Interview with Nolan and producers on new features for "The Dark Knight" Blu-ray!

Nolan and Thomas both brought up the anticipated Blu-ray version and its capabilities. Nolan summed it up by saying, "The Blu-ray, in particular, will be able to actually use the shifted aspect ratios as it appears on the IMAX screen because the 16:9 aspect ratio is sufficiently different from the 2:4 that you'll actually see a shift on the Blu-ray. The resolution on the Blu-ray is clear enough that you can actually see difference in grain structure and sharpness. So I think it will be quite spectacular."

There are a couple of elements that fans will not be seeing. Thomas said that it's "unlikely" that the DVD will contain alternate takes of Heath Ledger as the Joker [during the junket, the filmmakers and fellow cast members mentioned how Ledger would occasionally riff or improvise some of his dialogue], but pointed out that they have not decided anything for sure yet.

Another popular feature that THE DARK KNIGHT DVD won't have according to Roven: deleted scenes.

"We know there won't be any deleted scenes because there never are," says Roven, noting director Nolan puts everything of importance in the actual movie. "There weren't any on BATMAN BEGINS and there weren't any on this one."

Apart from that, Nolan promised us some "very interesting extras". The man hasn't failed us thus far, so we'll be waiting in excited anticipation.

"Would I rather be feared or loved? Um...easy, both. I want people to be afraid of how much they love me."

Re: Interview with Nolan and producers on new features for "The Dark Knight" Blu-ray!

The Bd will replicate the varying ARs?
(groan) I was afraid of that.
This is of course great news for anyone with a 16:9 display who doesn't use masking. But once again, I'll be penalized for having a constant height set-up. This will be the third release this year where I will have to watch the material letterboxed and projected smaller to account for a gimmicky AR feature (smilebox on HTWWW, Imax here) or due to a studio screw-up (the subtitles on The Professionals).
Ironic that along with higher resolution, Blu-ray is also forcing me to watch the movies at a much smaller size.
I really hope they make this a branching feature or else just a special release with it's own sku for those who can use it (and reluctantly I admit , the plug and play crowd makes up the vast majority of 'enthusiasts' using this tech so people like myself will be SOL yet again.).

Does it help to know that people watching on 1.4:1 IMAX screens will be in the same boat.

Actually, if they kept the IMAX scenes symmetrically matted top and bottom, then you would be able to watch it in 2.4:1 at the same resolution as any other 2.4:1 material presented in 16:9 video. I do not know if this was the case, though.

How in the world is this complaint relevant to HTWWW? The smilebox is an alternate presentation that could only be done the way it is being done. If you have your screen set up for 16:9, then you will be watching the maximum size smilebox presentation possible in your HT.

Re: Interview with Nolan and producers on new features for "The Dark Knight" Blu-ray!

After watching the prologue, I wondered about this myself. The switching of AR is cumbersome IMO, I really wish they had just shot the whole movie in IMAX if it's so important to them. However, that Prologue looked so damn good I'm still glad this is what we're getting.

"Because he's the hero that Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now... and so we'll hunt him... because he can take it... because he's not a hero... he's a silent guardian, a watchful protector... a DARK KNIGHT."

I've yet to see a single complaint in any review about the partial Imax situation, so I'm not going to complain. Haven't even seen the movie yet. Less than two weeks to go.

Death to PG-13! And now death to DVNR too!!

Have any of the advanced screenings even been in IMAX?

Yes, which is why I posted above. Apparently they are showing the film in IMAX to critics wherever possible.
