Very excited about this. I thought BLAZING SADDLES was a very good looking Blu-ray release, and this has potential to be even better.

Here's hoping (fingers crossed).

Re: TCFHE Press Release: Young Frankenstein (Blu-ray)

Glad to see Fox is loading it with enough extras to make $28 online more palatable. Not that this wouldn't be in my cart regardless, since it's in my top 10.

Supplement package sounds sensational, but two years in, Blu-ray now has me conditioned to never pre-order another release again. I'll let others be the guinea pigs on these.

Re: TCFHE Press Release: Young Frankenstein (Blu-ray)

For a little while there, my enthusiasm for HDM was lagging because of the lack of decent titles. But there is a lot of great stuff being announced, and this is at the top of the list. Great news!

What knockers!

This is great news.

There's Jessie the yodeling cowgirl. Bullseye, he's Woody's horse. Pete the old prospector. And, Woody, the man himself. Of course, it's time for Woody's RoundUp. He's the very best! He's the rootinest, tootinest cowboy in the wild, wild west!

Agreed. These days, studios cannot be trusted to deliver the kind of quality the format can deliver. A "wait and see" attitude makes sense.

I so hope that they don't ruin this one with heavy-handed DNR. A pristine, grain-fee Young Frankenstein just wouldn't be... well, it wouldn't be Young Frankenstein!

Re: TCFHE Press Release: Young Frankenstein (Blu-ray)

Since I did pick up the 16x9 DVD late last year (before jumping into HDM) -- after not realizing it's been out for a while -- I'll probably just hold off on the BD upgrade until the price is "right", especially given Fox's asking price.

It's **$50** in Canada! Unlike in the U.S., many (perhaps even most) places try to sell at MSRP. I doubt it'll be less than $35 for a while here. Of course, I don't buy BDs here, but just additionally pointing out Fox's ridiculous pricing strategy. I don't own a single Fox BD yet, everybody else is well represented...

And I will definitely get this disc when it's less than $20 in the U.S., surely before Christmas. This is a title whose price has dropped rapidly with previous versions.

Re: TCFHE Press Release: Young Frankenstein (Blu-ray)

Blu-ray/DVD comparison up at DVD Beaver. For people worried about a black-and-white film getting the same treatment as "The Longest Day," you can stop worrying:
Quote:
Previous SD-DVD releases of Young Frankenstein on DVD were regarded as of fairly poor quality (even the 16X9 NTSC version not shown in this comparison). The Region 1 Special Edition in this comparison is non-anamorphic but the PAL edition (below it) is... yet there is not much difference in the overall quality. It is possible that the intentional heavy grain look of Young Frankenstein just didn't translate well to SD. I'm happy to say that the grain structure on this dual-layered Blu-ray (feature taking up a healthy 27.8 Gig for the 1 hour 45 minute film) looks quite wonderful. You can see yourself my clicking the expandable Blu-ray captures. This is not noise - this is good film grain. The SDs look softer and brightened beside it. The Blu-ray shows more detail even with the heavy grain. Contrast, though not perfect, is also very strong. I'm quite happy with how Young Frankenstein looks on Blu-ray. It is far superior to the previous editions.

I hear ya Tony.
I would have snagged this, and The Batman Movie '66 on Blu, if not for the price FOX is asking. Even a "deal" from them can be hard to swallow.

Re: TCFHE Press Release: Young Frankenstein (Blu-ray)

Those screenshots of the BD look very good, especially if compared to the DVDs. And nice to see what appears to be an appropriate level (and quality) of grain.

Re: TCFHE Press Release: Young Frankenstein (Blu-ray)

Geez, I always thought the non-anamorphic DVD was (possibly) the best-looking non-anamorphic DVD out there...but I guess that's not saying much... I skipped the update/anamorphic SD, rare for me, especially for a movie this good. Definitely in for the Blu, once the price comes out of the blue ($50 list in Canada).

Re: TCFHE Press Release: Young Frankenstein (Blu-ray)

Scott, just to confirm, I exchanged the disc and everything is fine - one bad apple I guess. It does look quite nice and I seem to be able to follow the dialogue easier, voices seem more prominent and clearer to me over the previous SD version. As some have mentioned, the price IS on the steep side. I paid 29.00 for How The West Was Won but YF was almost 38.00 ( both before tax ) so it will not help Fox to charge these prices and expect the sales to be great. I just hope they realize this and consider releasing more classic films. I can still afford to do this sort of thing but I did hesitate about purchasing it just the same as I also had Sleeping Beauty and Iron Man. Once in awhile I add up the total in the BD collection and it's a bit startling what a lot of us are spending!
