Just purchased the Epson 1080 UB

It arrives Friday, the 5th so I'm looking for any helpful tips, tweaks or set-up suggestions from those that has this PJ. I have a DIY screen and 100% light control in my theater room. It's replacing a Sanyo Z3.

Ron, mine is a few months old and I LOVE it.

I use Cinema Black 1 color mode for all viewing. Sources are a Samsung 5000 HD DVD/Blu-ray player and a cable-system HDDVR; cable is 2 HDMIs into the 2 inputs.

When room light is low, I use the Low bulb setting; when my movie watching is casual and I'm also reading, or when I watch TV, usually I use the High bulb setting. I HATE anything approaching orange faces, so my Saturation is usually -10 to -20. Good luck.

Thanks Jeff, seems the Cinema Black 1 is the most popular setting. I just checked and she's airborne right now and is due to land tonight with a delivery tomorrow. I cannot wait! Finally 1080p!

The Epson is a sweet unit. It is capable of very accurate colors once the CMS (Color Management System) is properly setup.

If any of you are interested in a professional calibration, which will acheive the fullest potential of the PJ, just send me an email and I will get you in touch with a competant calibrator (with the appropriate tool).

Sorry Dan, been watching too many movies. Actually, until the unit gets about 200 hours on it and I can spin AVIA there's not a whole lot to say other then...very easy set-up, Theater Black 1 out of the box is excellent but I did adjust a few settings, very minor though. Colors are vivid, blacks are beautiful, deep, dark and detailed, even on my DIY white screen. Sharpness and detail is fantastic and the PJ is dead quite, no fan noise at all. This is most likely the best upgrade my theater has seen in a very long time, this PJ is nothing short of awesome.

Cool. I don't tinker much, so having it play that well out of the box is gonna be sweet. ordered it, should be here early part of next week and then set up by next weekend.

Ron, not sure why on earth you would wait 200 hours to use AVIA. The disc takes less then 5 minutes to use and the results will be immediate and stunning. USE IT ONCE, USE IT OFTEN.

Question for you Gregg. Would it be a waste of money to have this PJ ISF even if I'm only using a DIY screen? Or should I wait until I buy a professional grade?

I think I'll hold off until I get a proper screen then. Mine is just a sheet of mdf painted flat white.

What I want to do is find a screen manufacturer and just buy a sheet of fabric and wrap my mdf with it.

Best of luck Ron. I've said this before many times but it was your review...journal if you will of the 2003 Panasonic PT-L200u projector that got me in the world of front projection.

Seriously...it's been all front projection since and there's no going back!

That eventually led to other offerings which led to my first 1080p projector purchase back in Feb. (Sony Pearl).

You'll love the Epson Ron and here's hoping you find it meeting your expectations.

Thanks Tim, I remember that thread, what, about 5 years ago or so. Long time. I will agree, once you go FP you don't go back. I do love this UB, it is awesome, so much better in every way over my Z3. Congrats on the Pearl as well. Thanks again Tim!

I am also thinking of buying this projector as everything I have read about it is great. However, will probably wait until next year either a new model or a lower price as I am building a new house and will be putting in a theater room it that home therefore would be just siting around until then.

Got a questions on the UB and screen size... I am new to projectors, does screen size detract from the projector. What is a decent range of screen size before the brightness/quality is affected? I was thinking of going 110".

Absolutely a smart thing to do. Pricing drops quarterly, and quality is going up with every model update.

As you go up with screen size you will decrease light out. The 1080ub does have a lot of light output (relative to competitors in the same space). 110", especially anamorphic, will look awesome in a dedicated / controlled lighted room.

Funny thing is, no matter when you buy, what you buy or how much you pay for it, there will always be the better deal soon after. Never fails with this hobby.
