50th ANNIVERSARY EDITION
Also Debuts October 7 on DVD and Blu-ray™ High-Def Loaded with New Bonus Features

CULVER CITY, CALIF. (July 29, 2008) – Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release some of the most popular film classics from stop-motion animation genius Ray Harryhausen in a Ray Harryhausen Collectible DVD Gift Set and a The 7th Voyage of Sinbad: 50th Anniversary Edition DVD on October 7, just in time for holiday gift-giving. The six-disc DVD boxed gift set features two-disc special editions of It Came From Beneath the Sea, Earth vs. The Flying Saucers, and 20 Million Miles to Earth: 50th Anniversary Edition. Each film is available in a brilliant colorized version, in addition to the pristine, digitally-restored black & white original version, and viewers are able to toggle between the two as they please. Also included in the gift set is a collectible Ymir figurine based on Ray Harryhausen’s original 1957 hand-crafted design and signed by Ray Harryhausen himself. The Ray Harryhausen Collectible DVD Gift Set will sell for $80.95 SRP.

The collection is also being released day and date, in a Blu-ray™ High-Definition Disc four-pack including It Came From Beneath the Sea, Earth vs. The Flying Saucers, 20 Million Miles to Earth: 50th Anniversary Edition, and The 7th Voyage of Sinbad: 50th Anniversary Edition in bold bright color for $107.95 SRP.

With the cutting-edge high-definition colorization technology developed and patented by industry leader Legend Films, Harryhausen has been able to visually recreate his black and white films. Harryhausen said, “I am thrilled these films are finally being seen in color. I had wanted to do them in color in the 1950s, but the budgets were not large enough to accommodate that luxury. Now, thanks to the marvelous advances made in the colorization process by San Diego’s Legend Films and others, audiences will be able to see the movies as I originally intended.”

The 7th Voyage of Sinbad: 50th Anniversary Edition, also available on October 7, arrives on a single-disc DVD and Blu-ray™ High-Def disc, both loaded with special features including audio commentary by Ray Harryhausen, visual effects experts Phil Tippett and Randall William Cook, author Steven Smith and producer Arnold Kunert; a documentary; six featurettes, and more. The 7th Voyage of Sinbad: 50th Anniversary Edition will sell for $19.94 SRP, while the Blu-ray™ High-Def release will sell for $28.95 SRP.

Though special effects techniques today have been dramatically transformed by CGI, Ray Harryhausen’s highly imaginative and incredibly detailed work continues to hold audiences spellbound. A disciple of stop-motion pioneer Willis O’Brien (King Kong), Harryhausen adapted O’Brien’s techniques. Harryhausen developed and created his own genre of film from the 1950s to the 1980s utilizing this stop-motion process (eventually identified as “Dynamation”). His memorable films include The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (1953), It Came from Beneath the Sea (1955), The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958), Jason and the Argonauts (1963), One Million Years, B.C. (1966), The Valley of Gwangi (1969), The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1974), and Clash of the Titans (1981). Harryhausen’s amazing body of work continues to inspire many of today’s special effects wizards.

Re: SPHE Press Release: Ray Harryhausen Collectible DVD Gift Set (DVD/Blu-ray)

This movie set sounds really great. I grew up a big fan of his work. Glad to see him get the "royal" treatment.

Quote:

I am glad he said this. It will be interesting to see how those who despise colorization feel. On the one hand, it is not the original format, but on the other, it is the way the creator wanted to do it. At least both versions are included. I like the idea that you will be able to switch back ond forth on the fly.

Great news, particularly about 7th Voyage!

One thing I'm not clear about...does the Blu-ray set also contain the Ymir figure?

Any word yet on individual releases for It Came From Beneath the Sea and Earth vs. the Flying Saucers?

I'm pretty irked that Sony is forcing me to buy 20 Million Miles to Earth again if I want the two above.

I simply wont buy it. At some point they will have to break it up, even if they have no plans to do so now. I am sure they will lose a big chunk of the market with guys that have no intent to rebuy it again. Its a double dip from DVD as it is!

I'm not buying this either. Its a real kick in the eye to Harryhausen enthusiasts. Surely everyone in the market for this has probably bought the stand alone disc of "20 Million Miles..." already - you're being penalized for early purchase!

Offer stand-alone releases or some kind of rebate for the folks who bought 20M. Otherwise you can keep your "Collectible DVD Gift Set."

I'll just sell one of my copies of 20 Million Miles. The other films in the set are just too good to pass up because of a single double dip.

Don't you people have friends or family?

