Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

__________________

As for the cut scenes From Trek 3......

The long scene between Kirk & McCoy in the turbo-lift was filmed and Nimoy said it gave too much away about McCoy having Spock's mind, so he cut it.

The magazines of the day showed photos of McCoy from this scene where McCoy is wearing his white surgical jacket and a couple days of beard growth. He didn't wear that white jacket in any remaining scene in trek 3.

A barfight was filmed and Nimoy said it had to be cut because it just didn't work.

Most of what was cut from the movies are not whole scenes----they are sections of scenes that were cut. It is easy to prove a scene that was entirely cut was filmed because you have the actors in a unique setting.
Proving they actually filmed portions of scenes are not as easy.

David & Saavik flirting in the 'Eden cave' from Trek 2 was mentioned by Merrit Butrick as having been filmed and he was unhappy it was cut.
And of course, the mention of Sulu getting promoted from Trek 2 is a legend as Takei claims that Shatner ruined the scene of purpose.

The best sources for proof scenes were filmed are the period magazines becuase the studio used cut footage as stills for publicity often.
As in the cut line , "The wait is over." from Trek 11 was used in the trailer.

The famous poster/vhs box cover of Trek 2 featuring photos from the movie have a frame of the original Kirk vs. David fight with David holding a knife to Kirk's throat exactly as is described in the script. That's the POV of Carol when she blurts out that Kirk is David's father thus defusing the fight.
I hope I llive to see those deleted scenes.

Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

Rare and poor quality but interesting as the TOS actors do give performances in character!
YouTube - Star Trek

Also, not sure if everyone knows that there exists an unfinished CGI project which was originally intended to be a PC CD-Rom computer game in the late 1990's. Its called The Secret Of Vulcan Fury and what makes this so special is that all 7 TOS actors did their characters for this cancelled game so it's the last time they ever did all of them for the same project which I guess makes it pretty rare and valuable nowadays. The game at the time looked totally incredible as it had ahead of its time 3D CGI renderings of all 7 TOS crew as they looked in the 1960's TV series so was literally a CGI extension to the 1960's series. It contained 6 episodes and was written by DC Fontana. It got cancelled by Interplay after they had spent over $10M on it for approx 40% finished game (lot of money for a game in those days) as all the CGI was done on a proprietary animation system and very expensive to create. Interplay must still hold the audio masters but someone somewhere @ Paramount should look into this and using those tapes & the DC Fontana storylines create it for modern gaming systems or even as a one off TV/Bluray project. Failing that put it onto future Blurays in a comicbook style story with the voiceovers to at least give the fans the final tos crew adventure where they all contributed and interacted in the story. Most likely these voicetapes have been forgotten about or the people who initiated the project back in the day have since long moved on to other companies.

It was a swooping camera beauty shot which slowly went around the side of the ship then up behind the dovetail and around again all in one shot (which was a big feat for mocon in those days). Probably cost a lot of money as well but Meyer cut it as he wanted a tighter pace in the battle for peace which is where it was edited. AFAIK never ever been seen in public so who knows why this could not have been included this time as no actors to negotiate with.

I think part of the shot ends up in the final cut, briefly seen on the Bird of Prey's viewscreen when Chang quotes the "Prick us do we not bleed" speech as he's attacking the Enterprise.

A few other things:

There's a still from STII that I remember that has Kirk staring intently through what look like prison bars as Spock stands behind him. I have no idea what scene that could be from. I think it may be on the back of one of the intial video releases.

In the comic adaptation of Star Trek V, Spock's "pain" that was removed by Sybok was a very young Spock begging to join Sybok when he was leaving Vulcan and Sybok refusing to have him come along. I have no idea whether this was shot, or part of an earlier draft or just something the people who penned the comic made up.

Lastly, if you think Sean Connery as Sybok was strange, how about Eddie Murphy as Gillian Taylor in Star Trek IV! I remember reading about it in Starlog. Apparently, in an early draft, Murphy's character was a school teacher or professor specializing in whales and plays a recording of whales singing for his students and that's what Uhura initially hones in on. They go to the coordinates expecting to find whales, and upon finding Murphy's character, explain their story to him, and he decides to help them find some whales.

I do remember that! It was on the front of the VHS, IIRC. The title ST II was in the middle and images from the movie formed a rectangle around it.

Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

Actually I did a google image search an found it, albiet with a little more picture on the top and bottom and it appears to be an access ladder that they're climbing due to the turbolift being inoperative. It appears to be during the scene from the EE where Kirk points out to Spock that David's his son:

This might have been staged for a publicity still or there was more to the scene.

That scene or part of it was in the Director's cut of ST 2 of Spock, Kirk and Saavik using ladders as the turbo lifts were not working after returning from the Genesis cave if i recall correctly.

Okay, as per Camper, I dug up Volume 3 Issue 5 of Star Trek The Magazine and it did have this ad for the ST2 DVD set.

