but hey, anything to make an episode revolve around Star Wars

Given the banks situation, it was weird to see Marshall get a job at GNB.

I liked Robin's delivery of her line "Oh my god, I just want you inside of me."

But overall, it was a bad scavenger-hunt type of episode.

Yeah, the bank thing was sort of a sensitive area after the last couple weeks.

The interesting thing is the following show, 2.5 Men, was centered on a lending dispute between the brothers.

I somehow missed Robin's line, but I thought she was super cute scrounging in the garbage.

I enjoyed this episode.

Specifically, when Marshall is describing the taste of the burger, and the scene almost exactly mirrors a great scene in Amadeus. I thought that was pretty brilliant.

We had to pause the DVR for about 5 minutes to work out the guffaws after Barney's line about the burger being so good he wanted to sew his ass up.

I thought Robin's line was "I want this meat inside of me." which made me think "That's What She Said!"

Cobie Smulders somehow made talking with your mouth full of food sexy.

I thought the episode was pretty great myself. I've never been to New York, but can relate to the scavenger hunt myself.

Those poor kids. Having to wait listen to 4 years of stories about how their dad met their mom.

Bring back John Doe! Or at least resolve the cliff-hanger with a 2hr movie or as an extra on a dvd release.

Anyone creeped out at the close-up of Marshall's mouth as he ate the burger in high definition? Not something I wanted to see.

I thought Robin's "meat" line was pretty risque and well done!

Neil Patrick Harris and Regis Philbin are buddies in real life. So it was amusing and very subtle that Neil did his impression of Philbin when Regis was pushing him around at the gym.

Re: How I Met Your Mother - season 4

Found this story on FARK and all I could think was,

"Barney, is that you?"

Lawsuit: Doctor stapled my rectum shut.

Quote:
Rectum case closed; jury sides with doctor

However, during an examination and exploratory surgery several days later, Watkins was notified Casiano had stapled his rectum shut, according to the suit...

As the trial was under way last week, Casiano's lawyer, Conrad W. Varner, said Watkins' bowels became swollen shut, in part, because of medical problems of his own doing, including his two-pack-a-day smoking habit.

"...And a serious obsession with hamburgers."

OK, all together now, "Rectum? He damned near killed him!"

BTW, Smulders did look extra-specially hot this week. Even in the cab scene where she had practically no lines and NPH was singing the bank jingle, she was the only one I could look at.

The ending seems to indicate that the gang won't be seeing Robin too much in the future?

The running gag with Barney needing a fist bump was pretty good.

Perhaps Robin's Japan job is a prelude to the season and series finale. Isn't this show, in spite of how well liked, losing it's audience a bit?

I think the show is ultimately unsustainable beyond five years. You can't drag the premise out without alienating fans.

I think Robin's Japan job will be the thing that

leads to a hairstyle change for Smulders. On one of the third season commentaries the producers said she expressed an interest in cutting her hair and they said they wanted to integrate it into the show.

Joe took a job* at a better station, so I'll substitute this week and say that Cobie's bike flip was amazing but nothing compared to her uber-cute dance as she ignored her cell phone.

I completely disagree--to be honest, the identity of the mother has never really been the cloying issue since season 2 or so. It's definitely more fun to watch the journey here than get the answers at the end. Besides, nobody's saying it has to end once we meet the mother. I'd hate for it to be like The King of Queens series finale which wrapped everything up in the last ten minutes and then did 30 seconds at the end showing the aftermath of it all. I don't want this show to rush to get to an ending.

Compare that to The Office, which, on paper is a more sustainable concept but has significantly declined in quality, going from a brilliant second season to gradually becoming wackier and less enjoyable.

Actually a ratings report (which, of course, are always to be taken with a grain of salt) I read today showed that How I Met Your Mother actually beating Heroes in the ratings this week.

I think the Office would be equally unsustainable if they made more of why there's a documentary crew following everyone around, like was done in the UK version. They've clearly glossed over that whole premise and are treating it merely as a "production style." It bothers me if I let myself think about it.

Re: How I Met Your Mother - season 4

Interesting turn of events.

I also have to say as someone who grew up, lives in NYC and is 6'2 and 250, I got a big sympathetic kick over Marshall's "I'm too big for New York!" rant as I completely identify. Little elf doorways and teeny subway seats and being the "bodega killer" when turning around and hitting my elbows into everything.

Re: How I Met Your Mother - season 4

As a non New York Cityer I found this episode less interesting than others. The story was good, but it had no emotional resonance. I have no opinion on NYC vs New Jersey and don't understand the big fight about it.

Perhaps betraying my suburban life, I thought Ted's expectation they would leave a house and neighborhood to live in a bachelor pad apartment just silly.

Re: How I Met Your Mother - season 4

Did anyone find this week's episode, Intervention, sort of schizophrenic?

Ted is moving, then he's not and Marshall agrees, then everyone follows along, then he is moving, then they meet back in 2009 seemingly unchanged going back up to the apartment. Not sure what the point was, if there was. And Robin mentions she is the girlfriend of some guy whose name I don't remember. Didn't see that one coming, but I guess it was a needed line to make the joke work. I guess I was hoping he'd get back with Robin, even though she is doesn't.

Re: How I Met Your Mother - season 4

While I adore this show, it's frustrating in the way it's always flirting with busting the gang up.

This weeks ep felt like the beginning of the end even though last I heard we will get another season after this one.

Stella isn't the mother.

I see it going one of two ways, Ted will end up not marrying her or they will get married but will ultimately divorce.

The point of this ep was to give us the end (the "year later" moment at the end) and then seeing how they get there in the coming season(s). My guess is that ONE of them still lives in the upstairs apartment a year later, the fun will be finding out who and if they are alone.

Remember, we are hearing the story from the adult Ted who has already lived through all of this so that gives the show amazing freedom to jump around and play with his past taking us from one point to another and seeing how they ended up there.

It's actually quite brilliant for a sitcom.

I would take a bazooka in the face for Robin.
