But I could be completely wrong. I vaguely remember reading something to that effect. I grew up watching TMP on television and the panning and scanning ruins these shots. A typical split diopter shot on TV would appear to have a large smudge on one side of the frame and the rest of the image (which would obviously be in focus) would be cropped off. |

Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far
It's probably been mentioned, but I was watching The View this morning and Sigourney Weaver was on and Whoopie Goldberg told her how much she loved Alien and that this year is the 30th Anniversary for that film. And the relevance for this thread is that 1979 was when TMP was released so this is also the 30th Anniversary for Star Trek The Motion Picture. Where did the time go? So this Blu Ray might be a 30th Anniversary edition? Or perhaps the proper 30th Anniversary edition will the be the DE later in the year.By the way, I saw a good chunk of Star Trek TMP yesterday and I never noticed before how many shots used the split diopter! A few times in Sickbay and outside in the lab area as well as a few times on the Bridge. I didn't note how many times, but quite a few! Many more then I realized, now I'll forever be looking for these shots!

But the Director's Edition is only 8."Because he's the hero that Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now... and so we'll hunt him... because he can take it... because he's not a hero... he's a silent guardian, a watchful protector... a DARK KNIGHT."

to Star Trek: TMP and then went on to mention The View, Whoopie Goldberg, and Segourney Weaver all in the same paragraph. Life as we know it is officially over.
Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far
Whoopi is officially Trek from TNG and Generations...Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far
Well, I could have mentioned Barbara Walters or Elizabeth Hasselback!
Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far
OK, I was making a joke. And yes, Whoopie is (grudingly) in the "Trek U", and I like Trek just as much as the next guy, but comparing Trek: TMP to Alien is like comparing a skidmark to the Mona Lisa... Sorry, I just had to say it.
Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far
I guess I was clumsily writing above. I was only comparing Alien to Trek by release year and that they both share an anniversary.Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far
And the same composer.Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

That's not fair at all--you should give ALIEN another try, it's really good, too!

From the other forum, we're hearing that some mix of movies and TOS: Season 1(!) will arrive, in Norway at least, on May 13:| Star Trek: The Motion Picture Trilogy on BD Star Trek-movie nr. 2, 3, 4 and 6 on BD Star Trek: The Original Series – Season 1 on BD ![]() ![]() |
Also, hopefully this means that an official Paramount announcement is imminent.

Just couldn't show all of the delta shield, could they? Not really a problem with the layout on the TV set, but chopping the top off on the movie set just looks lazy and wrong...--Det. William Somerset, SE7EN

Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far
From what I read at Digitalbits, 1-3 in a box set and 1, 2,3, 4, & 6 individually and no #5 at this time.......Why would they skip 5 unless they were redoing the FX? I can see why they'd save the TNG movies for later but to skip 5.....?
Can it be that they plan to release a TMP Director's cut (with upgraded to 1080p FX) and movie #5 (with new FX) at a later time?
Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far
Didn't Shatner want to do a Directors cut of ST 5?Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far
^ yes, but I thought I read that Paramount said no.-Jay

Maybe they changed their mind.Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far
For what it's worth, since we were talking about TMP and the different versions of it, I was inspired to watch the DVD of the Director's Edition a couple nights ago. Here are my impressions of it, post discussion:I see what they were going for with this new edition in terms of making the film "warmer", between tweaking color timing, trimming some of the dialogue that seemed out of character or cold, removing computer voices, shortening effects, etc. And on one level, it's effective, in that the film does feel better paced and flow a little better in the Director's Edition than it had in any earlier versions. However, I don't think the film itself, the writing, the direction, the performances, were in any way "warm" so there's really only so much you can do.
But too many of the new special effects stuck out like a sore thumb for me to revise my criticism on that. It's really quite a shocking transition, to go from the incredible work of Trumbull, et al, to a shot that looks like it came out of TNG. I will say that the work on Vulcan isn't nearly as bad as I remember it being. I think if I had been watching it on a smaller TV instead of my projector, it would have been a lot less obvious. I don't think I need to rehash all of my critiques of the effects (it would just put everyone on here back to sleep), but I hope you'll indulge me for one more example:
The scene in the lounge or recreation deck or whatever that room is called... where Kirk, Spock and McCoy speak as a window looks out into space. I totally forgot about the nacelle being digitally added as part of the window view, so it's not a change I was looking for or prepared to critique. But the second it appeared onscreen, something about the shot just seemed very wrong to me, and it actually took me a moment to figure out why. That's the kind of change where, I don't think there was anything wrong that needed to be fixed in the first place, the new effect draws attention to itself when it's the least important thing in the scene, and to me it has that "digital" look where it just doesn't appear to have the same weight or consistency as the model work.
Some people will love those changes; that's their right, and I don't think there's a "right" or "wrong" opinion to have here. But given my choice, I think I would take a version without all of the changes. When I finished watching the DVD, my thoughts could basically be summed up as:
Yeah, that was maybe a little better paced than the original version, but it's still not a very good movie.
(but I love it anyway)

