WMP11 + PS3 help?

Well, I'm totally perplexed. I'm trying to set up my home PC as a media server for a PS3. I did this:

download WMP 11
Install WMP 11
Library, Share Media, check the box, click OK
tell PS3 to search

I also tried Library, Share Media, check the box; PS3 search.

I never get a pop-up with the PS3 on the PC, and the PS3 never finds any server.

What does happen is that the OK button on the share dialog greys out for a couple of minutes, then returns to normal appearance.

I don't know what might be going wrong, but after downloading service pack 3 and all the other little things that MS wants on my computer ( and spending four hours fixing my network access afterwards) I still have exactly the same behavior.

I have no trouble using the PS3 to surf, and to download the latest upgrade for it.

Any suggestions?

Not sure, thats the steps i used to get my ps3 to work with my pc. You got any firewalls running? Also you could try to see if it would work with Tversity, its a pretty straight forward media server if you want to see if its something with WMP11.

Thanks, I'll give TVersity a shot.

It may well be a hangup with Norton's protection. I can't find a way to shut it off!

This is odd. After downloading SP3, I could not use Internet Explorer. I could use a virtual network to log into my net at work, but could not run the console application. I could use Google Earth. After untangling the snarl with Norton protection, all that stuff worked properly again.

gah. Computers. stupid things! I thought I was in heaven when I bought my first one in 1978. Now it's always a hassle! Ahhh, the good old days.

Interesting - I downloaded TVersity, and the PS3 found it right away. I can see the folders, but none of the images. I guess I have more to learn....

Maybe wmpnetwk.exe is not running under the task manager. Its a process that handles the networking of media player 11. Other than that I'm out of ideas.

Ah...thanks!

I finally figured out what needed doing...the menu in the PS3 was not terribly obvious at first. Now I have added folders to TVersity on the PC so that all my images are available on the TV.

It's quite nice...
