Re: Star Trek TOS Season 3- Remastered coming in November

Yes, I did say that. The report I read from trekmovie.com did say that The Cage Remastered is included in the Third Season Remastered Set. What is not clear, is if there will be the two versions included in the last 3rd Season Box set, the all color version and black and white/color version. I bet they only include the remastered version. I agree, it will be cool to see that opening shot remastered and full size when the camera pushes into the top of the Enterprise and through the dome! That was quite an achievement to blend into the live action.

The extras have not been specified yet, as far as I know from the sources that I look to. What's likely to be included are the extras that were on the last season box set ported over. These include the featurettes: "To Boldly Go....Season Three, Life Beyond Trek: Walter Keonig, Chief Engineer's Log, Memoir from Mr. Sulu, Star Trek's impact, A Star Trek Collector's Dream Come True and Production Art.

And based on the last 2 sets, they'll include Billy Blackburn's home movies from the set of Star Trek, I am eager to see that. And has been done with the other sets, there will be what they call Collectable Data Cards which says what's on each disc. And I almost forget, the trailers for each episode.

Re: Star Trek TOS Season 3- Remastered coming in November

I finally found a review and more details of the Third Season Remastered DVD set. It can be read at trekweb.com.

A few surprises are mentioned. First, the thing that I am really interested in is seeing The Cage. The reviewer, whose name sounds like a member here, states that the new remastered version of The Cage really grew on him. He likes how the new effects really enhanced that show quite well. I'm really curious how they delt with that awkward section when they go to warp and they dissolve with a double exposure of the bridge with stars flying by. And I want to see if they fixed the audio error that shows up in The Menagerie when Spock and Pike touch the singing plant, the music does not stop as it originally had.

Most of the extras on the last SD box set are ported over. 2 of the 3 new extras sound really good. One is for Bob Justman, one of the heros of Star Trek. The other is the Billy Blackburn home movies on the Star Trek set. Those have been terrific. And the third is about Star Trek collectables and the collectors, including a segment with Rod Roddenberry whose company sells replica props that was a Best Buy bonus disc.

Here's what is missing from the last set quoted from the review: "production sketches from Walter M. Jefferies, the text commentaries from Mike and Denise Okuda, and the collection of hidden "Red Shirt Logs", which were not ported from the previous DVD set for this new release..... The 1988 video release of "The Cage" (it would have been nice to have all three commercially released versions available on DVD for comparison, a la the "Blade Runner" DVD set)"

And he goes on about missing stuff that's never been included like the bloopers and some other videos on Herb Solow and Robert Justman's Star Trek: The Real Story and Shatner's Star Trek Memories.

MSRP is $100.00 according his review, which means about $60 street price. Street date is still November 18th. This is a set I'll pick-up to complete the collection. But of course, for those waiting for the Blu Ray, this is probably not for you!

Here's the full review: TrekWeb.com - DVD Review : Star Trek The Original Series Season 3 Remastered

edit: some updating, MSRP is $84.98 and Amazon lists this set for $66.99. From the latest info I could find, the season is spread out on 6 discs with a 7th for the extras.

I keep swearing this will be the last time I ever buy an incarnation of TOS.

We'll see.

Re: Star Trek TOS Season 3- Remastered coming in November

Incidentally, the Deep Discount DVD sale has started and runs through November 23 and is 25% this year, so this would be the perfect product to order for maximum savings.

You will have to wait until the actual release date of November 18, though, since the sale does not apply to pre-orders, but the sale will still be on.

Codes that have been good in the past include:
SUPERSALE
USATODAY
NYTIMES
PRICESEARCH

I will be ordering the "Firefly" series blu-ray when it comes out next week, November 11.

We will need all the home entertainment we can get in this economy.

Thanks for the heads up Greg. The reviewer discussed the extended version of The Cage. I never heard it referred to like that. He describes it as the version prior to discovery of the full color version and is the print made from black and white clips from Roddenberry's personal copy and color clips from The Menagerie.

Re: Star Trek TOS Season 3- Remastered coming in November

I just went through a review at trekmovie of Star Trek Season 3 Remastered standard def DVD out today.

One of the things that surprised me was that in Paradise Syndrome, the syndicated remastered broadcast version had the beam the wrong color that emits from the obelisk. It was blue originally, but red on the broadcast version. They heard us fans and fixed it back to blue!

The Cage is what I really want to see with a new title sequence and CGI effects of course.

Re: Star Trek TOS Season 3- Remastered coming in November

Has anyone picked this up at a Best Buy B&M store? On their website (bestbuy.com/startrek), it is being listed for $39.99 (or all three seasons for $99). The Sunday ad has it listed at $59.99.

Does anyone know if the $39.99 price is only on the website?

Re: Star Trek TOS Season 3- Remastered coming in November

JohnWells, I'm afraid I was all wishy washy. I asked for this for my birthday and someone said Amazon shipped it to me two days ago. Guess I couldn't wait.

For me, TOS, in just about any form, is the Holy Grail.

I posted this somewhere else, but it bears repeating.

In the 1970s I recorded TOS off TV with an audio cassette recorder.
In the 1980s I recorded every episode off TV on VHS,
In the late 1980s and early 90s I collected the pricey Paramount VHS tapes (all of them and threw a fit at CITY being altered).
In the late 1990s (?) I bought a set of VCDs of the 40 disc set off eBay because I couldn't afford to pay $600.
In 2001 (?) I bought the 40 disc DVD set'
In 2004 I bought the season sets for the extras and a couple of sound corrections
In 2008 I am buying TOS-R.

It will never end. I have admitted it, now, finally.

Re: Star Trek TOS Season 3- Remastered coming in November

I picked up the Third Season Remastered at Best Buy for $39.99. They did the price match as that was the price on their own website. If I hadn't, it would have been $59.99.

David, me too. Recorded the audio, bought the VHS, laserdiscs and all DVD iterations. TOS is the only show I'll do that for. And then blu-ray....

Why would I break my streak?

I'll start calling him Admiral Nelson...and he is an Admiral, you know...we just have to somehow get him out from behind the desk and assign him a starship...

Carabimero,

Just don't call him a 'chair bound paper-pusher.' Worse yet, you could refer to Nelson as a 'Poppin' J. Ambassador.' I may just call him 'Admiral.'

BTW, doesn't this mean that Lou should get a title? Perhaps a Fleet Admiral? Somehow, 'Ensign Sytsma' just doesn't have the same ring to it. Neither does Commodore Lou 'Stocker,' or Commodore 'Locker.' It sounds as though he would have to be scrubbing the transporter pad manually.

Re: Star Trek TOS Season 3- Remastered coming in November

Let me ask you guys how you feel about these so-called collector cards with the disc info on them. Fortunately there's a slot in my ST DVD wallet for them, but man, if there weren't, given those wonky cases and the way those cards are so slippery, man...in my opinion Paramout wins the award for consistently hard to use inconvenient ST packaging...

Nelson,

Do you think these are the actual blooper reels? I own them all, but I'd love an upgrade of those.

Re: Star Trek TOS Season 3- Remastered coming in November

Scott, the quote you quoted was from an early reviewer who hoped that the set included the real blooper reels. I have not opened my set yet, but I'm pretty sure there is no blooper reel included. Oh well. I don't have a decent copy myself, just an old VHS.

David, those collector cards are okay. I don't have a real problem with them. The only change I'd make is if the cards were a booklet instead, so it's all together. I have to refer to them to know what is on what disc.
