No dates unfortunately, but here's the relevant text from the article:

Quote:
Disney is sending in the troops. The company will release five “platinum” titles from its library in the Blu-ray format over the next two years, hoping that classic animated movies will spur wider interest.

The films are "Pinocchio," "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," "Fantasia," "Fantasia 2000" and "Beauty and the Beast." The company had previously announced plans to introduce one such title, "Sleeping Beauty."

[. . .]

Bob Chapek, president of Disney’s home entertainment unit, said that his company hoped the animated favorites would help it “break past early adopters” to a wider group of consumers.

[. . .]

Mr. Chapek said that "Snow White," last available in 2001, had helped start the market for traditional DVDs. "The power of these titles is incredible," he said.

At Disney, Blu-ray Sales Team Is a Cast of Characters

"Pinocchio" we knew about already, but the others are a nice surprise. And over the next two years to boot!

Provided they're new restorations (apart from the CAPS titles of course), I will be getting all of them. Fantasia 2000 should look stunning in HD.

Re: NYT confirms upcoming Disney Platinum titles coming to Blu-ray

Looking forward to Pinocchio, Snow White, and Beauty and the Beast in stunning HD. One thing I like is that they mentioned a two year window.

Just in time for my son to be old enough to enjoy them.

Looking forward to these.

However, on the discussion of remaining true to the original intent, I wonder this will play out. I mean will there be certain changes or alterations to what it was intended to look like? How is film grain handled on these?

Maybe RAH can chime in.

Just make sure Fantasia is really uncut this time.

I hope if they can't find all of Deems Taylor's narration for the Roadshow version of Fantasia that they also offer the 1990 50th Anniversary print in the package.

This is why some thought Blu would win; The Mouse that ROARED!!!
The 800 lb home video gorilla has just entered the room (HD theater room, that is! ;-) ).

I think "B&TB" off that list will be the BIGGEST improvement over SD!

Movies are: "The Greatest Artform".

My guess on street dates: Pinocchio (Mar '09), Snow White (Sept '09), Fantasia and Fantasia 2000 (Mar '10), and Beauty & the Beast (Sept '10).

As to the film grain I think RAH said something about how a case could be made that the original medium is the artwork that is filmed which wouldn't have film grain. I'm pretty sure all these will be DNR'd probably by Lowry which should at least keep the details.

Very worried about Pinocchio.

Will it be that version released on Region 2 DVDs a few years ago, wiped clean of every brush stroke?

Very worried.

The problem with that is that the artwork was only intended for photography, not display by itself.

Thought I remember from the SD Days that "THoND" R2 was clearer (less artifacts) than the R1. Guess its a title by title basis?

Maybe the popularity of these titles will convince Disney to reopen their traditional animation studio? Didn't think so...

I don't believe that it was Mr. Harris that said that.

From what I understand they are already doing this. One of the first things John Lasseter did when he took over the creative reins at Disney was to close down Disney's in house digital animation unit and restart the traditional animation department.

From what I understand, the Goofy short "How to Hook Up Your Home Theater" was the first film to come out of the new traditional animation unit. And if that is in fact the case then in my opinion they are off to a great start.

Haven't seen it. It's a shame they removed it from the beginning of the National Treasure: Book of Secrets BD. Would have liked to have seen it.

Re: NYT confirms upcoming Disney Platinum titles coming to Blu-ray

While these films are not really of interest to me, I still came in this thread because I think this is great news for BD & home theater enthusiasts.

Hopefully just the tip of the iceberg for not only all sorts of Disney films, but for the other studios to get busy with some of their classics too.

I cannot get enough BD. It's really exciting to see it taking off.

Re: NYT confirms upcoming Disney Platinum titles coming to Blu-ray

If Fantasia does not have the option to hear Deems Taylor's voice (besides the lost audio parts) or the uncut Pastoral segment, it's going to be difficult to want this. Fantasia is on my top list of BluRays I'd like, but it needs to be the original uncut version for real. Slap a disclaimer on it, have branching, etc. Just don't put "Original and Uncut" on the cover while re-dubbing Taylor, cutting out footage, and cropping shots. It was dishonest in 2000, it'll be dishonest in 2009/2010.

Tell The Weinstein Company to release Richard Williams' animated masterpiece The Thief and the Cobbler on DVD in Panavision widescreen and uncut! See and hear what you're missing from their Bitsy Award winner of Worst Standard Edition DVD of 2006 on YouTube!

Thanks, I did a web search and already found it. Don't have Itunes. Not going to install it. I probablly won't see it until it shows up on some BD animation compilation. It's only a matter of time.

I'd be perfectly happy if they reinstated the "offending" scenes by way of seamless branching; that way, we keep the PC forces happy, and the footage is still available for those who want to see it.

Didn't Disney also intimate that Pixar's FINDING NEMO is slated for a 2009 release on Blu-ray? Or is that just wishful thinking on my part?

Yes. The Digital Bits reported that it was delayed from this year.

Re: NYT confirms upcoming Disney Platinum titles coming to Blu-ray

Of those titles, I'm most looking forward to 'Beauty and The Beast'.....absolutely love that film. To have it on Blu-ray with a dramatic image improvement would make me very happy. Hopefully this Platinum edition will have everything that the Platinum DVD had.
Recently watched- BSG: Season 4.0[BD], Starship Troopers 3: Marauder[BD], The Happening[BD], Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen (IMAX)[BD], An American Werewolf In London[BD]

Currently watching- Heroes: Season 1[BD], Michael Palin: Pole To Pole, Battlestar Galactica[BD], Magnum P.I.: Season 7

It should be improved dramatically indeed. The colors were all wrong in the dvd, I hope they fix that for the Blu-Ray.
And of course Fantasia needs to be uncut, that goes without saying.
