The Disclaimer
Standard disclaimer: All prices are taken from the websites of each chain, or from their printed Sunday advertisements. All prices are subject to change by each chain. Prices and inventory in-store may or may not match the website price.

"LP" in the RoundUp table means a store’s Sunday flyer says "Low Price". That means I could not locate a definite price for the item, and the ad is all I have to go on. Retailers use these phrases in advertisements so that they do not violate MAP (Minimum Advertised Price) agreements with the studios. Doing so can cost them thousands or even millions of dollars in co-op advertising funds.

I, obviously, cannot include EVERY title released in a given week in the RoundUp. The titles included are those that I am interested in...as well as those which I consider will be of interest to a majority of consumers (and sometimes I’ll miss one!). I don't get paid for this, and I don't have the time to list every DVD. So, please don't complain! If there is a title not included in the RoundUp that you want to see, just look it up yourself, and be nice enough to post and share the results with everyone!

Note that I cannot include Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club prices in the RoundUp. They set prices at individual stores based on nearby competition, so there is no way I can say here what price you'll find at YOUR local Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club location. And, as always, Circuit City does not guarantee their sale prices in Hawaii.

Thanks guys!

Just Dark City Blu-ray for me this week. I'd like to get Two Fat Ladies, but not at these advertised prices. I'll wait and hopefully catch a better deal somewhere down the road...

Thanks for the prices. Definitely getting Dark City Blu, Shine a Light Blu and War Games. Considering upgrading to Blu on Top Gun, Harold & Kumar 1 and Lost Boys. But I think I'll wait for sales on those.

Wow what a week! Just look at that Blu-ray list! Too much stuff this week for me to list it all (don't want to scare away the wallet) but the highlights have to be Tiny Toon Adventures: Season 1 Vol. 1, Stargate: Continuum, and Dark City (Blu-ray).

DVD & Blu-ray - It's all about the movies!

Probably just Dark City (BD) for me, maybe the first three Ryan flicks on a BOGO at some point.

Shine A Light is definitely worth a rental. I'm just not sure if I would watch it more than once, which is what is stopping me from picking it up on BD.

PM Heroes at BB. Wow really good deals lately on season sets, Ive recently picked up The X files Complete set, Bones 1&2, Dexter 1&2, All six seasons of 24, and now Heroes all for pennys practically. I got on the BB deal for the 24, Costco 60.00 off coupon on The X Files and Heroes for a savings of 31.00.

I'm curious about other titles, too, like the Clancy stuff and Dark City. We'll see...

Re: Weekly RoundUp 7-29-2008

Possibly Dark City and Heroes. I'd also get the Two Fat Ladies, but as noted above, that's pretty steep for a handful of cooking shows.

For Costco members, I believe this week is the $10 off coupon for a bunch of Universal TV-on-DVD sets including "Heroes" (and "Monk," "The Office," "House," "and "30 Rock" among others). Not sure what regular retail is, but it may be competitive.

EDIT: Looks like "Heroes" S1 at Costco will be $29.99 ($39.99-$10). Target is the better deal (if there's one near you).

That $24.99 BB price on Master & Commander BD is the best price I've seen on that title since it's release.

Figures it would show up just a week or two after I finally found a used copy for $21!

I bought the one and only copy my Best Buy received earlier today. In fact, when I couldn't find it on the shelf, a staffer went to see if they had any in the back room. While he was gone, I found a solitary copy on a rolling cart. When he returned he said they only received one and I replied, "Yeah, And I got it!"

edit-- BTW, it rang up $24.99, but I had a printout of the bestbuy.com listing for $18.99 and they matched it no problem.

I had almost the exact same experience today. I checked one BB and they had none and never received any. So I happened to be close to another today and checked the Blu-ray section. There was one, spine side out, and I grabbed it! Went to pick up War Games and saw another guy asking about Dark City BD, too! Just in time! It rang up at $24.99, but after telling the cashier it was $18.99 on their website (and a check by a manager), I was out the door with the price match. A good day today...

