Well, it has been announced. The Looney Tunes Volume 6 is the final set in the series. Check it out here:

What a total bummer! There are still many, many, many shorts that are my favorites that are not going to be released in this series. I'm almost sorry that I even started getting these. What a let down.

The more I think about this, the more upset I'm getting. This really sucks out loud.

Well, at least that's something. There are several shorts that are my absolute favorites that have yet to make an appearance on DVD and I was really upset that this might be the end of all Looney Tunes on DVD.

Nawww...I never expected them to kill the cash cow. There will always be Looney Tunes on DVD (and/or Blu-ray).

It's just that I like the way these are currently released, giving us a great variety with some new treasures on every disc of every release, and always a surprise around the corner. It will be sad (for me) to see these transition to something that is likely to be more "organized". I know lots of people out there want releases with "just Foghorn" or "just Road Runner" or whatever, but that is NOT my preferred method of watching these. I like them all mixed up, just like I saw them on TV as a kid.

I will be 100% fine with them continuing the LT releases under a name other than Golden Collection on one condition: Absolutely no double dipping! I paid a premium price for the collections so far because they have been superb quality and, at least I thought, would be a way to get all the shorts without any overlap. If they start releasing smaller collections with half already released / half never before on DVD styles, then I'm out. As long as releases are either 100% already available or 100% new to DVD (assuming at least occasional releases of the latter), then I'm in for whatever they throw at us.

I think they just don't want to release "Vol. 7" of something, because sales decline when they do Volume numbers. Maybe they'll release the rest of the shorts in "year" sets...

I agree with the above posts. I'm okay with no more Golden Collections, as long the next generation releases DO NOT overlap content on the previous sets. I second the notion that a lot of people who have collected all the previous sets will be very annoyed if Warner goes in that direction.

That being said, reading about the inclusion of ROCKET BYE BABY on Volume 6 made my day!

Well that's certainly good news to hear, Dave. Thanks for the up-update!

I presume then we will either be seeing a similar grab-bag format, but on smaller volume collections as part of the future releases. Or if there are single character oriented sets, one would assume they might concentrate on some of the LT characters that have received light coverage in the first six sets?

My mood has just gone from shock to pleasant surprise. If your "reliable industry source" is right, then that means WHV (or at least the movie division that handles LT) is paying attention to what we want. IIRC, they originally had the first ten GCs already roughly planned, and they'd need around 17 to release all the shorts. While I had always hoped they'd continue the releases, this has renewed my sense of hope since we're starting anew without actually starting over (a new DVD series, but without double dipping). I'll also add a lower price point (the per short average anyway) and quicker releases (with the same quality) to my wish list seeing as WHV actually seems to care...

If only my other complaints were so easily resolved...

From the beginning, they should have done it the way Popeye is doing it: all the cartoons, in chronological order.

If that's what they have in mind now, I'm going to be happy but also mad because it will mean rebuying all the ones I already have!

But I have a feeling they're not going to be doing chronological sets.

I'd prefer that they just keep going the way they have been. However, if they aren't then how about them doing releases based on character ? Like the rest of the Bugs Bunny in one or more sets. Or a complete collection of all the Foghorn Leghorn ? Or the rest of the Bugs / Daffy pairings in a collection ? At least those would make sense and people could get what they like and not have to sift through toons they don't care for.

Does anyone know if they were getting complaints about the way the previous sets were handled ? Perhaps people didn't like the idea of having so many different styles, eras and characters in one set.

If there will be no more "Golden Collections", I think it would be a better solution with "Silver Collections" with the usual mix with characters and production years, but maybe cheaper sets (2-3 DVD each) and less bonus material. And with less bonus material they could have more cartoons on each disc instead. If it's one thing I don't need, it's another documentary (split in two hallfs) where Chuck Jones explains how they did animate the cartoons...

what gets me is that they didn't finish up the Taz and Marvin the Martian shorts. The folks at Warners are smart to retool the series for the next batch of releases since it'll now get them plenty of speculation buzz for the next year.

I agree with this. I forsee them doing character or theme releases without volume numbers. I think that the "average consumer" would be a lot more likely to pick up a 2 disc set entitled "Bugs Bunny: The Crazy Wabbit Collection" for $20 than "Looney Tunes Golden Collection Vol 7" for $45.

Look how many different Scooby Doo releases that Warner has put out. If they released those similar to the Golden Collections i'm sure that they would not have gone past 6 Volumes either.

Hopefully with theme sets, maybe this will be a good way to sneek in some of the MGM cartoons as well. Maybe a "Tex Avery: The Wild and Routy Collection" (or some such title) that would include WB and MGM shorts. The possibilties are endless.

Well, I finished watching this collection (except for the special features) and I have to say that I'm not all that pleased with this set. If this is what they call 'saving the best for last' then someone really needs to learn the meaning of the word 'best.' Because in my opinion, this was the worst of all of the sets. There were very few (maybe 10) cartoons that I was familiar with. I'm one of those folks that used to watch the Bugs Bunny Road Runner Show (the 90 minute version and later reduced to an hour) in the 70s and those are the cartoons that I'm most familiar with and those are the cartoons that I really want. Most of the shorts on those shows were from 1948 and later. At least when I was watching the show. While I have nothing against any of the cartoons produced before 1948, there are not the ones that I'm really after nor are they the ones that I'm familiar with. I enjoy watching them to a degree, but they are not the ones that I continually revist over and over again.

So, needless to say discs 2 and 3 in this set really did nothing for me. For those that really are looking to get the black and white shorts, then this set is a treasure. There are lots of the old black and white shorts.

I did watch the 15 bonus shorts, but these in my opinion were a travesty. The picture and sound were dreadful. It was pretty obvious that no remastering had been done to these shorts. You could see the reel change dots at the end of a couple of them and one of the black and white shorts even jumped a bit at the beginning. Not WB's best work at all.

As I said earlier, I haven't watched the special features other than the bonus shorts so I can't give an opinion on the contents.

All in all, this set, in my opinion, is the worst of the entire collection. I'm really disappointed in it.

WB seems to treat some of their stuff as "bonus material" so they don't have to remaster it.

Does anyone know of a site(s) with a comprehensive list of the LT cartoons that have been altered for their DVD release, compared to previous VHS and/or LD releases?

I've found several sites that talk about some of them, but none seem to have a comprehensive comparison. I'm also interested in the same info for the Tom & Jerry and Tex Avery cartoons.

The Best Buy exclusive book is a pocket-sized, shortened version of the Looney Tunes Visual Guide by Jerry Beck. It's just the first 3 chapters.

This is the way it should have been done from the beginning. I want sets of Yosemite Sam, Sylvester, Claude the Cat, Daffy, and Foghorn Leghorn. The others I couldn't care less about. I hate it when they mix them up and throw in characters no one wants. I have friends who would love to have Foghorn Leghorn sets for Christmas. As it is, I can't buy them a compilation without a bunch of junk on it.

are you serious... if you want to see the same 25 cartoons over and over again that broadcast in every single saturday morning block for the past forty years, just turn on your television set or pick up any one of the dozens upon dozens of home video releases that reissue the same slop. that's what those premiere collections were for. the looney tunes golden collections were great and I'll take any number of obscure one-shots or pre-'48 films over the same overplayed chuck jones 50's cartoons and boring crap like the roadrunner, foghorn leghorn, etc. these people should be applauded for putting together such thoughtful collections appeasing both people like yourselves who only want to watch the same bugs bunny cartoons twenty times in a row and actual film enthusiasts and collectors with an interest in owning the lesser seen but equally great works of these directors.
