SB12-Plus or MFW-15

Title says it all , which of these 2 subs is the better bang for the buck?

Being one who has built , hmm probably 10 subs and 2 IB set ups
I have aquired a taste for good bass.

Why not build another? That is a long story, in short I got a
traumatic brain injury in a motorcycle accident.

So this is my first home theater since early 2006. Before that
I had a number of home theaters and all kinds of different equipment ,
speakers etc.

I like the size of the SVS one but would give that up for better bass.

Back in the day the biggest sub I ever built was a dual Tempest
sub 6' high and it weighed in at close to 600 lbs. :-)

thanks

Re: SB12-Plus or MFW-15

I remember the Big Pig sub as well as your Blueprint IB.

The MFW-15 is more your speed. Ported and more efficient. It should dig much lower than the SB12. Mark Seaton did a great job designing it.

Re: SB12-Plus or MFW-15

He he, thanks for remembering my Big Pig, I forgot the name. :-)

One thing I remember is that it is hard to make big bass in
a small package.

Mark Seaton, that name rings a bell who is he again?

Traumatic brain injuries suck, my short term memory is bad
and I lost some long term stuff too.

Well I pulled the trigger on the MFW-15, av123 has
a deal going, I got the elt525 towers , center and shelfs
and the sub for $1598 shipped.

This will be my first HT in a very long time , I am excited.

Re: SB12-Plus or MFW-15

Mark worked with Tom Danley at ServoDrive. The subs that used servo motors instead of magnets to move the cones. Both left. Mark now has a consultant company called Seaton Sound. High end home theater sound systems, recording studios and design services. He worked with Mark from AV123 on the MFW-15. There is at least one thread at the AV123 forum that documents the different prototypes. Very interesting read. He had to hit not only a price point but a weight and size point as well since these are being shipped to the customer. He squeezed every last bit of performance from that sub. Tom has designed a sub that may even satisfy your bass needs - Matterhorn.

Bass and small enclosures are best covered in Hoffman's Iron Law.

Congrats on getting back in to home theater. Browse the Projects section here. All of your old posts should still be there. They just combined the DIY section with the Dedicated Home Theater section. Maybe it will stir up some old memories and get you on the right track.

Hey James,

I remember Big Pig, also. Those early Shiva/Tempest days were fun times. Sorry to hear about your injury...hope you're doing well, and enjoy your new HT!

Jack, your name rings a bell. Did you post at HTT too?

Well 8/2/06 I was on a motorcycle ride in B.C. Canada with 2
friends. We were driving along a road staggered as motorcyclist ride.
I was in the middle by the center of the road.
A truck was going along in the shoulder with his right blinker on
and he decided to swing into a driveway on the other side of the road.
The guy in front of me was closer to the shoulder , he went down.
Me , close to the center line could not get away. I hit him at
40mph or so.
I was hurt bad, I was lifeflighted to Harborview hospitial in Seattle
were I spent a month. I was in a coma for 9 days .
Ive no memory of any of this , my memory gone from about a month
before the accident til 2.5 months after.
Anyhow one nurse who was treating me at a care center after I left the
hospital did some research and found out that the accident was not
my fault and found me a lawyer in Vancouver BC.
Long story short , in July we had a mediation on my lawsuit.
ICBC offered me alot of money and I took it.
Ive bought a house and now need an HT. :-)

Here are some pics of my new home at Home Theater Lounge,

A bit. In the DIY forum here, too, back around the turn of the millennium.

Sounds you have had a very serious injury, and that we're lucky to have you around. Cool house! That backyard would have passed for a public park were I was born.
