Wasn't one of the driving factors behind the special editions was restoring the film that was detoriating? And my impression of that is that the original versions don't really exist anymore in any way to make an anamorphic release.

No thanks, the next time I buy any of the SW film's it will be on BD.

Which, knowing Lucas and the way he uses chess mentality with his releases, will be in a few years probably.

Exactly. And to be perfectly honest, we were told we were never going to get the OUT on DVD in the first place. Either way, I own it, legitimately, and it looks better than my laserdisc and is a hell of a lot more convenient to watch.

Sure, it aint anamorphic, and yes, that sucks, but its better than nothing, especially when we were told we were getting nothing.

There are well preserved prints in private collections. (Library of Congress, British Film Institute, etc.) There are probably others.

They could have re-done the master to anamorphic. Now it wouldn't be anywhere near as good as a genuine new master but it would be a good convinience for 16:9 tvs with poor zooms. And in any case, they didn't make the subs for the alien dialogue 16:9 friendly.

If bootleggers can put out 16:9 versions, surely Lucasfilm could have found a way.

I'll assume you also mean that comment for the bootleg copies with the high quality "dialogue-through-all-speakers-all-the-time" DTS 5.1 tracks that the bootlegs have as well?

Sure, they should have made the subtitles in a safe zone for 16:9 sets. I aint saying the discs are perfect (far from it), but I'm just happy to have legit copies at all to be perfectly honest.

To be honest, now that I have Star Wars Revisited, I doubt I will watch the original DVD's much anyway.

I'll watch Revisited, and I'll watch Star Wars (no episode title) 1977.

I ran my non-anamorphic trilogy DVDs through a program that cropped the movies to 16:9, while preserving all menus and the subtitles are in the correct positions now.

No image quality improvements, and no, they don't look worse because of the cropping either. They look the same, just enhanced for 16:9 TVs.

I don't understand how this works with regard to the subtitles. The subtitles on the "original original" trilogy DVDs are burned into the image itself, as opposed to encoded using "soft" DVD subtitles, aren't they? That being the case, how does your program know what part of the image represents the subtitles, and where/how to reposition them?

Star Wars Revisited was interesting to watch, and I have a lot of respect for the guy who put it together, but to me it's not much more than just another Star Wars Special Edition, albeit with some of the more irritating parts removed.

I amazed at the way he removed that ronto walking across the screen- very skillfully done.

Lucas should be smart and close the barn door before the horses get out, this time. A lot of people believe that the '06 DVDs were released in large part to cut down on all the bootlegging, but it was really too late. Many people I know of didn't buy the '06 discs simply because they already had satisfactory bootlegs, and they didn't want to give Lucas money for sub-par transfers.

I know that there are people who have acquired 35mm prints of the OT films (pre-SE) and are working on finding ways to do hi-def scans. Once that's done and they're 'out there' it's going to steal a bit of Lucas' thunder if he ever decides to release the orig. theatrical versions on blu-ray. It's just a matter of time- it's gone way beyond the X0 project and other laserdisc rips now. When you don't give people what they want, they'll find a way to get it themselves.

And BTW I am in no way endorsing bootlegging, I'm just saying that I know it's going on.

No, they're not burned in.

If the various versions of Close Encounters can be restored, there's no reason Star Wars couldn't.

What's the difference between doing that, and pressing the 'zoom' button on your DVD player's remote?

The subtitles on the disc aren't formatted for 16x9 tvs.

Re: ANOTHER Star Wars Trilogy (Trilogies?) DVD release on 11/04/08...

Who would zoom in using a DVD player? DVD player zooming is not only terrible, but often has that 4x, 6x, printed on the screen at all times depending on the player.

Using a zoom mode on a widescreen TV yields better results but would crop the subtitles.

I thought the zoom functions on most good DVD players were preferable to the zoom functions on TVs.

If that's the case with your player, it must be a damn good (as in expensive) DVD player!

To be clear, I'm not talking about the setup menu aspect ratio setting a DVD player has, like "16:9 shrink" , "16:9 zoom" and so on, I mean the simple zoom button on a DVD remote.

At the same time, on my DVD player using that 16:9 zoom setting makes 4:3 DVDs look a bit poor.

My television's stretch and zoom modes don't make DVDs look pixellated, so quality remains much nicer than the DVD player would.

That has always been the way it is with my equipment. I used to use a Sony upconverting player that zoomed pretty well, and kept the subtitles in the proper place. However, in the corner of the screen was an annoying "2x" graphic. People complained to Sony about it, hoping for a firmware update, but an update never materialized.

I usually use the TVs "expand" button to fill up the screen with a non-anamorphic DVD, but then the subtitles drop too low and become largely unreadable. So, when I watch the OOT, I usually un-expand the picture and watch it in a box for scenes like "Greedo doesn't shoot". Alternatives are buying another player, buying another set, watching the laserdisc-sourced DVD-Rs or using Nicholas' solution to make the current discs anamorphic. IMO, Nicholas's solution is best for me.

This is why I always recommend Oppo players to my friends. Not only do they play any region discs and upconvert really well but they have many zoom features without any annoying graphics on screen.

The sound isn't quite as good as the LDs great PCM sdtk. But the DVDs' picture is much better than what my LD player is capable of displaying. I'm sure there are some fan-edits in the works that combine the "superior" DVD PQ (such as it is) with the superior LD sound.

So the 192kbps ac3 compression is what makes the Dolby track of the DVD inferior, or is it a different, more dynamic mix on the Laserdisc PCM?

They're the exact same mixes, so I guess it's the DD compression.
