HDMI Video Pass Through Only (Hook up questions)

I have heard two theories on hooking up my Onkyo HT-S5100 receiver (HDMI pass through only) to a DVD and DVR to a Samsung Plasma.

One side says to hook up the following:

DVD via HDMI to Onkyo
DVR via HDMI to Onkyo
Onkyo via HDMI to Plasma
plus...
DVD via Optical audio to Onkyo (corresponding)
DVR via Optical audio to Onkyo
No Optical audio required from Onkyo to Plasma (supposedly)

The other theory is as follows...

DVD via HDMI to Onkyo
DVR via HDMI to Onkyo
Onkyo via HDMI to Plasma
then for audio....
Plasma via Optical audio (out) to Onkyo audio optical input

What is the correct way to hook this up? I am so confused?????

So my real question For Audio is as follows:

1. Do I run the Optical for audio from the DVD to the Onkyo and from the DVR to the Onkyo or.....
2. Do I just leave the DVD and DVR connected with only HDMI and run the Optical from the Plasma (out) to the audio (in) on the Onkyo?

Would either of these two scenarios work?

Would it be better to connect each of my devices (DVD/DVR) direct to the Plasma and bypass the Onkyo and only connect the Plasma (out) to the Onkyo via optical for sound?

Would running my DVD/DVR through the Onkyo via HDMI cause any problems with video quality.

That is the correct way to get video to the plasma.

That is the correct way to get audio to the Onkyo. To have audio, your Onkyo must be turned on. Your TV is only being used as a video monitor.

This would be used if you are using the internal ATSC or QAM tuner of your plasma and want to get multi-channel audio to your Onkyo receiver. There are very rare occaisions where your TV will pass multi-channel audio from the HDMI inputs to the digital audio outputs. You need to check your owner's manual or better yet, test it yourself.

They both are depending on how you use your system.

HDMI is a digital signal. You either get the best picture quality or you get nothing. There is very little in between.

And speaking of HDMI. The $100+ HDMI cables from Best Buy will give you the exact same picture quality as the $5 HDMI cables from Monoprice. Same with the digital audio cables.