--John

P.S. I forgot the 1st rule of Best Buy...don't rely on their store in-stock position on their website. If they have less than 3 units of anything, it shows as "unavailable". Always check the store if you can!

Fry's Electronics in Southern California (I went to the San Marcos (North San Diego County) location) had about 20 copies of Dark City but it was not marked on sale....it was $22.99. They had the 4 Jack Ryans at $19.99 each and Top Gun at $18.99.

I already pre-ordered both Dark City and The Lost Boys from Amazon last week...but my estimated shipping date is August 11...Looks like I'll be waiting a while to get mine...

I just bought WarGames at Wal Mart & it has all the features it's supposed to have but it's one disc as opposed to every website I've seen which list it as 2 disc (Amazon, DDD, Circuit City.com DVD Spot). Did they just decide at the last minute to put everything on one disc or did somebody out there get a 2 discer?

Just received my WHV preorder of Dark City BD -- can't wait to watch it. Will probably pick up Beowulf BD (for $20?) as soon as the $15 DVD folks here in downtown Manhattan (near City Hall/J&R) have some for sale. Might just wait for a good sale before picking up The Hunt BD.

Re: Weekly RoundUp 7-29-2008

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrgh! (Rant to follow)

I stopped by Circuit City today (Thursday) to see if they had the Dark City BD, and based on my experience, I predict that Circuit City will go out of business within a year

I checked the Blu-ray section and found nothing. Some guy in a black shirt, no name tag, asked me if I needed help. I told him what I was there for, and he found somebody who actually had a name tag and told him I needed help. The second guy looked in the same place I had just checked, found nothing (of course) and proceeded to consult a third person, who told me something about new releases not arriving this week and I should check back in a few days, assuming I had never heard of Best Buy, Walmart or Amazon.com.

The first guy approaches me again and quietly asks me, much like he was trying to sell me a fake Rolex or something, if I would be interested in saving 15 dollars a month on Direct TV. It was kind of sad. The guy reminded me of Jack Lemmon in "Glengarry Glen Ross." I glanced around the store while I politely explained that I was happy with my current TV service, and I noticed there were at least four employees standing around while I, the sole customer in the store at the time, was trying to leave the place (without buying anything) to make a beeline to Best Buy.

I don't know how they stay in business. Really. How do they do it? I've literally spent hundreds of dollars at Best Buy in the past six months and nothing at Circuit City. In the past year, I have purchased an HDTV, a PS3, a Wii, and numerous video games, DVDs and Blu-ray discs and have not spent a single dollar at Circuit City.

I'll say it again -- How in the HELL do they stay in business?

P.S. At Best Buy, there were none in stock, either, but a nice teenaged kid (who didn't try to sell me cable TV service) looked it up on the computer and explained to me, with refreshing honesty, that my local store was not stocking it at all and recommended I order it online, or if I felt like wasting gas, drive to the nearest store 20 miles away.

Thanks for letting me vent, guys.

I loves me some zombies.

I predict that Circuit City will go out of business within a year

Tell me about it. I can't remember the last time I went in there and found a new release I wanted to buy, unless it is a major new release. Anything else, good luck. The DVDs shelves are always in disarray too.

Re: Weekly RoundUp 7-29-2008

Yeah, I don't get Circuit City either. I think the last thing I bought from them was my Nikon D200 DSLR purchased by phone/online (and I very rarely bother to go to their stores anymore), and even that was only because Nikon happened to give them an unusually sizeable allotment during that initial product release period (about two Christmas holiday seasons ago) while they also had a good coupon going at the time (15% off I think). If I had to buy it locally in-store, they wouldn't have had it. And really, their online store is very lame too.

BTW, if you're buying a DVD or BD or similar on sale from Best Buy, I'd recommend reserving the title(s) online first for local pickup. Place the order online for local pickup and then go pick it up a couple hours later (preferably after you receive confirmation). The order is *not* set in stone and charged to your CC until you go pick it up -- and the reservation is held for at least 48 hours IIRC. If you don't pick it up, the order gets automatically canceled after the reservation expires.
