Wow. Pete, sounds like you have an awesome collection. I have about 400.
Vampire movies rock. Are you a fan of Fright Night from 1985?

Oh yeah... It's one of my favorites.... some of my favorite Vampire movies include (in no particular order)...
  1. Fright Night
  2. Near Dark
  3. Salem's Lot
  4. From Dusk til Dawn
  5. John Carpenter's Vampires
Sure there is others... but that is off the top of my head at least.

I really enjoyed I Bury The Living too... I got that one on a cheap free dvd. It came in that free 20 Disc 40 Movie boxset you got for subscribing to Total Movie Magazine.

I am a bit embarrassed to say that I never got to see the Dr. Phibes movies... but that is because I used to not give the classics a chance... if they were pre-1980s I wouldn't even consider it... but don't worry... I learned better... just still catching up now.
Whole month, me too! Can't wait.

I paid $5 each for a bunch of those MGM MM DVDs when Walmart had a display. I was so happy that year. I have yet to see a Halloween themed DVD sale that was as good.

My fav too! Better than Christmas by far!

I Bury the Living is so good! I love the scoring on that one. As if the story needed a jolt of tension it gets it anyway.

Dr. Phibes I adore. Theater of Blood is also pretty fun...although it does have that nasty poodle incident!
Radioman,

It's been so long since I've seen The Changling--I can't recall if I own it in widescreen or not.

I don't own all of the Dr. Phibes films. Those are on my wish list. I don't believe I've ever seen Theater of Blood, if you can believe that.

There is a chill in the air outside tonight. We're getting near the best time of year (at least for me).

A guy on the rottentomatoes.com forum reminded me of the Changling a few years ago. Glad I finally picked it up last year. I love a good ghost story even though Im not a die hard believer in ghosts.

The 2 Phibes can be bought in a single set. oldies.com should have the singles. Also Theater of Blood. Those are so much fun! discussing them here makes me want to go home from work now and watch em!! Blood is definitely the weakest. Price plays a mroe intense character, and some say much less fun to watch. Not me, I love it! The Theater of Blood double feature DVD has Madhouse on it. I'll have to rebuy that someday to get Madhouse. It's also good. All these are pretty similar, but somehow, for me anyway, they are each still fun on their own. I wouldn't watch them in a marathon though.

The Girl who Lived Down the Lane is superb. It's almost as Halloween atmospheric as the movie Halloween. I recommend Dead Zone (Cronenberg/Walken version) to go along with this one for some reason.

.
Cannibal Holocaust-scared to death of this thing! Is it even worth it for braggin rights?

.

I think the Changeling & Little Girl Who Lived Down the Lane are the best of the list.

What I don't like about Cannibal Holocaust, and some other Cannibal movies, is the real killing of animals for film entertainment. I can't remember which is which, but skinning an animal alive, or cutting off the top of a monkey's skull and such for real is a pretty sick standard for entertainment. I don't remember which animals were killed in that movie, as there's a few that used the same idea. Outside of that, I don't think that cannibal movie nor the other ones are worth the "braggin' rights". It's okay, but overrated.

As far as what I bought, I finally got around to the out of print CasaNegra titles of Mexican horror, Fox Horror Volume 2, Grapes of Death, Cyclone, Madame O, and hopefully something on the spooky side before it's too late.

You sure do make Theater of Blood sound tempting. We've talked about how much we like Vincent Price. I may eventually want to get every film he ever did one day.

I have found that I really enjoy Vincent Price myself. So far he is my favorite classic genre actor. As of right now I have...
  1. An Evening with Edgar Allen Poe
  2. The Tomb of Ligeia
  3. The Fly
  4. Return of the Fly
  5. The Last Man on Earth
  6. House on Haunted Hill
  7. House of Wax
  8. Tales of Terror
  9. The Tingler
I know there is a lot that I am missing... but not to bad of a start.

