Of course they did. The mystical attributes claimed for the crystal skulls come from New Age writers, not from 50s Russian psychic research. How many 50s scifi movies can you name dealing with either subject? If Lucas really wanted to stay with a 50s theme, the New Age mumbo jumbo doesn't belong.

Frankly I had no idea what the Lost Ark was before I saw Raiders, so the fact that it was some ancient artifact who's existence at all is highly questionable, was completely irrelevant to me.

Like wise I didn't know what Shankara Stones were before I saw Doom. I surely didn't know they glowed when brought together. Of course Lucas made that up.

I knew what the Holy Grail was, but had no idea it had the power to extend life, which of course is another invention of Lucas'.

Honestly I couldn't care less if they skulls are 100 years old or never existed at all, it has no effect on my enjoyment of the movie. If the story is interesting enough I don't think people care one way or the other what the Mcguffin is.

I'd say you're atypical. As I pointed out, why did Lucas try to make the crystal skull stuff seem more important by attaching it to the Ancient Aztecs if, as you claim, the mcguffin doesn't matter? It's obvious that he knows it DOES matter, and it's obvious that he knows that Jewish, Christian, and Hindu cultural/religious traditions are far more interesting and carry more weight to people (even if they don't know all the particulars) than artifacts made 150 years ago by some hoaxers. That's why he TRIED to make it weightier. It didn't work.

I think he tied it to Aztecs because that is the prevailing myth about them, and also to give it more of an "archeological" feel. I don't think he wanted to totally abandon the formula of Indiana Jones, IE an archeologist crawling around dusty old tombs.

Of course the McGuffin has to SEEM important. The Uranium in Notorious seems important, but its not. Hitchcock was ready to switch it to industrial diamonds when the producer objected to uranium. Its irrelevant other than setting a mood.

All four movies assume that the objects are not hoaxes when it could be argued that all of them are. Again that's not the point.

I thought it worked just fine, and given the box office I would say that I'm probably not atypical.

There is no prevailing myth about Aztecs and crystal skulls. Lucas manufactured a connection to a culture which is KNOWN to be nonexistent (unlike the other films). But Dave is right that this discussion is in the wrong thread.

So this thead about the BD release itself can easily become spoilerific. Some of us have avoided the other thread for that reason. We should be able to check in here to see about the upcoming release without potential spoilers, plot points, mcguffins listed or a rehash of the same old discussions/arguments.

I also agree.....I haven't even seen this film yet and won't be doing so until the BD is out. I don't need to read discussions which could possibly spoil the film for myself and others. Thankfully, I haven't read the above posts so I'm still spoiler-free.

Sorry I didn't think we were talking about anything that wasn't fairly common knowledge from the trailers or the poster.

I was only talking about it because there isn't really much to say about the blu-ray until it comes out.

Most of the discussion is there anyways. Let this thread bump on it's own when there's BD disc info. or for discussion about the release. If this were a 40 year old catalog title it would be one thing but this is still a very new release with a huge, very active thread currently being used in the proper forum and which has been named the OFFICIAL Indy discussion thread.

Well I think I put most of my reference into spoiler boxes. If I failed to do that I apologizes. I honestly thought the skull on the poster pretty much gave the whole thing away.

This is just where the conversation started up so I didn't see any harm in talking about it here. Kinda seems like making people at a party go to a different room if they want to talk about a particular subject. I just didn't see any harm in it.

Not everyone does do spoiler boxes. I certainly didn't see any flying saucers on the poster but now know they have something to do with the film. Having this thread remain about the disc itself helps with things like that. Having the other thread be open to discuss the plot itself helps.
This way people interested in discussing/arguing about the movie itself can have their comments conveniently in one thread and not have to skim two different ones and people interested in details about the disc release itself can look for new info. here. It makes it easier. And makes each thread much less redundant. That's why there are separate forums here.

I can't believe I'm actually saying this about an Indy film coming to DVD, but I think I may actually pass up buying or renting this one it was really that bad.

I LOVED the whole Indy phenomena and I've seen them all, some numerous times, but this one just left a really sour taste that repeat viewings probably never will erase...

So sad to see such an amazing movie serial go down in flames the way this POS did.

Oh how the mighty have fallen.

It's funny, I was just thinking "what the internet really needs is more guys' opinions about sequels."

Does anyone know who is in charge of producing a disc like this, Lucasfilm or Paramount? I'm sure Lucas/Spielberg sign off on things, but what entity actually does the transfer and extras?

Although it's tempting, I think I'm gonna wait for the inevitable Indiana Jones 4-Movie Blu-Ray Collection whenever it gets released. I feel the new movie is certainly fun and entertaining, but I can wait for it.

I can guarantee you a BD boxed set will not come for at least over a year. It will not be released at any other time other than the 4th Qtr. And if they decide they want to do another film, you won't see the release until then probably.

I am going to plan to wait for the box set with the original trilogy to come out. But who knows I may get weak and pick up the new IJ4 one day when I am shopping for other Blu-ray's. I have not seen the new Indiana movie so I am not really dying to buy it like I would be with the original trilogy.

And I think Will is correct that we will not see the original trilogy for at least 1 year and most likely around Christmas time of 09'.

Not real covers but I can not wait!
