I've been reading along, but now I must make a comment (in regards to post above): when something is called "Best Picture," it should be for the overall film, not just the story or even for the characters portrayed. This is my own opinion, of
course, but if a film can make you stare at the screen in mute horror at the tragedy unfolding before your very eyes, and if it can make a tear roll down your cheek, then by
God! -
that's your
Best Picture! Right there.
Don't get me wrong - I love both
L.A. Confidential and
Titanic, but c'mon - what James Cameron did was spectacular. It was like watching a newsreel of the 1912 tragedy once the ship struck the iceberg. You were almost
there when the ship started sinking from the bow. The drama beforehand was to allow you a connection to the people who suffered and died on that ship. Sure, it could have been scripted better - the lines from the two stars sounded quite wooden (at times) - but that doesn't diminish the fact that you
felt something watching this for the first time. And the second. The third, fourth, etc. *(unless you're very unfeeling and apathetic).
That's why
Titanic won.