Re: Stocking up on Horror Movies

Vampire movies are probably my least favorite horror sub genre. That said, there are a few that are among my all time favorite horror/monster movies
Blacula & Scream Blacula, Scream
Count Dracula (BBC version)
Captain Kronos Vampire Hunter
Nosferatu the vampyre (Herzogs version)
The two Blacula movies and the BBC show suprised the hell out of me. They were blind buys that I was hoping I'd dig, but I never expected them to engage me as much as they did. YMMV, needless to say, but they sure tickled the hell out of me.
I've been working my way thru the Dark Shadows sets which has in turns quite a lot of fun and quite frustrating. For a while I would kick off every night of movie watching with one ep of DS. I've just exhausted the last of the sets I bought cheap when Media Play went bust this past week.
It's a shame Night Gallery S2 won't be out a month earlier. Kind of bizzare scheduling on Uni's part.
Just a heads up, Amazon has an MGM 3/$10 sale going on now- there are a few MMs, the Blacula films, and other horror titles like Squirm. Good deal if don't already have them.

I don't like the idea of the animal stuff either. I heard about the turtle and monkey, plus the little piglet and I'm not in too much of a hurry to see all that. I'll have to wash my eyes out with something like Beetlejuice or Little Shoppe of Horrors after it, I'm sure.

I bought me some Spanish surreal stuff for this year too. About 5 films. Including Mansion of Madness. I watched a PD version last year, loved it so much I wanted the official. I'm really looking forward to those.

I want to do that too! I bought a bunch of his this year that I didn't have. Including Monster Club which I saw on a Elvira VHS tape we rented and LOVED! Can't wait for that one. It's available at amazon.com for about $11.50 shipped. I don't remember much of it, but I've heard good things about it. I also finally bought the Masque of the Red Death set that includes a film with Ray Milland called Premature Buriel.

1. The Raven

3. House of Wax
4. Edward Scissorhands
5. Last Man on Earth
6. Witchfinder General

Radioman,

Your mention of Elvira reminds me of a wonderful ditty that used to be on television in the early 1970s--Simon's Sanctorum. Do you remember that? It was a lot of fun watching his show. He would feature many wonderful films (including a ton of B-flicks) on the weekends. I also remember Creature Feature, which eventually morphed into Creature Double Feature. I believe one of those shows used some of the music of Emerson, Lake, and Palmer as one of its theme songs (I think it was Karn Evil 9, but I'm not exactly certain of that, as it has been almost thirty-five years since I have seen either of those shows).

Simon was played by Gary Newton:

Yeah, good stuff. I've never seen The Tingler. The trailer is classic. But I need to get on the ball and pick it up.

Awesome picture Scott.

Hey, I was afraid of late night horror movies until the mid 70s. I remember vividly catching the half man/half bird Peter Lorre from The Raven when I was very small (5 or 6 tops). That really stayed with me throughout my life. In the 90s I was watching it and nearly fell out of my chair when that scene appeared.

I'd caught the opening of one of those shows, they showed a skull and I couldn't turn the TV off fast enough. My mom, bless her heart, told me not to be a scardy cat and try out The Wolfman or Frankenstein. She knew I'd like em and she was right! I think Creature from the Black Lagoon was the first truly horrifying movie I'd seen. I couldn't sleep that night! JAWS was probably next.

Sadly, here in GA we had Shock Theater with this child molester named Count Justin. Luckily I didn't know at the time that he was molesting children. Even his wife was involved. But they showed everything from classic Universal to stuff like Creeping Terror, The Blob, extreme b/z grade-movies, ...

The Creature From the Black Lagoon, in my opinion, stands up very well as far as the creep factor is concerned. It's been years since I've seen Revenge Of the Creature and The Creature Walks Among Us, but that first film still sends chills up my spine when I see it. I'm thinking it has mostly to do with a wonderful make-up job on the creature, the music during its appearances (quite different than when it is off screen), and the factor of that which is unknown--like when you know something is moving in the deep, dark, and murky waters, but you can't really see it.

An Evening with Edgar allen Poe sounds very interesting. I'm off to Amazon.com to look for it.

