Re: Smallville: Buy Now Or Wait
There are so many quality shows to check out on DVD that you've probably missed (unless you're a voracious TV viewer--I am, but there're still a few HBO & F/X dramas I haven't seen yet, plus Weeds on Showtime and way too many potentially great network shows to name). I would say, rent or blind-buy some of those to get into and get through first, unless you really need to own Smallville now.
I like to go through my favorite shows on DVD again too, but I try to wait a bit from the time the seasons or entire show ended (and yeah, I guess it's been a long while since the early Smallville seasons) to when I watch them again. There's so much out there to enjoy, and that's not counting all the other forms of entertainment vying for your attention aside from TV.
If you can wait, I'd say maybe a Complete Smallville Series set on Blu-Ray will be in the pipeline in a couple years (assuming Blu-Ray continues to succeed and lasts). I figure if Season 8 is the end, they'll have the DVDs for it out by December 2009 at the latest, maybe a Complete DVD set to go along with that, and maybe have it complete on Blu-Ray by late 2010.
Are there any "complete series" Blu-Ray releases yet ? If not, someone's gonna need to break the ice on that the way Fox did with The X-Files and HBO with Sex & The City being the first seasons of TV-on-DVD (the animated HBO Spawn series might've been out around the same time too back in 2000, I forget). Of course, it's more of a sure thing nowadays, less of a risk, unless they aren't able to get fans to bite because most of those fans already own it all on DVD and aren't willing to pay again (this is why I'm waiting for a lot of shows--in case the Blu-Ray releases absolutely rock).
Edited to add: I was just reading about TV seasons on Blu Ray in the BCI thread and one of BCI's guys said that only Lost and Weeds have done well on Blu-Ray, everything else has done poorly so far. So if most seasons haven't been selling well in the format so far, maybe I shouldn't be so optimistic about seeing complete show collections yet.
