Sneakers on the ground

(with apologies to our fine men and women in uniform!)

Ron and I are officially in Vegas, with our rooms claimed, and a few other HTFer filtering in. Ron and Justin are waiting for his room to get set then I think it's setup time.

I'm also officially 'down' having sunk a few bucks into a 1-3 no limit holdem game while waiting for our rooms =)

The networking is WIRED ONLY and is $9.95 a day or $12.95 a day for 'premium' service. I clicked on the premium button to see what that was all about and it automatically registered me for today at that higher price. Grrr! I still have no idea what that gets me that the regular service does not. For those of you who have multiple lappys per room, this could be tricky, maybe a quick Frys run to pick up cheap wired routers wouldnt be a bad idea If anyone figures out what the tiered differences are, please pst it.

STARBUCKS ON THE CASINO LEVEL!!!!!

The walk to the Palms is not insignificant. Plan for a 20 minute walk in the hot (its a dryyyyy heat) sun!

If anyone gets in and needs info, call me at 908 461 7181, I'm just chilling for now, avoiding the casino floor, tho I may go check out the WSOP action.

Screw that, I'm taking a cab

Thanks for the update Sam; amazing to think they're just wired, but hopefully that means faster speeds. Can you let us know what the "Premium" service is once you find out?

I figure I have to be up aroung 3:30-4am tomorrow so I can catch my flight, and I'm debating whether it's even worth going to bed tonight, or just staying up and crashing when I get there. Any idea what time check-in is at the Rio? Maybe I can slip the person on the desk a couple of bucks and get into a room early.

Re: Sneakers on the ground

If you check in at the Rio by 10:30am rooms start to become
available by 12:30pm.

20 minute walk to the Rio is a tad exaggerated, me thinks. 10-15 minutes
is more like it. Not the greatest walk in 107 degree heat but I should note
the heat is so dry the body does not sweat.

Re: Sneakers on the ground

OK, 10 hours sleep in and Starbucks is about 200 yards away, I'm ready to do Vegas right today =p I think my plan is to take a taxi over to Frys, then back here, then either a dip in the pool (NO, not the $30 a day topless one, tho I'm positive I could earn a ton of tips doing that!) or a quick run to the strip to take a few pics, and then over to the Palms to register and see if I can help the guys setting up at all. Again if anyone has any Qs and you dont want to bug Ron, gimme a shout =p

Edit: RIP George! Your seven words will keep your memory alive for me!

Re: Sneakers on the ground

Everyone both Justin and myself have met so far are super nice and are really an awesome bunch (just like Ron mentioned). We definitely had a great time at both the restaurant and a club called Coyote Ugly (plenty of moments to share with all of you today.. and a few videos ).

The news of Carlin's death SHOCKED both Justin and myself. We posted a quick bit over at our site. With Stan Winston dying JUST LAST WEEK and now Carlin, we've lost 2 legends in less than a week

Re: Sneakers on the ground

Frys report: 18 with tip from the Rio and 20 with tip to the palms, so probably not worth the trip in economic terms but worth it for their sheer selection. I bought MiB and skipped the other new releases from last week and snagged three $20 ps3 games. Not sure if I will go back for new release tuesday unless we get three or four guys to split the cab =)

I got my badge but they woulnt give em to our other guys. Swag bag has a DTs bluray demo and an independent film. The htf room is shaping up nicely and the panny ae2000 looks awesome. Also gave a short interview to one of the mags covering the show, hopefully we get some good exposure. Wifi is up and running here so More soon!

This is my first experience with "metered" Internet usage at a hotel: the $12.95 rate is for a higher bandwidth connection.

Re: Sneakers on the ground

OK, had the lower tier for about half a day now and it 'feels' as fast as the other tier. Tyler seems to think it's just a static ip if you go to the upper tier but I dunno. I'm sticking with the lower from here out.

Double post, so will just say THANKS to John Steffans for the Get Smart invite, was an absolute blast of a movie, I laughed my butt off. Also thanks to all who contributed to the dinner tonight, I was stuffed and still brought home extras, and the conversation was great!

Re: Sneakers on the ground

The dinner at TGI Friday's was excellent with great food and an all around fun group of people. Big thanks to Tyler and ALL of HTF for putting this particular part of the event on.

One thing I've noticed about Vegas so far is that everyone is seemingly so damn nice. No one pushing or shoving. Perhaps this is because we're spending so much money! Or maybe I'm use to the Boston scene

I'm looking forward to a great day of fun. Look for video and photo coverage soon!

Re: Sneakers on the ground

For those looking for the pics Ron has removed my links and asked me to hold off posting them so he can put up a show wrapup post like previous years.

Just wrapped up wiht Allumination filmworks where we met with Mr Most and Mr Williams, they had some great stories for us and based on what we saw I predict great things! There was also a cameo by the 305 guys and I'm looking forward to getting a look at their disk!

Sony promises BD Live on all Blu-ray releases - 6/24/2008 - Video Business

An awesme day all around, EVERYONE was so nice to us today, even the retailers who didnt quite 'get' us last year. Jamie Kennedy was nothing like what I expected and was absolutely gracious, as was his fellow actor Dave Sheridan (from Scary Movie and other films, including an upcoming Wayans brothers rip on the dance genre where he will play the Patric Swayze part!).
Dave Sheridan (I)

Mr. Begley was a lot more interesting than I would have guessed and a terrific story teller!

Well, I haven't checked yet
and I haven't been bitched at yet, so I'm assuming it was 100% clean
Not a problem.
My boss shares the same love of movies
and understood that I had media press there.
The air conditioning problem is being addressed, currently being fixed.
It was ridiculous that it was that hot.
I never had a problem when I saw Indy in there.

Re: Sneakers on the ground

I have to start off by saying that my wife and I had a great time, and we loved personally meeting everyone. We personally had a better time this year then last and felt that this was a way better experience.
I have to thank HTF, SVS, and the other sites that help sponsor this event.

Thank you,

Speaking of clean enough, Paul you were a fantastic roommate who was very organized and tidy.

I too had a great time with everyone at Dinner at TGI Fridays and all of the events. I do hope everyone made it home safely. (I wish I had Winston's commute)

I look forward to seeing all of my friends again soon especially Winston, Paul, Ron and Andrew.

Thanks to everyone for making this a great experience.

Re: Sneakers on the ground

I equally had a fantastic time meeting many new faces and those both Justin and I were fortunate enough to meet last October. Every event was exciting and well put together (excellent work Ron).

Both HTF and HighDefDiscNews have shot a majority of the event. We're compiling all the footage so hold on for video coverage.

We'll definitely be returning in October for the HTF Hollywood Meet so expect us there.

Actually, I trashed the room. Mikey's just tryin' to make me look, um, "bad." I'm "happy" you were in the room on a conference call instead of at the Panasonic Hollywood Lab presentation.