Re: Stocking up on Horror Movies

I been going over Amazon this morning... getting an idea of what new horror movies I should buy when I get paid again (Oct. 3rd). I came up with a list. This list can easily change if say something goes out of stock... something better comes up on sale... someone here is able to change my mind for one reason or another. Anyway... here is what I am considering at this point... with my reasoning behind the choices...
  1. Alien vs. Preditor: Requiem - To be honest I never even seen the trailer for this one yet... but I did enjoy the first one so willing to give it a go.
  2. Halloween III: Season of the Witch - I could hear you all moaning as I typed this one... I know this has nothing to do with the other Halloween movies. But I have seen this one... and apart from the title I kinda enjoyed the actual story. I really think more people would have enjoyed this movie if it was called something else.
  3. The Mist - I have really enjoyed most of the movies based on King's work... so I am really looking forward to checking this one out.
  4. The Amityville Horror: Dollhouse - I remember seeing this one many years ago... we are talking VHS days here... and even though I barely remember the actual story... I do believe I remember enjoying this one.
  5. The Curse of Lizzie Borden - OK... This one is one that isn't really up for debate (unfortunately!) I made a deal with a friend on another forum... if I buy and watch his worst horror movie experience (as in absolutely terrible movie).. he will buy and watch mine. And this is his. I know... it sounds like a completely idiotic deal... but I gave my word. Besides... it means he is buying and watching The Sorority.
  6. Diary of the Dead - Romero Zombie Movie... no more needs to be said in my opinion.
  7. 100 Years of Horror: Complete Collection - 5 Disc set Documentary on Horror hosted by Christopher Lee... Sounds like fun and possibly a great way to learn of other horror movies to add to my collection.
  8. Lost Boys: The Tribe - The first Lost Boys is one of my favorite vampire movies... yeah I heard this one doesn't do it justice... but I just have that feeling that I need to see it for myself.
Anyway... that is what I was thinking for my next order. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Lizzie Bordon!! That is the most awesomely cool thing I've heard in a while. Great idea. I've never seen that or Sorority, but maybe you got the worst end of this deal?

Halloween III is slightly underrated. I think it's pretty good. The trailer scared me when I saw it before some film. Also, the similar "The Stuff" is a lot of fun too.

I've avoid the AvP flicks even though I have a desire to see them. Word of mouth has not been good for either.

For some reason I'm turned off by The Mist. I read the story and listened to the audio play, so I guess I just feel I have it all covered. The movie looks okay though.

I bought the amityville remake and I'm really looking forward to it. The original version is among the film I feel was much much MUCH better when I was a kid. The pig in the window thing haunted me for years. Holy hell, that was scary. But as an adult it was sort of funny instead. I don't remember liking any of the original sequels for this.

I've heard The Tribe is awful. Also, Dairy of the Dead I heard isn't very good...I didn't care for Land of the Dead, but need to see it again. I agree...judge for yourself!

That documentary sounds fantastic. I have Terror in the Aisles, which is basically a horror movie clip show featuring the most exciting moments from the genre up to the early 80s. Hosted by Donald Pleasance and Nancy Allen. No DVD yet. But you can buy it on VHS. It's really really fun! But it does give away the most exciting parts (i.e., Psycho "shower scene", 1978 Invasion of the Body Snatchers "classic final shot", The Shining "Here's Johnny", etc). But still, it's a damn fun time. I plan to watch it before next month.

I really enjoyed the Amityville remake. Of course I still enjoy the original as well. I have a soft spot for the Amittyville movies... some reason even though the later ones are not that good... for some reason I like to watch them.

That trailer was hysterical! You were REALLY rough on each other. Although the trailer for LIzzie looks to indicate some nudity! "Okay...okay...you win! You win! You're Lizzie Borden! Now put down the ax..." Now Sorority looks to have a very nice paddling scene! Woo hoot! Interesting that one has a mostly white cast the other black. You got salt, he got pepper!

I love the house they use for the Amityville flicks. Omen is the one that really held up. I used to compare those 2 for some reason.

Yeah, if Halloween III was just called Season Of The Witch, it probabaly would already have a remake since it's a John Carpenter production from the late 1970's/early 1980's.

OK... Need the thoughts of you Classic horror fans! I good friend of mine just let me know he sent me some DVDs in the mail. He is one of the ones that got me into giving classics a chance... so he likes to send me classics now and again... well one of the ones he sent me this time is a classic horror that I know little to nothing about...

The Golem

Pretty much all I know is it is a classic Silent Horror from Germany that they say inspired Frankenstein.

So... Thoughts?

Re: Stocking up on Horror Movies

I liked it. not as stylish as other German horror like "NOSFERATU", but it does the trick.
Who knew a credit card could scream?

What I'm listening to right now!

-Halloween III Absolutely nothing wrong with this movie. Great soundtrack, eerie(and cheesy) film. Got a bad rep because no Michael, but worlds better than 4, and 5.
