"NIXON : Election Year Edition"

Release date - August 19th

"Anthony Hopkins electrifies the screen as Nixon in the acclaimed hit from
controversial director Oliver Stone. Nominated for four Academy Awards, including
best actor, Anthony Hopkins, 1995, Nixon takes a riveting look at a complex man
whose chance at greatness was ultimately destroyed by his passion for power,
when his involvement in conspiracy jeopardized the nation's security and the
presidency of the United States. With a phenomenal all-star cast featuring Ed
Harris, James Woods and Joan Allen, Nixon is a powerful motion picture. Included
in this special 2-Disc Election Year Edition is an all-new 35-minute documentary on
Nixon by Sean Stone you won't want to miss."

It's worth a double dip for me. Love the film. Anamorphic finally!

Many Shubs and Zuuls knew what it meant to roast in the depths of the Sloar that day I can tell you.

Now I can replace all the non-anamorphics out of my 2003 Stone box set.

As for the cover art, I don't care. It could be Hopkins big old head on the cover with red glowing eyes and I'd still get it. Wait a minute....

Finally. Been waiting for this since I discovered DVD. Who cares about the (baaad) cover art- this is one of Stone's best films- fast, dynamic, complex, intense in both form and content.

Ha ha, I'm doing the same thing. I'll toss the goofy cover... or put the old discs in the case and pawn it. :O

Re: "Nixon : Election Year Edition" - August 19th

To be fair, the new cover artwork IS an improvement on the original. Too bad they don't seem to be including the original theatrical version via seamless branching as the footage restored to the extended cut really doesn't add anything but running time. Happily, I still have my copy of the 1st DVD release which was the theatrical cut and was anamorphic. Unhappily, since I tend to purchase any new Oliver Stone DVD, I'm sure I'll pick this one up too. It's an addiction.

As an aside, "Nixon" makes me really intrigued about Stone's upcoming "W."

That's funny: my copy of the theatrical cut is anamorphic--it's not advertised on the package but it IS anamorphic. My copy of the previously released 2-disc extended version, on the other hand, is a really crappy looking non-anamorphic letterboxed transfer (and yes: I do know the difference).

Re: "Nixon : Election Year Edition" - August 19th

"Doesn't add anything" What are you talking about? I thought the two new
scenes added a great deal to the film. Dick Helms is one of the central figures
during that period and he wasn't in the first cut. That scene between Nixon
and Helms pulls a lot of loose ends together in terms of Cuba and what Nixon
really was concerned about in dealing with leaks. That cabinet meeting scene
is extremely funny and troubling. I love that scene! Not to mention the
extended Oval Office meeting between Dean, Nixon, Ehrlichman, and Haldeman with the whole LBJ issue added to the scene.

I don't have the original DVD anymore, but I don't think it was anamorphic. It
looked terrible, by the way. As does both of the two-disc special editions that
were released afterwards. I hope this version will have a decent transfer. Bob
Richardson's cinematography is fantastic as usual.

Re: "Nixon : Election Year Edition" - August 19th

Wasn't the problem the added footage looking crap and with a different aspect ratio then the rest of the film? Been ages since I watched it.

Yes, the added footage was taken from VHS masters (or maybe a laserdisc)
and it looked horrible. I'm not sure what they'll be able to do about it for this
release.

All the extra scenes are great on their own and I enjoy watching them as deleted scenes but, when inserted back into the movie proper, I felt they broke the narrative flow and the Helms scene in particular (though, again, it's great as a stand-alone scene) brings the movie to a screeching halt. When it's over Richard Helms is never seen and is rarely mentioned again--nothing of consequence (from a storytelling perspective, anyway) occurs as a result of that scene. Perhaps it's just that the way the scene was inserted into the extended cut that didn't feel organic or perhaps it's just that it was nine minutes of some of the crappiest looking video I've ever seen in a major studio release.

I still have the original DVD and trust me: it's anamorphic. I agree that it's not a great looking disc but it's still far more watchable than the old 2-disc version.

There's an audio interview with Oliver Stone at www.dvdverdict.com where he talks about this issue. He says they've been able to clean it up in a way they weren't able to back when they did the first release. Perhaps Disney ponied up some money to do a proper clean-up and transfer? Here's hoping...

The interview is mostly centered around the hi-def release of Alexander Revisited and it's about an hour long but it's a good listen.

Re: "Nixon : Election Year Edition" - August 19th

Shoot! It doesn't play for me. What did he say?

They must've gone back to some sort of original elements to get a better
source for those added scenes.

What do they do with all the used film from a movie these days? Burn it
or recycle? I wonder who has the original negative of "Nixon"?

Re: "Nixon : Election Year Edition" - August 19th

From the Digital Bits:

"In the news today, we've got word on the extras that will be included on
Buena Vista's Nixon: Election Year Edition (due 8/19). It's obviously director
Oliver Stone's longer version of the film, featuring 28 minutes of additional
footage. Both the 2-disc DVD (SRP $29.99) and 2-disc Blu-ray (SRP $34.99)
versions will feature two separate audio commentaries with Stone, the
all-new Beyond Nixon 35-minute documentary, deleted scenes introduced by
Stone, the original theatrical trailer and video of Stone being interviewed on
The Charlie Rose Show. Both versions will feature Dolby Digital 5.1 audio,
while the Blu-ray will add Uncompressed PCM 5.1 (48/24) as well."

No, it's the original, movie-only Region 1 release that Disney put out back in the early days of the format, prior to the subsequent 2-Disc Collector's Abomination. The packaging doesn't advertise it as "16x9 enhanced" or "anamorphic" (I believe it just says "Letterboxed") and even the disc menu is 4:3 so I was definitely and pleasantly surprised as all hell when the movie played and I didn't have to utilize my projector's zoom-in function.
