ENCINO, CALIFORNIA (June 16, 2008) … Talented newcomer Jon Chu is named EMA’s Breakout Director of the Year, and will be celebrating the success of his box office hit and directorial debut Step Up 2: The Streets during EMA’s Home Entertainment Awards. Professional dancers will perform a number from the film at the ceremony, taking place on June 24 during EMA’s Home Media Expo 2008, show organizers announced today. The convention will be held June 24-26, 2008 at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, NV.

“It is clear that Jon Chu has a promising career ahead of him,” said EMA President Bo Andersen. “His cinematic triumph demonstrates that given the opportunity to collaborate and create, he will make his mark as a filmmaker. EMA anticipates great things from this gifted and able breakout director of the year.”

While attending the USC School of Cinematic Arts, Chu received numerous awards for his short musical film When the Kids Are Away, including the Jack Nicholson Directing Award, the National Princess Grace Award, the Anti-defamation League’s Dore Schary Award, and the DGA Student Filmmaker Award.

After leaving college, Chu was immediately spotted by director Steven Spielberg, who hired him to develop the Dreamworks musical Moxie, produced by American Beauty producers Dan Jinks and Bruce Cohen. Since his directorial success of Step Up 2 The Streets, he’s been courted by every major studio to find his next project.
