Film to DVD/BlueRay Transfer

With film transfers to DVD they were mostly replicated as the director intended. Now with BlueRay, 1080P, we read about many buyers complaining about a grainy, soft or lack of color film to BlueRay transfer. Blame is being placed on the replicator using poor source material.

These perceptions are mostly wrong. Directors purposely use special filming techniques to obtain the "mood of the movie". Movies like Saving Private Ryan and Letters from Iwo Jima were purposely washed out to place the viewers back in time when B&W film was the standard.. Three Kings was filmed with high contrast to better obtain the feeling of extreme heat. When movies like these three are transfered to BlueRay they do not need to be fixed as some think.

This is a very serious issue because many complaints are unfounded and if we can't educate the public about filming techniques BlueRay will end up looking like the cartoon network. Grain is part of film and needs to be included in the transfer if the director intended the movie to have a gritty look. For the most part grain is not a bad thing, yet many continue to complain about grainy transfers.

It won't be easy but somehow we need to educate the public that "Pitch Black" does not need to be fixed. The high contrast was used by the director to create the feeling of extreme heat. Hopefully we will be able to nip this very big problem in the bud.

Re: Film to DVD/BlueRay Transfer

You are both in the wrong area and very late to the party. Go to the HT Software - High Definition area, and you will find numerous threads discussing the necessity of maintaing a film-like look in Blu-ray transfers. (Note that there is no "e" in "Blu-ray").