The next issue that had an ad was Volume 3 Issue 7, it has this Star Trek 3 ad:

And finally, this ad appears in Volume 3 Issue 11 for Star Trek 4. Sadly, the Star Trek Magazine ends publication with the next issue. Shortly after a lot of good Star Trek Nemesis coverage.

Perhaps the ad Steve (Camper) is recalling is from Star Trek Communicator magazine. I had look through several issues and I don't see it yet. But I can look a little more. The fan magazine also had an issue devoted almost entirely to the Star Trek The Motion Picture DE DVD.

That's what I deduced after finding a photo of it on the net. But the odd thing is that both Kirk and Spock are clearly reacting to something in front of them. So how that fits into that scene I have no idea.

Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

That still may also be a posed shot from the time they were filming that scene.

They did take some publicity shots on the various sets as well, as the previous poster pointed out.

Nelson, thanks for trying to find that. I'm hope it wasn't too much of trouble.
Could have been from the communicator mag., but I don't want you to go to any further bother if you don't want to.

It'll pop up somewhere I'm sure.

Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

Steve- Not too much trouble, I was really curious to see if I could find what you described. It was kinda fun revisiting it. That was a well made and produced magazine. I appreciated the effort the illustrators made in creating imagery of the sets, props and ships.

I did thumb through all the issues I had from 2001 to 2004 of The Communicator magazine too. I did not see any ads there either that promoted the DVD to include all new or reworked effects. At the time these DVD's came out, I don't ever recall seeing any kind of information that hinted the effects would be redone for the 6 Star Trek films, other then Star Trek The Motion Picture.

Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

And here's a link to the video of some cut scenes from Trek 2

YouTube - Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan Deleted Scenes

Please note that the scene at the end with Kirk, Saavik & David is choppy because this promo was BEFORE the movie was released and the were trying to hide the fact that David is Kirk's son at that point. So the dialogue has been looped and cut. The full scene would have run longer.

Also note that if in fact you didn't see the video of the part with Spock mentioning Saavik's Romulan heritage---- a simple photo of that scene wouldn't be good proof it existed because it would simply look like the rest of the 'Academy corridor' scene.

But other scenes such as McCoy operating on Chekov's ear and Chekov waking up later on the bio-bed and demanding to be allowed to go to the bridge are proveable by photo because they couldn't be any other existing scene from the movie.

Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

And here's a link to the 'alternate ABCTV version' of the turbo-lift scene from Trek 2.

You can tell this is a different take because of Alley's attitude is more sultry & flirty. They used this version on TV in 1985 because they thought the 'single shots' would work better than a heavy pan & scan of the widescreen version.

YouTube - Star Trek: The Wrath Of Khan - Alternate Scene

Too bad since this stuff is Paramount property anyway, they just didn't grab it and include it on the DVD/Blu-rays. I guess they just didn't figure anybody would care to see it.

Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

I watched all 6 movies.. they look fine to me. it was the first time that I had watch them back to back.

I would say that star trek 1,3,4,5, and 6 look better then star trek 2.
the sound on star trek 1 was really good.

Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

I would have to disagree Bats. What sized display are you watching on? I can't speak for 1, 5, or 6 as I only bought the Blu-Ray trilogy, but of 2, 3, and 4, Khan definately looks the most natural and filmlike. The color scheme takes some getting used to, but the film looks spectacular. Search For Spock looks pretty good but has some noticeable instances of DNR which caused some frozen grain. Voyage Home has unacceptable amount of DNR. In the San Francisco street scenes, the characters look like waxworks. All of these are definitely better than their DVD counterparts, but 2 is the only excellent HD transfer. 3 and 4 seem like older masters that were overly manipulated to look acceptable.

Well, I know I said much earlier in this thread that I wouldn't buy this set, but since Amazon has it on sale for $64.99 I couldn't resist. Less than $10 a disc including The Captains Summit Bonus Disc. No way could I pass that up.

Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

Picked it up for $65 at Best Buy Friday night, and glad I did. Yes, the transfers sans II have been overly processed, but strangely they still tend to have a lot more detail and sharpness than some of the worst DNR offenders I have seen (such as Dark City). It's almost like some strange new form of noise reduction was applied, with the "Photoshop" effect shown in screenshots showing up briefly throughout 4 and 6 in particular. In motion though, on my 47" Panny, they destroy the SD releases, to the point where at $65 it's a no brainer for Trek fans. I do hope they dial the DNR waay down for the inevitable Director's Editions, but if you've got a 47"-50" display, I think you'll be pleased.

Honestly, though I loathe DNR and EE, Star Trek II almost feels too far in the opposite direction to me - for a movie that was given a restoration, detail and pop are lacking compared to other recent restorations like the Godfather films (though granted that had the Lowry touch given to it).

Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

I have a quick question for those that have the first season of star trek on bluray and the movie sets.

thanks.
