DeepDiscount 20% off sale Spring 2008

I'm seeing various reports that are indicating the sale will take place from June 6 thru June 22.

There's Jessie the yodeling cowgirl. Bullseye, he's Woody's horse. Pete the old prospector. And, Woody, the man himself. Of course, it's time for Woody's RoundUp. He's the very best! He's the rootinest, tootinest cowboy in the wild, wild west!

Re: DeepDiscount 20% off sale Spring 2008

Too bad though that their Blu-ray prices aren't so hot. Even w/ the 20% off sale, it seems like most of them still wouldn't beat Amazon's prices on most days, no?

Man: I think that's a real YMMV situation.

I've got three Blu-ray discs in my "wishlists" right now. Here's how they break down:

There Will Be Blood: $27.95 (A), $27.85 (DD), $22.28 (DD-20%)

Cloverfield: $19.95 (A), $22.83 (DD), $18.26 (DD-20%)

Company (Esparza): $19.95 (A), $20.24 (DD), $16.19 (DD-20%)

So, the DD sale prices look pretty good--assuming, that is, that the conspiracy theorists aren't right and DD jacks up their prices just before the sale begins!

Re: DeepDiscount 20% off sale Spring 2008

I've never used the sale much for new releases. I think sometimes the prices are a little higher for them during the sale.

But it's usually a great time to pick up box sets you've been waiting on.

Did the last sale apply to hi-def discs? I don't think it did, but I'm not sure.

Yes, but the deals were not always great even with the 20% off. Good deals were to be had on hi-def box sets like Planet Earth.

They'll be right along, John. I suspect many of the old stand-bys will still be functional: SUPERSALE, USATODAY and ESPN. But, we'll see.

Re: DeepDiscount 20% off sale Spring 2008

That's good news - I've got a ton of discs just waiting in my wish list ready to roll.

You know, I have to wonder if this 20% sale undermines their normal business any. I hardly do any business with them save for 2 times a year now. Of course I'm cutting back on DVDs across the board now, so NOBODY is getting my business.

Re: DeepDiscount 20% off sale Spring 2008

It's gotten them a little more business from me; I had been tending to forget about DD because Amazon had much better HD prices and when they were similar, I could kick a coupon someone's way by using referrals. Ordering from the sale did remind me that there are some categories (Asian action movies, for instance), where they legitimately do have the best prices and it's not close.
Jay's Movie Blog - A movie-viewing diary.
Transplanted Life: Sci-fi soap opera about a man placed in a new body, updated two or three times a week.
Trading Post Inn - Another gender-bending soap, with different collaborators writing different points of view.

Re: DeepDiscount 20% off sale Spring 2008

Yeah, I just tried it, and it didn't work yet, nor do any of the other usual suspects.

However, I'm very glad this thread was posted, cause it made me go to DD a couple of days early, where I found out in a more timely manner that one of the sets I was waiting for the sale to purchase for my sister's June 23rd birthday is out of stock. I went to Amazon and found a marketplace set for roughly what I would have gotten it for at the DD sale.

Yeah, same here. I guess they were testing out the codes and I happened to catch it at the right time.

Generally, they enable the codes the afternoon (around 4-5 EST) before the day they say the sale will start.

Re: DeepDiscount 20% off sale Spring 2008

While the 20 off sale still is a good one stop, general purpose sale- there are actually better studio centric sales sprinkled throughout the year. they just finished up a huge Fox/MGM Buy 2 Get 1 free sale where the per average cost was $6.50 for the MGMs and $7 for the Fox titles. During the 20 off sale, these same discs come to $7.72 and $8.38. Before that, a huge Sony sale with discs at $6.63...these are now $9.66 and higher. Even box sets have been on sale here or Amazon ar great discounts recently. I had tried to wait for this sale to really go nuts, but great deals have been coming fast fast and furious for the last few months.

Yeah, some of those B2G1 free sales really rock, especially with the A&E labeled stuff that can be so expensive even at 20% off.

Re: DeepDiscount 20% off sale Spring 2008

The Deep Discount sale is currently working. I used the code USATODAY and got my 20% off.

I bought the following with the sale prices noted:

Patton Blu-Ray $22.28
The Assassination of Jesse James etc. HD DVD $14.75
3:10 to Yuma Blu-ray $18.26
Butch Cassidy Blu-ray $22.28
Full Metal Jacket HD DVD $12.58
Blood Diamond HD DVD $12.58
Curb Your Enthusiasm Season Six $22.39
Syriana HD DVD $13.06

All of the sale prices on the titles I ordered are lower than Amazon's prices.

As usual, pre-orders do not qualify, so I'm going back next week to order The Fugitive, Season 2 Vol. 1.

Re: DeepDiscount 20% off sale Spring 2008

Problem is - this 20% off sale is usualy a scam. They boost the cost of the DVDs just prior to it going live. Like the Godzilla Collection cost $43.89 a while ago - and now that the sale's been announced the set costs $53.66!

Oh sure the 20% off makes it $42.93 so that saves you less than a buck - but that's not exactly the kind of savings that makes it worth your while to go ape and spend the ton of cash you wouldn't normally spend if there wasn't a sale going on.

Infinity's sister site, DVD Planet, has also started their 20% off sale.

Code: 20offsale

Not sure of the end date on their sale.

Calling it a "scam" is a bit strong and more than a bit unfair.

In the case of the Godzilla collection, they had it marked down to almost 50% off MSRP when they were selling it for $43.89. If they took another 20% off that price, they'd be selling it for about $35, and undoubtedly selling it a loss. Do you really expect them to sell it at a loss?

Of the titles I purchased, all were the same price today as they were before the 20% off sale started. The story that they jack up all their prices before the sale is a myth. They do raise the prices on some titles which have been on sale, because they have to do that in order to avoid selling items at below cost or at virtually no profit. For example, last week they were selling the Criterion DVD of SALO for $20, which was 50% off MSRP. Today the price is back to $26, otherwise they would be selling it for $16.

Re: DeepDiscount 20% off sale Spring 2008

I would strongly suggest price comparing with DVD Planet before placing any orders. I ended up shifting quite a few titles over to them as they were a buck or two cheaper...and vice versa.
All the 6/3 Paramount/Legend releases, for example, are cheaper at Planet.

I yearn for the days were I went crazy for the 20 percent off sale... But I can't afford it anymore and will probably not end up getting anything more than a super cheap Blu-Ray or wrestling DVD. ;(

On the order I placed today, prices were comparable (or within ~$1 of each other) on most of the titles between Planet/DD. I went with Planet for those since I get frequent buyer points there. There were four titles, though, that were a couple dollars cheaper at DD ($5 cheaper in one instance), so I ordered those there.

Still have to trim stuff from my wishlist for the remainder of the sale.
Does anyone even click on these "My Collection" links?

Re: DeepDiscount 20% off sale Spring 2008

OK, time to queue all the bi-annual bitching about almost completely fictional DD "Scams" and how they don't ship quite as fast as Amazon, etc, etc.

I have looked MANY times and never found a single title that went up, though I don't doubt there are a handful which do. I have an enormous wish list on DD and the prices rarely change.

The one area they aren't much to get excited about anymore is Criterion. Fortunately, DVD Planet likes to do simultaneous 20% off sales and they have excellent Criterion prices.

EDIT: after posting this, I checked the DD Criterion prices again and they have come down. They are almost the same as DVD Planet.
