Blu-ray.com - Texas Chainsaw Massacre Announced for Blu-ray

I'm going to start saving my pennies for the fall ... looks like there's going to be some terrific stuff for genre fans.

I cannot wait to have TCM on Blu-Ray!

Perfect opportunity for them to fix the audio concerns which sullied an otherwise extraordinary SD release!

Not to be a wet blanket but.........Wasn't this filmed on just 16mm then blown up to 35mm?

If so going from the DVD to a BD, how much more resolution can you squeeze out of this? In other words what is the max lines of resolution that 16mm can provide? I'm curious.

I'll upgrade only if the audio is fixed. Otherwise, I'll stick with the steelbook edition.

If 35mm film is equivalent to 4,000 lines of resolutions then I would assume the rule of halves would put 16mm at slightly under 2,000, still well above Blu-ray's 1,080. Of course, I could be unintentionally speaking out of my ass...

There was a completely new HD master created for the steelbook edition, so this should look about as good as this movie will ever look. Psyched to hear the news.

That's logical but I seem to remember reading somewhere on another site that super 16mm was about 1000 or 1040 lines (can't remember exactly) - close to 1080 but not quite.

Even if that proves to be the case, that's still more than twice the resolution of the SD, so yes, the Blu-ray stands to be a marked improvement over that already-great release...

The video transfer on the 2006 2-Disc Ultimate Edition DVD is outstanding, so I can't even imagine how good it's going to look in HD. This is a must-buy Blu-ray title.

Never before seen bonus features? The 2006 DVD is packed. What more can be included?

Maybe a third commentary track with Teri McMinn, William Vail, and Edwin Neal?

With Chainsaw on the way, I'm hoping Critical Mass will deliver us a Black Christmas (1974) Blu-ray release this December.

The audio of the standard stopped me from buying. Fix the audio for this Blu-Ray or no sale.

You have NO idea! I still have all four films in HD when they broadcast them on the horror channel "MonstersHD?" I can't remember the exact name of it, but I'm pretty sure it was something like that and all four films look absolutely GLORIOUS in HD especially when comparing them to their DVD counterparts. The original Texas looked absolutely MAGNIFICENT in HD, while the 2nd one showed an even greater improvement over the extremely blurry, extremely soft, hideous transfer of the original DVD. Part 3 looked very, very good as well and the remake also showed major improvement over the soft, edge-enhanced DVD.

In fact, I still have the comparisons that I took of Texas Chainsaw (the original) from the DVD to the HD version... I'll post them on here so that people can have a look. You won't believe your eyes!

It was shot on 16mm and blown up to 35mm for theatrical release, but, when I restored the film for Dark Sky, I stayed in the realm of the 16mm negative. I created a new 16mm element from the 16mm A/B roll negative and transferred that... I didn't use anything in 35mm for the HD transfer.

Also, I have been in contact with Dark Sky regarding the title and a representative of Dark Sky has assured me that the audio will be corrected for the BD release. Dark Sky actually DID correct the audio of the SD version, too, and I imagine you can contact them for a disc exchange to get a proper replacement... maybe? I know they sent me a few fixed ones. I bug Dark Sky all the time about this because, had I been in charge of the audio portion of the transfer (which I would've gladly supervised had they let me), that mistake wouldn't have happened in the first place!

What was wrong with the audio? I never bought the disc.

Hopefully they will not DVNR the grain out. 16mm blown up to 35mm has grain. LEAVE IT IN!

I believe that Sally's screams are missing when Franklin is killed and when Kirk is hit with the hammer, one of the hit sound effects is missing.

Not sure if Im buying this again for Blu or not. I have the steelbook and Im happy w it.

However I will buy the 2003 version; that was actually quite good. Hated "The Beginning" though.

Wow, that is totally cool (did I just say 'totally'? ). There should still be grain, of course, but a direct from 16mm xfer is absolutely the way to go. My nephew does HD transfers of 16mm material and has described for me the ins and outs of why it is better to go to the source so I am now very excited about this release.

I didn't know they corrected the audio in SD, but as you said, they should have let you supervise the audio in the first place!


I also hope they leave the grain in.

This is one of my favorite horror films and I look forward to the BD release but I unfortunately just bought the Steelbook from DD right before I bought a PS3 and didn't have time to cancel it. Should I still keep the steelbook or just try to dump it in anticipation for the coming BD release?

I am not a extras whore but am curious if and what may be ported over to the new BD release. Crap.

Three months to go! I suspect everything from the 2006 DVD will be carried over to this BD release, at least I hope so. Can't wait to hear what the new extras are!
