Fringe - By J.J. Abrams

Fringe - FOX

I think I'll be watching this.
Kind of looks like a revamped X-Files.

"A human being is part of the whole called by us the Universe. We experience ourselves, our thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest --a kind of optical delusion of consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for...

The Abrams name is the only reason I'll give it a chance. Before I heard he was involved, I heard "from the writers of the Transformers." That would have driven me away real fast.

Yes I am curious on the JJ front and the writer's front. This will be a good taste of what these guys are likely to present with the upcoming Trek movie.

Every man is my superior, in that I may learn from him.

Lance Reddick is also in the show, and I really enjoyed his work on "The Wire," and his handful of appearences on LOST.

Although those two writers were some of the main guys behind Alias, and I believe they have been involved with Lost as well. Pretty much, they're JJ's go to guys.

Re: Fringe - By J.J. Abrams

I didn't hear the names in the first trailer I saw. Just, "From the writers of the Transformers." They've obviously done other stuff I've liked, such as Lost, Alias and M:I3. So, maybe it really was Bay's fault.

I ignored the first half of Lost because I doubted JJ Abrahms (despite my love of Alias).

I won't make that mistake with Fringe.

Re: Fringe - By J.J. Abrams

I'll certainly check this out (I guess mostly due to Abram's involvement), but I can't say the show looks or sounds that appealing to me. I don't feel much either way regarding the cast. No one particularly stands out as someone I'd watch a show for (though it's cool to see Charlie from The Mighty Ducks and Denethor landing jobs). The lead actress looks pretty but comes off as a bit bland in the photos and interviews I've seen her in. Of course I expect her to do well since I doubt Abrams would've hired someone who wasn't up for it.

I predict the cast will grow on you.

Well now I'm curious. Why would you intentionally ignore something created by a person if you liked his previous work?

TV's a very collaborative medium, so if what stood out about Alias was Jennifer Garner or some other actor, it makes sense that someone would be more interested in that person's next project than Abrams's. It's worth remembering that at the time, Abrams' reputation was still mostly dramas like Felicity and thirtysomething than action/adventure; it wouldn't be unreasonable to see Alias as the aberration.

The Futon Critic wrote a very favourable review of the pilot and it's getting good buzz on the Internet, so it certainly sounds promising. I haven't been particularly interested in network TV offerings for nearly five years, but I'm looking forward to checking out Fringe and Joss Whedon's Dollhouse.

Re: Fringe - By J.J. Abrams

Wow, I thought this was a great pilot. I knew at the end he'd be questioned, but I thought it'd be Walter again, not Bell. The whole 6 hour after death hint earlier, and the "he's not dead" tombstone in her shared dream or whatever gave that away.

It started out a little cliche, where they say I love you and then immediately after he gets blown up, but the end sort of turned that on its head.

I really liked this and I'll definitely be watching next week.

I liked it overall but I wish there was more of the paranormal aspect of the story and less of the Alias-style meleodrama.

I'm definitely watching next week.

I never watched Alias, but I'm guessing you mean the backstabbing double agent type stuff?

Re: Fringe - By J.J. Abrams

Is this show going to be like Lost. By this I mean, we get more and more mysteries about some large corp. and never get any answers?

God, please don't be a clone of Lost. I like lost, but I don't need another show that has no answers.

I sure hope they have mapped out this thing. (unlike lost)

Well, Abrams actually barely has any involvement in Lost, from what I understand. That's all Lindelof and Cuse.

Re: Fringe - By J.J. Abrams

When he said, "I love you," I said out loud, "Well, he's a dead man." Of course I was right. And then I was wrong. But then I was right again. And in a future ep, I may be wrong

The "fringe" stuff didn't do much for me, but I liked the funny. And does being naked really enhance the brain sync experience? It seems like something a scientist might say just because he can. To make matters worse, why wasn't she actually naked?

Re: Fringe - By J.J. Abrams

The pilot didn't do much for me, but I've heard that it really picks up a few episodes into the storyline.

I loved the three-dimensional lettering that labeled each location, especially the "Baghdad, Iraq" label that was STILL visible over the soldiers as the scene progressed. It reminded me a lot of the title credits for "Panic Room," one of my favorite openings.

Yeah, that was pretty much all that kept me watching in the first half hour. I'm a sucker for stuff like that. I guess it shows my geeky side.

Otherwise, the first 30-45 minutes were very very dull. I'm not sold on Anna Torv in the lead quite yet. There's something about her delivery that doesn't inspire confidence in me OR leave me looking forward to six or seven years with her. However, the moment the Pattern was mentioned and we saw the mechanical arm, the show started picking up. By the end, I'm on board.

While I would have sworn I watched more than an hour of this thing before quitting, maybe I only watched 45 mins or so then, because the entirety of what I watched was duuuuuuuullllll. The script assumes that we care about what happens to any of these people, without give us a reason to. The characters are as unengaging as they get, and so is the dialog. So we spend a lot of time watching people we don't care about doing things we don't care about. Terrible.

Have you watched LOST lately? The last season has been extremely rewarding. A lot of things have fallen into place. And it's obvious that much of it was planned.

Now, speaking of LOST, the musical cues are very similar here, and thus quite distracting.

Looking online, a lot of people quit at about the 1h mark as well.

I mostly was referring to the girl agonizing over having to save the man she loves and the all stuff that came along with that. It's not like they lifted a story from Alias but that show had similar stories dealing with the characters' personal lives and their emotional crisises (if 'crisises' is a word ).
