ANOTHER Star Wars Trilogy (Trilogies?) DVD release on 11/04/08...

Star Wars Trilogy (Original Trilogy):
DVD Empire - Item - Star Wars Trilogy / DVD-Video

Prequel Trilogy:
DVD Empire - Item - Star Wars Prequel Trilogy / DVD-Video

My heart skipped a beat when I first saw the OT set, as each film is 2-discs, but chances are the #2 discs are still non-anamorphic versions of the original films- just the "limited edition" '06 discs repackaged.

Does the greed of Lucas know no bounds?

I will purchase exactly one more version of these films - the giant DVD box set that was suppossed to come out for the anniversary. When and if that comes out - I'll buy it.

It must know SOME bounds or we would have seen at least ONE release of Howard the Duck and/or The Star Wars Holiday Special by now.

You're more forgiving than I am: The only special feature that could prompt me to rebuy these movies yet again would be re-mastered Anamorphic copies of the original, unaltered trilogy.

Ah, who the hell am I kidding? I'm totally George Lucas's bitch. What is thy bidding, my master?

They're just repackagings so I don't see any reason to get bent out of shape. Of course since it's a Star Wars thread, there will be lots of whiny posts reiterating points made a million times before.

I think that "anniversary set" was never really planned in the first place - just the figment of a fanboy's imagination.

I already purchased the '06 "limited edition" releases (as well as the '04 boxed set), so I won't be purchasing this set, assuming that it is indeed just a re-packaging. I never bought any of the Prequel films.

I'll be very happy to part with some more cash when the '77, '80 and '83 versions of the OT are released in an improved format (preferably blu-ray, but at the very LEAST anamorphic DVD) but who knows if that will ever happen.

Huh, maybe this is it. I mean really, how many old laserdisc-era repackages are still coming out in almost-2009? If it has a new transfer of the theatrical versions from 77-83 I would totally buy it.

The 30th Anniversary release was definitely planned. I noticed on an order form at work (a video store in Australia) that it was listed as "cancelled" on a Network Video (major buying group) order form.

Re: ANOTHER Star Wars Trilogy (Trilogies?) DVD release on 11/04/08...

A shame that the 2004 bonus disc and its content seem to have been forgotten. Same goes for the original making of- documentaries from '77, '80, '83, '84.

Can't say I care much for the packaging. But hey, this is more about keeping fresh product on the shelves (for first time buyers) than quadruple-dipping (although it is the first time the prequels are packaged together).

I don't have time enough to watch all these DVDs!

I wonder if this release is being timed with the DVD release of the Star Wars: The Clone Wars movie that's currently in theaters. Seems likely.

I think this is exactly it. Throw this out one more time (similar to Indiana Jones getting a second boxset for the new movie), then do the ULTIMATE set or whatever it is if those 3D versions of the Trilogy ever happen. Or was that a rumor too?

What's the big deal? It's just the same DVDs you already have. This is clearly intended for those three or so people who still haven't bought them yet. Relax.

Four people. I don't have any of the Star Wars movies in any format. I will await the BD release but I will only buy the BD release if it includes a copy of the theatrical cut for the "first" trilogy. Otherwise, I'll rent.

I'd guess there will be no changes, but it's only a guess. It's best to just look at it as a repackaging unless and until we hear different.

What a rebel!
The Bits says no new content, so I guess that's that. It will be funny to see the Star Wars section of the stores, just to see how much space the same exact thing can take up.

True, true, true.
Third time is a charm?!?!?! :-0

I say this is the last ditch 'effort' (or maybe ripoff) for SD DVD.
Next is Blu!
I'll wait for the BD.

I think I read something where Lucas said that the technology wasn't quite "there" yet.

Re: ANOTHER Star Wars Trilogy (Trilogies?) DVD release on 11/04/08...

The ONLY thing notable here is that this is the first time Episodes 1-3 have been released together in a boxed set.

Wait, is that actually notable?

Wow, that's almost a legitimate reason to buy them (according to George, at least). But who has been waiting since Ep. 1 hit dvd to buy them all in a cardboard box? I'd honestly don't know.
Anyway, I'm going to wait for the BD superbox that Lucas was talking about (remember? It wasn't supposed to come out on dvd in the first place) and (I never thought I would say this) I'm waiting for more revisions on the films, actually. The lightsabers looked wrong in a lot of shots in Empire and Jedi, and some continuity errors still need to be fixed (Cloud City is a very good example). I don't want to go into the whole 'Han shoots first' debate again, but I read something interesting in the Making Of Star Wars book by J.W. Rinzler. It said there that the original scene with Greedo was reshot, when the Jabba scene was deleted from the movie. The Jabba scene had a lot of expository dialogue, that had to be fitted somewhere else. The Greedo scene was reshot, with the information added. In the Special Editions, the Jabba scene was put back in. Wouldn't it make more sense to put the original Greedo scene back in, so you don't have two different characters saying the exact same thing? Just curious.
Of course, the best thing to do is to leave the Greedo scene as it was (while Han still shoots first) and just delete the Jabba scene, but it is interesting

Re: ANOTHER Star Wars Trilogy (Trilogies?) DVD release on 11/04/08...

You would think with all the inevitable publicity for the upcoming TV shows Lucas would just want to take this well-worn subject off the table (and make a few bucks in the process. I wonder how close we are to something weird like Lucas striking a deal with Wal-Mart to be the exclusive home of the restored original trilogy, like the thing The Eagles did.)

Make that seven, although I do own the '97 Special Editions as well as The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones on VHS. I had the original versions of the OT taped off one of the premium channels in the '80s (don't recall which one), but they got accidently taped over somehow.

While I did rent the 2004 DVD release and Episodes I-III, I've been passing on purchasing anything Star Wars-related put out on DVD (and will be in the future) until an anamorphic treatment and a non-laserdisc transfer is given to the original theatrical cuts for Episodes IV-VI.

In the meantime, I've had the non-anamorphic versions saved in my Netflix Queue.

Disney/Buena Vista/Miramax: Please put Beautiful Girls on Blu-ray with bonus features and the original theatrical trailer in 1080p, and an anamorphic re-release with bonus features and the original theatrical trailer day-and-date on DVD. Thanks!

Eh, doesn't really matter to me. Think of it like working in an office with Jabba the Big Boss and Greedo as a middle management type. If you had to answer to both of them, you'd have to hear from both of them about how you screwed up.

And on a side note, we have to stop refering to it as "Han Shoots First" because originally, he was the only one who shot.

Re: ANOTHER Star Wars Trilogy (Trilogies?) DVD release on 11/04/08...

It's too late for that. Lucasfilm "borrowed" the phrase, and slapped it on a t-shirt. George was seen wearing one on the Indy 4 set. Talk about rubbing it in!
