Canada returns to U.S. broadcast television - Flashpoint: Season 1

The highly-anticipated new CTV/CBS series - and the first since Due South, stars Enrico Colantoni, Whistler's David Paetkau, Hugh Dillon, and Amy Jo Johnson, is being simulcast at 10pm EST on Friday, July 11th on both networks.

Here is CBS' promo for "Flashpoint":

Here is also CBS' "sneak peak" at the series premiere:

As I posted in the "So begins the TV show doldrums...” thread, I'm really looking forward to watching this on CTV.

So who else will be watching "Flashpoint"... either on CBS or CTV?

Just set the Tivo HD to record the Sunday 10pm repeat. Its good to see Keith Mars get out from behind his Private investigator's desk and move on from the county Sheriff's job to big city crime!

Re: Canada returns to U.S. broadcast television - Flashpoint: Season 1

Just a reminder: both CBS and CTV will rebroadcast the pilot episode on Sunday at 10pm EST, in case any Americans or Canadians missed it last night.

I thought the pilot was excellent, and it looks like another high-quality Canadian series. I'm going to continue to watch and DVR this series.

Re: Canada returns to U.S. broadcast television - Flashpoint: Season 1

I didn't know Flashpoint was a Canadian production, but 2 actors pronouncing the word "process" as "PRO-cess" and not the more Americanized version "Prah-cess" tipped me off.

I found the show a bit dour and not all that involving (didn't much care about Ed Lane's home life, or the drywall loungings of the female sharpshooter). I'll record it since there's nothing on on Friday nights, but it won't be priority viewing on the weekend for me unless it really picks up some steam.

The U.S. ratings are in and "Flashpoint" was the highest-rated timeslot since May's season finale cliffhanger of "Numb3rs".

I hear it did extremely well in Canada as well.

Re: Canada returns to U.S. broadcast television - Flashpoint: Season 1

I like Enrico Colantoni, and while "procedural" shows aren't my bag, I do love 'The Unit' and the previews for this one seemed to have that vibe.

I couldn't have been more wrong. That was one painful hour of television. I do admit, for me to like a show like this, it has to be really well written and well done, but this was neither. Poor Enrico had nothing to work with.

With that said, it wouldn't surprise me at all if this show does well. If the CSI's of the world do as well as they do, there's no reason this one shouldn't as well.

Re: Canada returns to U.S. broadcast television - Flashpoint: Season 1

I also fall into the "disappointed" category. I was looking forward to the show but, unfortunately, it focused too much on the officer's personal life. There wasn't enough of a balance between the personal/professional lives. And even the hostage storyline wasn't as engaging as it could have been.

I'll give it a couple more weeks to see if it improves.

Due to strong ratings, both CBS and CTV are moving "Flashpoint" to Thursdays at 10pm EST beginning this week.

Re: Canada returns to U.S. broadcast television - Flashpoint: Season 1

I like this show, I really do, but only when they are dealing with the negotiating side. Who is the advisor for the tactical portion of the show? They should be fired. All I could do with the last episode is constantly point out ways they could have taken down that room without the boy or the cop being hurt. And that Magic 8-Ball sized camera, ugh.
The negotiating side is cool though and I loved the episode with the father in the hospital.

Flashpoint

This is the show's fifth week, I believe. I've been watching and enjoying it. Enrico Colantoni is always good, and I like this Hugh Dillon guy. Didn't know him before.

The premiere was the number one show of its night. I don't know how it's done since then, but CBS is looking to expanded it beyond the initial 13. At this point, I just hope they get all of those episodes aired.

Re: Canada returns to U.S. broadcast television - Flashpoint: Season 1

The domestic violence story was a good one. Always nice to see Chandra West. (Last seen as the porn-star ex-wife on John From Cincinnati, and formerly the crazy doctor girlfriend from NYPD Blue. And a few of us remember her - pre-boob job - from the first two episodes of CSI.)

This week was really good, much better than last week. I wouldn't mind seeing this picked up for a full season order.

Those girl gang members are some of the dumbest people on the planet. "The mall's in lockdown. Cops are everywhere. Let's start blazing away!" Then, they wise up a little and change their appearance, but . . . "We can't ditch the guns. He'd kill me if I lost them." How's about you either take your chances with that, or stash them somewhere to attempt retrieval later?

This show is sort of the Ghost Whisperer of cop shows. Just about every episode has had an emotional, tearjerker ending.

I guess if CBS doesn't pick it up, odds are good we'll eventually get to see the second season by importing the DVDs.

I've been watching "Flashpoint" on CTV. I get both CBS and CTV as I live near the Canadian border. But as soon as whoever owns the DVD rights officially announces this on DVD, I'll be importing them for sure.

It's not must-see TV for me, but I'm still watching. I'd also at least rent the S2 DVD's if CBS dropped it.

Re: Canada returns to U.S. broadcast television - Flashpoint: Season 1

I've heard CBS advertised next week's episode as the "season finale". It's not, and I'm wondering if this is the sign that they are going to drop it or broadcast the 4 remaining episodes with the 13 more ordered for a second season next year.

Re: Canada returns to U.S. broadcast television - Flashpoint: Season 1

I thought that would be a rather short season. I suspect that, yeah, they're putting it on reserve for a bit, so that they can get 11th Hour started along with the rest of their shows. I wouldn't be terribly surprised if Flashpoint was the first thing off the bench should something fail, although it might also depend on when CTV plans to shoot the second season.

Re: Canada returns to U.S. broadcast television - Flashpoint: Season 1

I've found it to be a suprisingly resonant premise, and a very well shot series.

Manages to stay away from trite AND boring, and really squeezes all the emotional esence from this situation where no one knows the other, all sides are heavily armed, and the tactical unit's objective is that no one die. A lot of psychology, judgment, training and skill at work, and they display it quite well, so far.

Re: Canada returns to U.S. broadcast television - Flashpoint: Season 1

Bogey Whisperer. The only SWAT show to make you weep like a little girl every time it wraps up. I'm lucky to have seen the ad for it on yesterday's Jeopardy recording, because I wasn't expecting it and haven't logged into the HTF until now today. Haven't watched it but I did record it.

Gah. Friday's now a big problem. Ghost Whisperer, Friday Night Lights, Flashpoint, Star Wars, Fifth Grader, Don't Forget the Lyrics. There's a conflict with at least two of them. I went to Time-Warner to see if they had four tuner DVRs yet, but they didn't know anything about them. Besides, from what I read after getting home, the tuners on those units are two HD/two SD. Not the ideal solution.

Re: Canada returns to U.S. broadcast television - Flashpoint: Season 1

That's good news. I like a lot of dark and complex entertainment, so this is my change of pace show (along with Castle). What I like about this show is the good guys are basic normal decent good guys. And often even the bad guys are simply good guys on a bad day, or maybe marginal guys on a bad day. The cops don't treat them as "criminals" but as a "person taking a wrong turn." Perhaps sometimes the show goes overboard in trying to reach out to people putting themselves and others in danger, but the show appeals to something in me about how to treat people, even when they're screwing up.
