The Disclaimer
Standard disclaimer: All prices are taken from the websites of each chain, or from their printed Sunday advertisements. All prices are subject to change by each chain. Prices and inventory in-store may or may not match the website price.

"LP" in the RoundUp table means a store’s Sunday flyer says "Low Price". That means I could not locate a definite price for the item, and the ad is all I have to go on. Retailers use these phrases in advertisements so that they do not violate MAP (Minimum Advertised Price) agreements with the studios. Doing so can cost them thousands or even millions of dollars in co-op advertising funds.

I, obviously, cannot include EVERY title released in a given week in the RoundUp. The titles included are those that I am interested in...as well as those which I consider will be of interest to a majority of consumers (and sometimes I’ll miss one!). I don't get paid for this, and I don't have the time to list every DVD. So, please don't complain! If there is a title not included in the RoundUp that you want to see, just look it up yourself, and be nice enough to post and share the results with everyone!

Note that I cannot include Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club prices in the RoundUp. They set prices at individual stores based on nearby competition, so there is no way I can say here what price you'll find at YOUR local Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club location. And, as always, Circuit City does not guarantee their sale prices in Hawaii.

Re: Weekly Round-Up 6-24-2008

Nice touch including the Xanadu trailer, Mike.

It's too bad In Bruges is a Focus release. Otherwise it might be getting a Blu-ray release, and it's a film that really needs the additional resolution.

Re: Weekly Round-Up 6-24-2008

You know HD-DVD is dead when--after a long drought in which there are no new releases--the only title to be released this week is...

"Disco Pigs."

There is nothing further I can possibly add at this point.

"Disco Pigs?" Really? And it's an HD-DVD exclusive? If only they'd released that title two years ago, the whole format war might have turned out very differently.

Hear, hear. I think In Bruges is the best film of the year to date, and if it was on BD I'd be buying it Tuesday. As it is, I'll wait & hope...

And ditto on the Xanadu trailer. Even though that came out the year I graduated college, it seems like it's from an era much further back.

Xanadu was one of my first-ever DVD purchases. I had to go to Laser's Edge and special order it. I'm looking forward to comparison reviews; may very well have to double-dip this one.

Re: Weekly Round-Up 6-24-2008

What's "Disco Pigs"?

Early Edition: The First Season is the only release for me this week, and it was shipped on Friday. I'm still looking around to make sure CBS didn't edit this one as its one of my "holy grails."

Thanks Mike.

Disney/Buena Vista/Miramax: Please put Beautiful Girls on Blu-ray with bonus features and the original theatrical trailer in 1080p, and an anamorphic re-release with bonus features and the original theatrical trailer day-and-date on DVD. Thanks!

Re: Weekly Round-Up 6-24-2008

Price match on Men in Black from BB last week. Maybe the MI movies I saw at WalMart for $19.99 last week. Maybe something more from the DD sale.

I dunno...I'm kinda feeling overwhelmed with discs right now and might cut back just a bit. (Anyone who knows me will undoubtedly say "yeah, right." I'm such a movie whore...)

Thanks, Mike. Getting the new Futurama movie and The Hammer this week. I'm also intrigued by Journey to the Far Side of the Sun, which I'd never heard of before opening this thread. I may check that one out.

If you have seen the live action Gerry Anderson shows UFO, or Space:1999 that should give you an idea of what to expect with Journey to the Far side of the Sun, aka Doppleganger in the UK.

Haven't found a comparison review...but some sites are saying this is the first-ever widescreen DVD release. If that's true, this would be a no-brainer, right?

Anyway...here's one review which intrigues with the following:

Quote:
Some remember Xanadu as a colossal flop, some love the film for all its cheesy glory, but most of all, Xanadu is a film of missed opportunities. To begin with, there's that paper thin plot, but as Patricia Kelly (widow of Gene Kelly) notes on the DVD, musicals have been built on less.

A few of the musical production numbers are nicely staged, and there's a cute animated sequence set to ELO's soaring ballad "Don't Walk Away," but other songs are dealt a bad hand by the production team. "Magic," sung by Olivia Newton-John, was at the top of the Billboard charts when the film was released in August 1980. But in the movie, it's relegated to cavernous-sounding background music as ONJ and Michael Beck skate around the derelict Pan-Pacific Building in L.A. "I'm Alive" is a great piece of power-pop by ELO, but on screen it comes off rather anemic as ONJ and her fellow muses dance against a static backdrop on a dead-end street. And Gene Kelly always was disappointed with the film's final number, because the cameraman framed him too tightly, cutting off his legs during a big roller-skating sequence! (Gene was a fantastic skater – see "I Like Myself" from the 1955 musical It's Always Fair Weather).

This may be the first DVD I've ever seen in which the film's director, producers, and choreographer spend much of the time they're allotted on the DVD's documentary feature addressing the film's faults. Director Robert Greenwald, now known more for his muckraking documentaries Outfoxed and Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price, freely admits the script was weak to begin with, and "never got fixed." Patricia Kelly notes how Gene Kelly was enthusiastic about the film's concept, but felt that it just "didn't come off." And Kenny Ortega, the film's choreographer, recounts how the team threw in everything but the kitchen sink into the final number, "Xanadu," and kept going until "there's no more money, and there's no more time, and I can't find anything more, this is it." Not the greatest way to end a movie.

There's Jessie the yodeling cowgirl. Bullseye, he's Woody's horse. Pete the old prospector. And, Woody, the man himself. Of course, it's time for Woody's RoundUp. He's the very best! He's the rootinest, tootinest cowboy in the wild, wild west!

Re: Weekly Round-Up 6-24-2008

Ya know...I was reminded over in the "HD Bargains" thread that I meant to post the following in this week's Round-Up: Amazon has a number of these themed 3-packs of Blu-ray discs that people might want to check out. they're not "great" deals, but definitely "not bad" deals.

One of them, for example, is a "War" bundle of Patton, Sand Pebbles & Longest Day for $65. There are also comedy, action, drama bundles, etc. They're not easy to find. I cannot find a page where they are all grouped together. There is a second "War" bundle for $60: Battle of Britain, Bridge Too Far & Flyboys.

But these bundles would be a great way to add Blu-ray titles to one's collection...especially if just getting started.

While "Disco Pigs" may not be at the top of the most-wanted high-def film list, it is actually quite a good film starring a young Cillian Murphy.

The original release was anamorphic widescreen. Those sites must be either copying and pasting their old review or they aren't aware it was already released.

I picked up first season of Early Edition today. I didn't even notice that it was coming out this week until I saw it on the shelves at Borders. I hope that we will get the complete series of this show. It was one of my favorites at the time.

I couldn't help myself. I picked up the Men in Black BD at Target for $19.99 last night. It's a sickness. I cannot believe the double-dipping I've done in BD already...when I swore I wouldn't!

Sad thing is that one of the first things I do on Sunday is check your excellent Weekly Roundup. I think this week I read it before I was completely awake last Sunday. I must make a note to self - "Check Roundup every Sunday after I have had my first cup of coffee."

Thanks again for a great effort.