This blu ray release info is all looking pretty cool, but I am holding back any excitement till we have a proper release announcement. The lack of Star Trek 5 inclusion could be a European thing. The Star Trek Motion Picture trilogy thing makes no sense as the real trilogy is Treks 2,3 and 4. Again, I bet it's a European thing. Well know soon enough it appears!
Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far
I concur, Nelson. 2,3, and 4 would form a proper trilogy, as they deal with the entire Spock character arc post V'Ger.\"My opinion is that (a) anyone who actually works in a video store and does not understand letterboxing has given up on life, and (b) any customer who prefers to have the sides of a movie hacked off should not be licensed to operate a video player.\"-- Roger Ebert

It wouldn't surprise me if it's just a European thing. As for Trek V, I assume it's just a lack if information at this stage. The cover art... not bad, if I do say so myself.

Anywhoo, even 2,3,4 and 6 would make more sense than just 1,2, and 3. I don't really understand it either.
Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far
The Digital Bits: Celebrating Film on Disc - DVD & Blu-rayDigitalbits is confirming today a spock/kirk set of all 6 films (I-VI) for the US including Theatrical cuts of II and VI (first time on video)
and Season 1 with both the original fx versions and new CGI versions.
Hope this all pans out.
Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far
Okay, so we have the first 6 movies, original theatrical versions AND TOS S1 with both the original and remastered effects.I am officially on board. Very very expensive, but definitely on board.

Blu-ray Update: TOS Season 1 + TOS Movies Coming May 2009 | TrekMovie.comThe Digital Bits: Celebrating Film on Disc - DVD & Blu-ray
"As originally reported back in November on The Digital Bits, Star Trek I-VI will be released on Blu-ray in the U.S. in May in a 6-film "Kirk/Spock" box set, each with remastered picture and sound.
This set will include Star Trek V here in the States, though other regions may offer different disc configurations/packaging options.
Star Trek I, II and IV will each be the original theatrical versions. (If I'm not mistaken, this would mark the first time that The Voyage Home has EVER been available on home video in its theatrical version - even on VHS - and the first time that The Motion Picture has been available in its theatrical version since its initial VHS release.
Note that we also expect the remaining Next Generation films to be released in a 4-film Blu-ray box set at a later date.)
At least some new extras have been created for this release, including "famous fan" commentary tracks for each film, as well as a featurette offering select scenes from a Klingon performance of Hamlet by the Commedia Beauregard (filmed in St. Paul, Minnesota - see the group's original press release and this previous report at Trek Movie). It's unknown yet whether these will be BD-exclusive, or if there will be a simultaneous standard DVD release.
What's more, we've learned that CBS will finally release Star Trek: The Original Series - Season One on Blu-ray on the same street date in May as the movies. The release is currently planned to include BOTH the original broadcast versions as well as the new Remastered versions of each episode."
Superb news!!! Who said that Blu-ray doesn´t deliver! Both original broadcast versions as well as the new Remastered versions of each episode? Let´s hope this is true. It´s time to double dip, then.

I'm joining you Jason (though I'll probably rent the first season of TOS).

The writer is obviously an idiot--he's clearly referring to VI, not IV. And if this is true--theatrical versions only of I, II and VI--then I'm officially out. Forget it. There's no justification for not offering both cuts, at least for II and VI, at this time.

Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far
Okay, now I can let myself get a little excited. What I didn't see coming here is the original theatrical versions of ST 2 and 6. I think this means that the studio is listening to the fans. And it also nicely sets them up for the fans to double dip for the super duper DC versions at the time Star Trek 11 is released.
The other aspect of the news that I didn't see coming regarding the TOS Season 1 sets is the inclusion of the original broadcast versions. That's a huge deal and while that's not fully confirmed, is very welcome news. I heard early rumors that would not happen and again, they're listening to us!
