Three-Time Academy Award® Winner

The Adventures of Robin Hood
Starring Errol Flynn, the premiere swashbuckler of the sound era,
Olivia de Havilland, Basil Rathbone and Claude Rains

Debuts on BLU-RAY™ HI-DEF August 26 from Warner Home Video

Burbank, Calif., July 1, 2008 – On August 26, Warner Home Video will release on Blu-ray™ Hi-Def one of the most colorful and quintessentially romantic swashbuckling adventures in film history. The Adventures of Robin Hood received four Academy Award® nominations, including Best Picture, ultimately winning three (for Best Film Editing, Best Art Direction and Best Music, Original Score). In 1995, the film was selected for preservation in the United States Film Registry.

The Adventures of Robin Hood, restored with Warner’s patented Ultra-Resolution process, was one of the few major 1930’s motion pictures filmed in Technicolor. This Blu-ray™ Hi-Def™ version will sell for $28.99 SRP. Orders are due July 22.

About the Movie

The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) is based on the classic English legend of Sherwood Forest. Errol Flynn, who performed many of the stunts himself, is at his athletic, romantic best in a role originally intended for James Cagney. Olivia de Havilland and consummate screen villains Basil Rathbone (Sir Guy of Gisbourne) and Claude Rains, round out the all-star cast.

In this rousing family adventure, nobleman Robin, the Earl of Locksley (Flynn), becomes an outlaw when he opposes Prince John’s (Claude Rains) attempt to capture the throne from brother Richard the Lionhearted (Ian Hunter), King of England. Robin escapes to Sherwood Forest where he recruits his band of Merrie Men to help with the resistance. Assuming the name of Robin Hood, he robs the rich to aid the poor, heavily taxed at the hands of the Sheriff of Nottingham (Melville Cooper). At the same time, he falls in love with Maid Marian (de Havilland). When Marian is captured, Robin and his men storm Nottingham Castle, rescue her and win back the crown.

Re: WHV Press Release: The Adventures of Robin Hood (Blu-ray)

This is great news and it has been added to our release shedule below. I already have it on HD DVD, but it will be interesting to see how the BR presentation compares to the prior HD release.

Excellent news. Warner should make this a "book title".

Re: WHV Press Release: The Adventures of Robin Hood (Blu-ray)

This is one of my absolute favorites. I already own the HD DVD as well; but as long as the Blu-ray Disc presentation is the same or better, I will 'upgrade' eventually to the BD in an effort to divest myself from the HD DVD format.

Didn't pick up the HD-DVD version - was this the case on that release as well, or are the 1080P Warner cartoons new to this version? In either case, these alone are worth the price of admission for me...

Re: WHV Press Release: The Adventures of Robin Hood (Blu-ray)

The three 1080p cartoons are identical to the HD DVD release, but nonetheless represent the debut of Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies on the BD format, which is worth a huzzah or two.

An announcement for Casablanca should also be forthcoming. Warner included it on a "coming to Blu Ray" reel they showed at the kick-off session for the EMA HME in Las Vegas last week. No indication as to dates, but it is nice to know it is in the works.

Yes, I'm going to buy Robin Hood and Casablanca as well.

Re: WHV Press Release: The Adventures of Robin Hood (Blu-ray)

Cool, if this lives up to the standard set by the HD DVD, it'll be a must buy. One of my favorite classic movies, and it looks fabulous on my HD DVD setup. Nice to know that it'll be easy to replace when that system gives up the ghost.

I will not replaced any HD DVD if the BRD is the same with PQ and extras. To me it's a waste of money with two XA-2 players and a A-35 for backup.

Same here, Robert. I went into HD-DVD with my eyes open and plan to enjoy those discs for (hopefully) a number of years. I have my original A-1 as my backup player, and kind of wish that I had picked up one more player for a rainy day. But no point in worrying about it now.

Re: WHV Press Release: The Adventures of Robin Hood (Blu-ray)

Well to each their own. Rushing out and spending hundreds of dollars on a backup HD DVD player or two in order to play a few dozen titles (that would be making it out to Blu-ray eventually anyway) is a waste of money to me.

Plus the aftermarket value of these discs is still somewhat decent enough to cover a large portion of the BD cost. Yep I've got my "eyes wide open" and I'm planning ahead for that rainy day when my XA-2 crashes.

Jim,
You appear to be rather defensive and my "waste of money" comment wasn't meant to criticize you, but more to explain my situation. Each of our situations are very different, I have two HT setups in my house with an XA-2 in each setup. I only use those players to play HD DVDs which means these players will most likely last for many years to come. I was fortunate enough to buy an A-35 from Amazon at a rock bottom price that was far short of $200. I probably didn't need to buy that player at the frequency I use my other players. Anyway, how you spend your money is you're own business.

Re: WHV Press Release: The Adventures of Robin Hood (Blu-ray)

Robert,

Not really defensive but since you quoted me directly I felt the need to explain my position further. But yes if I were in your position already with 2 players I'd probably not change out my HD DVD's for BD's either for a while.

You may also have many more HD disc's than I have (just guessing) which changing out two dozen wouldn't be as painful and costly as say 100 discs or more.

Plus I use my HD player all the time for DVD playback so I figure the more I use it the less time it has on this Earth. The poor bugger.

Well, it's only for the HD DVD since that's the only HDM release currently, but there's two custom covers that uses that exact artwork:
