Help with HTCP audio output to surround sound

My computer I'm also setting up to be used as a HTPC is found here:

Dell Dimension C521 Desktop « CyberIndian Tech

*In the specs it says it has an "Audio Line Out (1/8″ Mini)." It has a picture of the back of the computer there and just wondering which part is the "audio line out."

So will this work:
I have a basic surround sound I bought from walmart. I want to connect my HTPC to my surround sound. If I buy this cord here:

RCA Stereo to 3.5mm Jack Plug Adapter 5m 16 Feet Cable

Link deleted by moderator. Links to eBay items are not permitted.

Will it be able to connect to my "audio line out" from my PC to my Surround Sound, and will be able to use my surround sound from my computer then. Please help just want to see if this would work. Also would it be bascially Plug and play like it would automatically start working. Or do I need to edit some settings somewhere to enable this if this cord should work. I know the quality is not going to be near high def. sound but just want to see if it would work. Thanks!

Re: Help with HTCP audio output to surround sound

So long as your receiver has multi channel inputs you can connect up to 7.1 surround sound with a few RCA stereo to 3.5MM jack cables. If your receiver does not have multichannel inputs, you can still use a single cable to connect stereo sound through RCA jacks.

Re: Help with HTCP audio output to surround sound

i would pony up for a pci digital sound card if the receiver has digital inputs. toslink or coax doesn't matter. they are quite inexpensive. you should be able to get a card and a cord for less than 30 bucks all together.

single digital line to your reciever and it will sound much better than the rca's.

i do this with two of my computers now. a laptop that i use as a portable htpc around the house and my girl's house (toslink port already built in laptop). and a desktop with built in digital coax on the mobo.

listen with your own ears...
watch with your own eyes...
make your own decision.

Re: Help with HTCP audio output to surround sound

How does this work with a BR drive, and the hi-rez surround formats? Do I need a new sound card? I do have 5.1 outputs on my computer, but I've never used surround sound with it. Are those sufficient to pass the new audio formats to the analog inputs on my receiver?
