Crawdaddy

Now it's up to $44.99. I had it in my cart and didn't finish the order.

I jumped.......and got it. Sort of a hollow victory since now there's some chatter on other sites that this is coming soon to BD.

If a BD version doesn't get announced before the DVD set comes out then I have a bit of a dilemma.

Jim K --

Would it be possible for you to share the addresses of the sites where you have seen this chatter?

Thank you.

Here you go. Post #4962 hints at it. Post #5002 confirms it.

"Club Penton" - Ask questions to Hollywood insider "Penton-Man" - Page 249 - Blu-ray Forum

The only question is when. Could be this year, next or the year after.

FYI - I'm pretty sure he works for Sony in some capacity.

Thank you.

I'll confess; I had a hard time jumping into that thread and trying to make sense of some of the posts. For now, I'll be happy enough to finally get these films on SD (I've certainly waited long enough). If they do ultimately come out on BD, then I'll double-dip, without hesitation.

Yeah you have to read between the lines a bit as he tends to be overly coy to the point of being annoying with the guessing games. That said his leaks are pretty reliable which is why I occasionally scan that thread.

Like you I've been waiting years for these films but I'll be kicking myself if it gets released on BD 6 months after I buy the DVD set - hence the dilemma.

Interesting, but I'm still going to get this boxset because it maybe two years from now before we get the Blu-ray release.

Re: BOETTICHER/SCOTT SET

When Grover Crisp talked about this set, and showed a clip from the HD master of one of the films, at HME in June 2008, I do not recall any discussion about release on Blu-ray, although it was unclear to me whether the set was being released on SD-DVD or Blu-Ray. I suspect that if a Blu-Ray set has not been announced already, it will not be forthcoming anytime in the near future. Unless a Blu-Ray edition is announced by the release date of the SD-DVD, I will definitely be picking up this set on SD-DVD. These are great films.

Re: BOETTICHER/SCOTT SET

I have an important clarification for all of you...

This box set, called The Films of Budd Boetticher, is not coming
out on Blu-ray. It is a regular DVD release only, and the first of
what Sony hopes will be a lot of releases in collaboration with the
Film Foundation, under the umbrella title of The Collector's Choice. Sony
has designed these with the true film fan in mind. Also, the design
of the packaging in no way resembles the Martini Movies. So, there
no need to wait thinking six months later it will be re-released on BD.
Not in the cards.

Never? Ever?

I suppose that makes this a safe buy now though the news is quite bittersweet (more on the bitter side).

I hope they (Sony) are being completely forthcoming with you Ron.

Interesting artwork! I'm surprised at how much they played down Randolph Scott's part in these films without a single mention of his name on the front of the box.

What is this series The Collector's Choice ?
Are any other sets planned for this series ?

Not much of a fan of the colourised photo.

I think that's a Mitchell camera with a Bausch & Lomb Type I CinemaScope lens on the front.

That design would look better suited for some Spike Jonze compilation, or a better word to describe it: YECH!

That box is truly horrible looking; is that the best these bozos could come up with??

Re: BOETTICHER/SCOTT SET

It looks similar to their Frank Capra and Stanley Kramer boxes. Doesn't make it good though. I'm surprised they didn't mention Randolph Scott. He has to be more familiar to the public than Budd Boetticher. Though, these days, not by much.

I am very dispointed in the cover art. I could have been so much better.

All that original cover art is great. Even if they did use a modern design on the outside box, it would've been nice if they reproduced that art for the actual DVD covers.
Having said that, look at Warner's recent Westerns box; there seems to be an idea that cover art has to look new. Same deal for Fox's more recent westerns.

Very good point.

They should've called it the "Randolph Scott & Budd Boetticher Westerns Collection".

Re: BOETTICHER/SCOTT SET

Even calling it The Westerns of Budd Boetticher would be more descriptive, and might actually cause casual Western fans to pick the box up off the store shelf for a look. Right now, there's very little on the packaging that points out that this is a series of important Westerns.

Re: BOETTICHER/SCOTT SET

A great looking set of posters. New film posters are so boring now, it seems like a lost art. It looks like Sony aren't that good at cover art. You could say these sets are for collectors who know what they want, but any one of those great old posters on the box would have reeled in a few more customers.

Actually, it strikes me as more reminiscent of Warner's Peckinpah set. The picture of Boetticher at the camera is almost identical to the one of Peckinpah.

Except with no sense of design aesthetic or understanding of the films included in the box. The ridiculous lens flares, the photoshopped movie stills with faux-style overexposure, sleek and sterile fonts & colors and frivolous cluttering of unrelated names boasting... introductions? huh, who cares? Clearly whoever was hired to design this package should stick to webpages and stay as far away from classic movies.

Yeah, it has that "let's bleach everything one colour" thing going on with the blue.

Oh, and the Futura font, so it is like the credits of a Wes Anderson or late Stanley Kubrick film.

At the very least it should've said WESTERNS somewhere on there.

I'd say this is better than the Martini Movies cover art, but it would've been better if they adapted some original cover art. Do they really think they are going to 'fool' a few customers into thinking these films were made in the last 10 years?

Can anybody tell me if that Boetticher documentary that Turner Classic Movies showed last year is available on dvd? The name of the documentary is “A Man Can Do It”.

Other than in this set do you mean Robert? I don't think it's available separately.
