The Prices

The Disclaimer
Standard disclaimer: All prices are taken from the websites of each chain, or from their printed Sunday advertisements. All prices are subject to change by each chain. Prices and inventory in-store may or may not match the website price.

"LP" in the RoundUp table means a store’s Sunday flyer says "Low Price". That means I could not locate a definite price for the item, and the ad is all I have to go on. Retailers use these phrases in advertisements so that they do not violate MAP (Minimum Advertised Price) agreements with the studios. Doing so can cost them thousands or even millions of dollars in co-op advertising funds.

I, obviously, cannot include EVERY title released in a given week in the RoundUp. The titles included are those that I am interested in...as well as those which I consider will be of interest to a majority of consumers (and sometimes I’ll miss one!). I don't get paid for this, and I don't have the time to list every DVD. So, please don't complain! If there is a title not included in the RoundUp that you want to see, just look it up yourself, and be nice enough to post and share the results with everyone!

Note that I cannot include Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club prices in the RoundUp. They set prices at individual stores based on nearby competition, so there is no way I can say here what price you'll find at YOUR local Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club location. And, as always, Circuit City does not guarantee their sale prices in Hawaii.

Re: Weekly RoundUp 7-1-2008

Only thing I'd even consider buying ia the Batman The Movie SE at CC for $6.99. I'll have to see what it has though as it'd be a double dip for me. I still have the 2001 release which is pretty solid. The nice thing is that if I buy it I can get $2 from secondspin if I want to dump the '01 making it only a $5 net purchase.

Not a thing for me this week. I would consider the Batman movie from 66 on Blu, but not at any of those prices! FOX is just crazy!
I spent to much the last 2 weeks from Deep Discount anyway. I could use a rest from buying to watch what i got.

I'd be intereste in "Batman The Movie" on BD, but the fact that it can be had for as little as 6.99 on SD-DVD and the lowest it can be had on BD is $26.95 makes me reject it on principle. I'll wait for an Amazon sale.

Yeah. When I mentioned the wider-than-usual gap in prices, I meant to point out the Batman SD to BD gap as well as the price differential at the retailers.

Yet look how close the Mad Men: Season 1 SD to BD prices are.

Re: Weekly RoundUp 7-1-2008

After all of the good things I've read about it, I think I will pick up Mad Men as a blind buy. Also, that's a heck of a price on the X-Files season sets. For whatever reason, I never bought any when I migrated over from LaserDiscs, so maybe I'll invest in the first two or three seasons. If the BB HBO sale included Flight of the Conchords, I'd be all over that too, but, since it is not featured on the Web site, I doubt it will be discounted at the store either.

Because with Mad Men, like their Weeds releases, Lionsgate has the same MSRP for the DVD and Blu-ray sets. FOX could definitely learn from them.

I just remembered why I passed on the X-Files season sets when they were re-released. Fox eliminated all of the bonus features of the original versions. I guess I will add the now OOP "Ultimate X-Files" to my watch list...

Walker, Texas Ranger: Seasons 1-6

Mike, isn't that supposed to be Seasons 1-5 and the Final Season? The last season was number 8, and it was actually the first to be released. Season 6 likely won't be coming out for several months at least.

Ill be double dipping on Batman the movie on standard dvd, simply because of the kickass cover art!!!!! I dont double dip often , but the price is cheap enough.Anyway,I wont give up the older edition, just in case the new dvd doesnt include everything from the 2001 dvd.I wonder what the next edition will be called, perhaps JINGLE BELLS BATMAN SMELLS EDITION, LOL !!!!!!!!!

Yes, Fox should learn from the Lionsgate pricing.

I want to get Point Break, but even at $27.95, that's too steep a price for me. I hope Fox reads the boards since there is no Studio Feedback forum anymore (or am I missing it?).

Sony's In the Line of Fire for $19.95 is better.

I'd sure think twice after reading Robert Harris' thread in HD-Software.

Re: Weekly RoundUp 7-1-2008

I discovered something interesting today. Circuit City has a decent price on the Blu-ray of In the Line of Fire, but they're not shipping stock to many of their stores, including all the stores in Manhattan.

I wonder if this is a sign of their future attitude toward catalogue titles. If so, they're about to lose a lot business to Amazon, which has faster and more reliable shipping.

^ Michael, the other option is that CC is a really crappy company losing hundreds of millions of dollars per quarter. They clearly disdain customers, so the attitude of "we get it in when we get it in" really isn't surprising. IMHO, of course.

It's Walker Texas Ranger Seasons 1-5 and The Final Season. You can pull it up on Amazon. It'll be awhile till we get Walker Season 6. Probably a little over a month after we get JAG Season 7 later this year, if Paramount's release schedule stays the same as it has in the past for these two shows.

Isn't that a sign of their *current* attitude? Same old. . .

A distinct possibility. But it wasn't "we get it in when we get it in". It was clearly stated: "We are not carrying it at this store." Then they voluntarily checked the other Manhattan stores for me and determined that those stores aren't carrying it either.

I thought it was interesting, because this is the first time I've seen them take this position with something that takes up so little shelf space as a DVD or Blu-ray. They don't keep a deep inventory, but they've always kept up with new releases, especially in their flagship store downtown, which has substantial square footage. It almost looks like they're starting to retrench, even though they just opened a new store on Fifth Avenue, right next to Best Buy (a bad move, BTW, because the side-by-side comparison makes them look even worse).

True enough. It just doesn't sound like anyone in the store thought much of not carrying a brand new BD release from a major studio with a major star in it. At least they took the time to check for you, though.