More seriously, I too get annoyed with being "forced" to buy something to get a single film I want--but in the few times when this has been a problem, I've managed to make the "double dip" into an impromptu gift to someone who will appreciate it. Just a thought.

A tiny fraction of people have migrated from DVD to Blu-ray at this point, so I suggest that there is a huge number of potential customers who don't have 20 Million Miles on Blu-ray, and no doubt they are the intended market for this set.

I believe the discs are being released separately here in the UK, so you may be able to import the ones you want, as long as they're region coded favourably.

Agreed. I think I got 20,000,000 Miles for under $20, so even if I end up giving it away... well, it's certainly nothing traumatic enough to make me to cry "kick in the eye" and refuse to buy what looks like a stellar set.

Oh, come on, guys. You're adults and this is the year 2008. There's no reason you can't use eBay, the sell/trade areas of forums like this one, online or in-store services like the one at DVD Empire or Gamestop, or any of a number of digital or personal venues to move your discs. You're not sending a message here that Sony will get.

It's hard for me to tell somebody else how to spend their money so I understand what they're talking about with this boxset release.

I'm not telling them what to do with their money, I'm just pointing out the fallacy of this (at least) 10-year-old argument in the face of the many tubes that make up our internets.

Perhaps they don't like dealing with those type of internet outlets. Not much different than those that oppose buying from etailers and strictly do their purchases from B&M retailers even though in many cases, it's more expensive buying from the latter.

Some of you guys really crack me up, I swear. Being berated for not liking the fact that Sony is cajoling me to buy something I already bought less then a year ago is a fucking classic.

Yeah I could go through the hassle and use Ebay to sell the other disc and make a little of the money back but tell me why should I be happy about it?

Yeah it's only $20 but what if studios just continued on with the practice of exclusive movies packed with films already released let's say for example by packaging The Dark Knight with Batman Begins and that was the only way you could get it?

I wonder if you would still meekly bend over with a big shit-eating grin on your face and say "That you sir! May I have another?"

Who knows, you probably would.

Friends or family that are Blu-ray enabled? Are you serious? Nope, not really. Just a brother, and he's a dick so I won't be giving him anything for free.

Thanks for the info but given the high cost of importing it'd probably be cheaper for me to bite the bullet buy the box set and just eat the loss.

Pointing out what fallacy? That we don't want to rebuy something we already have in order because of this release pattern? That we might not have time to waste going onto ebay and other places to get a few bucks back? That we don't cheerfully give away something we bought to happily buy it again?

You have money to burn, more power to you. But those of use who resent the nature of this release are not wrong.

Its enough to double, and triple dip on DVD. But i sure as hell best be getting something besides what i already own to buy it for the SECOND time on Blu-ray, and the 3rd time on a 5" disc. Its not JUST about the money, but it helps push me over the edge on holding out for single releases.

He wanted to make the film(s) in color at the time, perhaps, but certainly not using pasty-looking colorization. I would be really surprised if Harryhausen truly felt as enthusiastic about this process as he claims to be publically - the colorized versions are what the studio used to justify these special editions, and what's Ray gonna do, badmouth it? He keeps repeating in the commentary to the point of distraction what a wonderful achievement this was, but it feels like nothing so much as product placement. There is nothing natural about the look of this so-called "color," no matter how technically improved it might be over that used fifteen or twenty years ago. It is still a bastardization of the original image. Had the original B&W versions not been included, I would not have touched these releases, even with someone else's hands.

Was this necessary? For the record, Jim, I'm nobody's bitch, certainly not Sony's (though I do own a few Sony items). My point was simply this: I bought a movie on Blu-ray. Ten months after it was released, that same disc will be included in a boxed set with three other films that I don't currently own (but want) on Blu-ray. Am I gonna refuse to buy it simply because I already own that one title? Hell, no. That makes me a willing participant in a perceived act of sodomy on Sony's part? Really?

Jim, if this hobby leads you to fling bile like that around (at me or anyone else), you seriously need a new hobby. Last time I checked, this forum does have rules of conduct.

You're perfectly fine with getting the set and having to buy 20MMTE again, I got it. I and a few others are not. If you can't respect concerns that differ from yours fine, but perhaps you should bite you tongue and craft your posts to be a little less confrontational in the future.

BTW - I love the hobby and usually enjoy the membership here but it's the small percentage of "hobbyists" who shit on other members opinions and concerns that occasionally get under my skin. Thanks for your concern over my well-being though. Have a nice day.

Your prior post still crossed the line and we would appreciate it that you cease with such comments in the future.
