Problem with Toshiba 36hf72

Hi all, it's been a long time since I posted (about six years!)


Anyway, I got a problem I'm hoping someone can help me with.


I got a free Toshiba 36HF72 (36" HD CRT) the other day.

I'm having troubles with the Colorstream (component) inputs. Whenever I use these inputs, I get a transparent greenish band along the left edge and another about 6" in from the right edge.

It appears greenish, but I believe this is because there is no blue light in these areas.

This problem does not seem to occur on S-video or Yellow RCA inputs.

I tried moving the component wires around to see if there was some sort of interference (a friends suggestion) but that did not seem to change anything.

The only device I have with a component out is a older Sony DVD player (non-progressive outputs).

Does anyone know how to get rid of these greenish (no blue) bands? Or at least what is causing them?

So, I tried a cheap memorex dvd player that had progressive output and the green bars went away.

But, now the whole screen is a green tint. And moving the component cable changes the picture. Everything from a light greenish tint on everything to the picture just disappearing.

Any suggestions for this problem?

I went back to the Sony (no progressive) DVD player because I figured I'd just use the S-Video since the component wasn't working.

Just for fun I tried the component again. The whole screen turned a heavy tint of green.

Frustrated I plugged in the S-Video cable to the TV. The component picture went to normal colors. Still, there was the green bar from before.

After much fussing to no avail, I just moved the whole assembly back into entertainment center and turned everything back on. I left the component cable plugged in case I ever wanted to revisit the issue. But the S-video cable was plugged in as well as that was going to be my main viewing option.

Once I got everything back in, I turned it on.

Perfect picture on component inputs now. No green tint. No green bar. Perfect.

I'm not touching anything now. I don't know what I did, but I don't want to undo it. I think it has something to do with the fact that the component inputs on the Toshiba tv appear to be plastic. I wonder if there is no shield/ground connection to the DVD player and once I plugged in the S-video, the ground connection was made between the two devices and the picture cleared up. Maybe. Seems stupid to have plastic component connectors.


(I realize no one at the this site seems to care, but I hate when I do a search for a problem and no solution (or lack thereof) is ever posted.)

Not a repairman. Repairmen don't really hang out here. Just sounds like the TV needs a repair.

Usually figure $250 to $300 for most such jobs.
