Re: Site Wiki

There is a search function in the menu at the top of the page. In the same menu there are also the forum rules, which prohibit the discussion of how to duplicate copyrighted material.

Re: Site Wiki

One may legally keep a digital copy of a CD on their own home computer.

Re: Site Wiki

I'm not going into it. The rules are one thing. What the law says is legal is a separate issue. I'm not a Mod, so if you want to argue it, argue it with one of them.

Re: Site Wiki

What I ultimately want to do is purchase a Slimdevices Squeezebox and rip my CD collection to a music server. I am just looking for a general article that explains the process and the various formats and software that can be used.

I read the "Respect for copyrights" forum rules and I believe I am ok with this question.

Thanks

Re: Site Wiki

Try putting your CD into your computer.

(btw...I'm not arguing, or even disagreeing. the process is simple and obvious, and I have not explained it. I'm do not feel that I am violating site rules in any way.)

Re: Site Wiki

I have a Squeezebox that I've used for over 2 years now. I've discussed my set-up on here before so I don't think it should be an issue. If a moderator wants to delete or edit this post, feel free, and the OP can send me a PM for details.

I rip to FLAC format for use with the Squeezebox and keep an MP3 mirror for our mp3 players. The reason FLAC format is recommended is because 1) it's open and not a proprietary format 2) it'll reduce the file-size from that of the actual CD through lossless compression, and 3) it has the capability of storing tags which is essential for proper use of a Squeezebox.

I use a program called Exact Audio Copy (EAC) to rip my discs, using the FLAC DLL. EAC is highly regarded and considered the most accurate ripping program available. I use a program called MP3Tag to edit all the tags (some tags can be inserted into files in EAC from a CDDB lookup, but other can't). I use DBPowerAmp (not free) to make my MP3 mirror.

The HydrogenAudio.org forum and Wiki is a great resource for the exact steps and commandline parameters required to use FLAC with EAC. The Slimdevices forum is also a great resource for getting your questions answered.

Thanks Nolesrule:

Re: Site Wiki

Tags are used for Artist, Album, Title, Genre, Disc #, Track #, Track Name (and many more). for sorting and searching purposes.

The SlimDevices Wiki has information about which tags are supported by SqueezeCenter (the Squeezebox software). The Wiki there is really the best source for all-around use of the device.

In fact, the SqueezeCenter software is a free download, so you can set everything up and try it out before you even buy the Squeezebox with SoftSqueeze (a Squeezebox emulator that comes with SqueezeCenter). I did that for a good 2-3 months before I bought my Squeezebox.

Here are the Wiki Guides to help you get started....

And glad I could help. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Re: Site Wiki

FLAC seems to be the format of choice, curious, are there any other competitors to FLAC? Would comercial software have their own version of lossless?

Have you ever compared the squeezebox to Apple's Airport express?

Can I use DBPowerAmp for ripping or is EAC better?

Thank for the detailed replies,

Bob

Re: Site Wiki

Yes, you can use DBPowerAmp for ripping, and it works with FLAC. It's easier. But EAC is better...although some (and perhaps most) might not notice a difference.

There are alternatives to FLAC, but they are all proprietary, which means if the company goes under or they decide not to support the format anymore, you could be SOL. Josh Coalson, the developer of FLAC, maintains a presence on the Slimdevices forums. In addition, because it is an open format, if he stops supporting it, someone else can step up to the plate to maintain it.

Don't use commercial just because it is commercial. Commercial doesn't automatically make it a better product in the software world. The free software tends to be better than it's commercial equivalent when it comes to what we're talking about here.

As for Airport, I would not recommend other commercial products over a Squeezebox, mainly because the software that serves up the audio is free, open source and can be used with much more than the Squeezebox...it even supports live streaming to media players, although those won't have the fine controls of an application or product designed to use the software, but you can control the stream using the squeezeCenter's web interface.

Re: Site Wiki

Got it thanks.

Do you think the features of the Squeezebox will some day be wrapped up inside of a receiver or is that a while off?

Thanks for the link to their wiki and forum. I understand this process much better.

Do you have the new duet or version 3 fo the SB?

Thanks Bob

Re: Site Wiki

Where do I start?

First of all, I'm still waiting for someone to provide me with actual legal authority for some of the propositions that people are so quick to pronounce on the internet -- in this thread, that would be "One may legally keep a digital copy of a CD on their own home computer". I mean, maybe it's true, but if so, someone should be able to show me a statute or a case that says so.

But second, this thread isn't asking about that. It's asking about ripping CDs to a music server, which is a different proposition. Anyone have any legal authority on that one they'd care to share?

Third, for those of you who "feel" you're "ok" with the HTF Rules in this discussion, I'm sorry to disappoint you, but you're wrong. The Rules are broader than the law, and that's by design. We err on the side of caution. We would rather prohibit discussions that might be legitimate than allow some that might not be. So when it says in HTF Rule 5 that we
Quote:
do not allow discussion of . . . how to make unauthorized copies of video or audio materials
the word "unauthorized" should be read very broadly. It means that, if you can't show us chapter and verse of how the copying you want to discuss is legitimate, you might as well skip the discussion. And "discussion" means any conversation of any kind, not just explaining how to do it.

Thread closed.
